The unit broadly surveys some of the major cultural, social and economic developments which have shaped the interactions between Australia and selected Asian nations over time. A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted.
EDSS322 Studies of Society and Environment

This unit is concerned with examining the patterns of interaction amongst humanity in various socio-cultural, political and environmental settings throughout time. This unit focuses on the student as educator, preparing society’s future adults to be critical thinkers functioning effectively within a rapidly changing society.
This unit is concerned with learning and teaching and curriculum, hence it will provide students with a rationale for examining the nature, purpose and processes of social education. Furthermore, the unit introduces students to methods for designing, implementing and evaluating units.
EDSS410 Basic Career Counselling Skills

In order to assist students’ transition from school to further education, careers counselling has a critical role to play. Through careers counselling students can be assisted to develop the necessary enterprise skills and be encouraged to gather, consider and evaluate information about themselves and the world of work in order to make and implement decisions relating to their future. This unit aims to introduce the nature of enterprise and some of the theories of career counselling, and to develop some basic counselling processes.
EDSS411 Career and Work Education and the Community

In this unit some of the relationships between work and career education and the community will be investigated. Focus will be on the provision of services and information by the community, together with community perceptions, attitudes, concerns and actions. ‘Community’ will be interpreted widely, to range from federal and state governments to local newspapers. Agencies which assist in career choice, preparation and training and in meeting problems which arise from unemployment will be investigated. Much of the work done in this unit will be of an experiential nature and will reflect the locations where the students may be employed.
EDSS412 Career and Work Education: Curriculum and Strategies

Approaches to and methods of teaching appropriate to work and career education will be examined in this unit. Study will involve ideas on developing self-awareness, career decision making and educational and training options. Preparation for employment and the possibility of periods of unemployment will be considered, as will the importance of career flexibility and lifelong learning to meet the challenge of workplace change.
EDSS413 Society, Politics, Economics, Technology and Work

Commencing with an overview of the concept of work and nature and place of employment throughout history, the focus of the unit will shift to a study of employment in the twenty-first century. Factors impacting on the changing nature, demands and availability of employment in Australia at present and in the near future will be considered, together with the importance of voluntary work and recreational activities to both the individual and society.
EDSS416 Commerce and Business Studies Curriculum and Teaching 1

This unit is designed to develop students’ competence and ability in the planning of teaching and learning experiences in commerce and business for middle school students within the context of relevant state curriculum documents. The unit also introduces students to senior school Business Studies. Business Studies encompasses subjects such as Business Management, Accounting, Economics, Industry and Enterprise, and Legal Studies. This unit is designed to develop students’ awareness of the literacy demands in commerce subjects; namely reading, writing, speaking, and the interpretation of a range of material both written and in a graphic format.

This unit is designed to extend a knowledge base for commerce and business studies education that will develop competence and ability in the planning of experiences for senior secondary school students within the context of the relevant state curriculum documents. Emphasis is placed on commerce and business education as an interdisciplinary way of knowing as well as a discipline-based domain. It is also designed to develop in students a critical awareness of a range of approaches, resources and procedures applicable to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation in Commerce 7-10 and Business Studies.

The unit will examine the critical literacy skills required in Commerce VET subjects in order to meet the key vocational competencies set out in the Commerce VET units. In addition, students undertaking this method will further develop a critical awareness of the relationship between strong literacy skills and the development of critical skills required in Commerce subjects (state curriculum documents). The mastery of these essential skills, such as; analysis of material, case studies etc, interpretation of material, synthesis, essay writing, argumentative responses, critical evaluation, is pivotal to the achievement of a satisfactory-high standard in Commerce and Business Studies subjects.

This unit addresses the major issues affecting the shape and character of commerce and business education, such as the relationship between school and work, transition to work and /or higher education, lifelong learning, questions of gender and equity, multicultural policy and the recognition of the values, beliefs and traditions of particular groups. Students will explore the way in which the learning needs of a wide range of students in secondary school can be met through innovative curriculum design that engages students in experiential community- based programs. Particular attention is focused on program designs such as the Student Action Teams: Learning in the Community.

This unit is designed to enable students to begin to understand teaching/learning methodologies of Secondary History. With particular reference to the teaching of history in junior secondary classes, students will consider appropriate classroom strategies which enable students to evaluate sources and make judgments based on them. Students will also develop strategies to enable their pupils to effectively communicate logical arguments concerning historical issues and to research and investigate historical problems. The teaching of history as an inquiry into past human experiences which can contribute to an understanding of the present is a recurrent theme in this unit.

It is designed to enable students to begin to understand teaching /learning methodologies of secondary history. With particular reference to the teaching of history in upper secondary classes, students will consider further appropriate classroom strategies which enable students to evaluate sources and make judgments based on them. Students will also continue to develop strategies to enable their pupils to effectively communicate logical arguments concerning historical issues and to research and investigate historical problems.
EDSS422 Humanities Curriculum and Teaching 1

This unit is designed for student teachers to develop an understanding of the way in which Humanities are taught and studied in Years 7 to 10 in secondary schools. Student teachers will be introduced to methods for designing and implementing lessons and units of work and to methods of assessing and evaluating students’ learning. Learning and teaching strategies, including inquiry approaches to learning and the use of technology, which are appropriate for students with different abilities and which will develop their knowledge, skills, behaviours and values are an integral part of the unit.
EDSS423 Humanities Curriculum and Teaching 2

This unit is designed for student teachers to develop an understanding of the way in which the Studies of Classical Societies, Contemporary Australian Society, History (Australian History, Renaissance Italy, and Revolutions), International Studies and Political Studies, are taught and studied in Years 11 and 12. The relevant state curriculum documents which describe the different studies are introduced to the student teachers. Methods for developing courses “…that include appropriate learning activities, [with special reference given to information technology and new learning technologies], to enable students to develop the knowledge and skills identified in the outcome statements in each unit “are explored. Attention is given to assessment and reporting. The different assessment priorities for units 1 and 2 and units 3 and 4 are examined and practice is undertaken in the selection of appropriate assessment tasks and relevant correction processes.
EDSS428 Connecting Society and Environment

This unit is concerned with examining the patterns of interaction amongst humanity in various socio-cultural, political and environmental settings throughout time. It focuses on pre-service teachers as educators who will prepare society’s future adults to be critical thinkers functioning effectively within a rapidly changing society. Pre-service teachers should be able to make connections between the various elements of society such as environments, time, change and continuity, culture, identity and systems, resources and power. Emphasis is placed on particular strategies and techniques such as inquiry learning and the use of ICT both in the effective teaching of SOSE/HSIE/HUMANITIES and in daily living.
The pre-service teachers will be provided with a rationale for examining the nature, purpose and processes of social and environmental education. They will be introduced to methods for designing, implementing and evaluating units of work in accordance with the various state and territory documents. These units will include learning and teaching strategies appropriate for children with different abilities and will develop children’s knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours related to the world in which they live.
