EBAC129 Integration of Cultures and Learning

An analysis of both the students’ and teachers’ own culture is central to this unit. Issues of ethnocentricity, socialisation, personality and cultural upbringing will be addressed. Students will learn to apply their developing skills in ethnography to widening and deepening their awareness of the learning needs in their own future students. They will be encouraged to enculturate materials and approaches within their own social setting.
EBAC131 Community Education with Adults

Students will critically reflect on the role of community leaders, with specific emphasis on influences on educational theory and practice caused by the merging of traditional and modern contexts. Characteristics of the adult learner in the learning paradigm will be considered. Experiential models including facilitation, animation and action research will be applied in the planning, delivery and evaluation of community education programs.
EBAC132 Community Education with Children and Youth

Students will develop skills and criteria for critiquing, designing, presenting and evaluating lessons, sessions and events for leaders working with children and youth. This incorporates observation and critical analysis in demonstrated lessons, the presentation of sessions and events for youth and children. Cultural, developmental and environmental factors will be considered.
EBAC200 Citizenship and Ethics

The purpose of this unit is to offer students the opportunity to develop skills that will assist in the building of the newly independent East Timor. It aims to provide insights into the duties and responsibilities of citizens in the development of society. The unit will examine the ways that education will help to develop the expressed goals of citizenship for East Timor.
EBAR300 Creative Arts Education: Visual Arts

This unit will provide students with a basic understanding of the role of the visual arts in both an educative and societal context. It will introduce students to the various theoretical models and strategies that underpin the role and function of the visual arts in teaching and learning. The unit also aims to increase students’ knowledge, skills and appreciation of the role of the artist as maker, presenter and critic. The unit will provide students with practical experiences and opportunities for personal expression and will enable students to establish links between theoretical components and classroom practices.
EBDR100 Dance and Drama

This unit will develop students’ appreciation and understanding of the role of dance and drama in children’s education. The unit will enable students to increase their awareness of the body as an effective means of communication and to develop knowledge, skills and strategies related to teaching and learning in dance and drama.
EBFD100 Study Skills

This unit will help students to develop skills and attitudes which will enable them to achieve study at a tertiary level. It will assist students in completing assessment tasks, using reference material and planning study and revision programs as they progress in their studies. The assessment tasks will include analysis of their own learning and study style.
EBFD101 Educational Psychology

This unit helps students to capitalise upon and interpret their observations in three ways: first, through a reconsideration of established theories; second, through acquainting themselves with the means of accessing and assessing more recent and current research; third, through the application of both kinds of research to the classes which they are teaching.
EBFD102 Learning

This unit aims to provide students with an introduction to educational psychology, which places particular emphasis on relevant aspects of the learner, the teacher, and their inter-relationships. The unit will emphasise the application of theories of learning in classroom settings. This unit is not intended to be prescriptive. It is intended to encourage and support students in the development of soundly based, critical, and reflective thinking. These will contribute to an outlook, which brings consistency to educational decisions and underpins a continuous process of validating one’s professional knowledge.
EBFD103 Social Analysis and Community Outreach

This unit aims to develop students who are critical thinkers and who will use skills in social analysis to act for social justice in a variety of contexts. An experiential learning component will provide students with first hand experiences that will increase their awareness of issues of structural injustice in the world at both a local and global level. The content is grounded in the principles of human rights and social justice and these concepts provide a foundation for analysis of contemporary society. Students will develop an understanding of the causes of injustice and exclusion and their skills for effective social action will be increased. Students will be encouraged to reflect upon their own values and personal lives. This unit provides students with relevant social context in which to come to a personalised understanding of human rights and justice while relating this to learning within teacher education.
EBFD104 Human Development

This unit introduces students to a holistic approach to developmental psychology.
The aim of this unit is to assist students to develop an understanding of the physical, cognitive and psychosocial aspects of child and adolescent development with particular relevance to the school years. Students will examine the developing person’s perspective of the world about them with specific reference to family, school, peers, culture and diverse social contexts. Significant models of development will be introduced and illuminated by relevant classic and current theory and research. Lectures and tutorials will actively engage the student in a range of learning activities that encourage the development of a critical reflective approach to learning.
EBFD200 Psychology: Learning and the Child

This unit will introduce students to the study of learning, addressing relevant aspects of the learner, the teacher and their inter-relationships. It will link theoretical perspectives on learning with educational practice.
It is intended to encourage and support students in the development of critical and reflective thinking which will help them to make sound educational decisions using professional knowledge.
The unit recognises that the teacher/learner relationship is at the centre of educational processes and that an understanding of factors influencing learning of individuals is critical for prospective educators. The unit seeks to encourage students not only to reflect on their own and others’ learning but also to develop the capacity to learn about learning from practice.
EBFD201 Education and Society

This unit is designed to help students understand contemporary educational policy and practice by applying major sociological perspectives to the social and cultural factors impacting on schools in an East Timorese context. Students will have the opportunity to relate sociological theory to decision-making concerning social and educational change that they may experience and initiate both as teachers and as citizens.
EBFD300 Educational Philosophy

This unit will introduce students to the practice of philosophical thinking about education. Current issues in education and in East Timorese education in particular, will be examined from a philosophical perspective. It aims to demonstrate the importance of philosophical thought in relation to problems encountered in teaching and learning.
EBFD301 District Research Project

This unit will allow students to design and deliver a program that will assist in some aspect of the rebuilding of East Timor. Students will be able to choose a project that will assist the community using the skills and strategies learnt through the course of their studies.
EBFX100 Field Experience 1

This unit will introduce beginning teacher by emphasising professional interaction, familiarisation and guided observation. The unit offers opportunities to develop an awareness of the needs of learners and to promote an image of the student as teacher. Through observation and discussion the student is able to understand and develop elementary teaching and management skills and to undertake some introductory activities.
EBFX200 Field Experience 2

This unit will develop and extend basic teaching and learning skills. The unit will assist students to identify learning styles and apply strategies to cater for various learning styles and contexts. The unit offers opportunities to develop teaching and management skills; to plan, prepare and implement lessons geared to curriculum area studies; to develop a variety of interpersonal skills; to identify appropriate assessment techniques and to reflect critically on experiences.
EBFX300 Field Experience 3

This unit will refine and enhance teaching and learning approaches directed at meeting individual learning needs. The unit will offer opportunities for students to apply and consolidate curriculum planning, assessment techniques, management, discipline skills and curriculum knowledge through lesson and unit preparation and implementation. This unit will promote a variety of interpersonal skills enabling students to reflect critically on experience.
