This unit aims to develop and expand the students’ knowledge, understanding and practice of clinical decision-making in nursing. Theoretical and practical aspects of clinical decision-making are considered in the context of nursing and interdisciplinary health care professional practice. Approaches to advanced clinical nursing assessment of physical and mental health status, and factors influencing the accuracy of assessment data and possible implications for nursing practice, will be considered.

This unit will provide students with opportunities to explore and critique current trends in various areas of specialty nursing practice. Key issues will be identified through literature search and information derived from professional experience in the field. Aspects of the concurrent health care context as background will enable critical analysis of the roles, relationships and interactions of health service personnel, consumers of services, and formulation of profiles for provision of care through specialty services for individuals and groups.

This unit will explore and debate issues relating to the development, use, and evaluation of technology and its relevance to the delivery of health care services. The human dimensions of technological innovation and the implications for people and society are critically examined. Ethical, moral, and legal aspects of technological research and development are considered in the contexts of dynamic and increasingly complex health care services.

This unit will provide opportunities to examine current approaches to the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies in leadership practices. Participants will have the opportunity to explore aspects of self and relationships in the contexts of their practice. Analysis and debate of issues of importance to the development of leadership skills and leadership behaviours in nursing will be undertaken. Various innovative strategies and skills for effective and authentic leadership will be developed and evaluated.

This unit critically examines contemporary models and theories in nursing and their relevance to nursing practice in varied contexts of health care services. Participants will be encouraged to explore conceptual frameworks, underlying assumptions and implications for nursing practice with special reference to participants’ own generalist or specialty focus and context of practice.

This unit enables students to explore, clarify, and examine the nature of cultural phenomena, in regard to of caring, caring with cultures, the similarities and differences, and the significance of culture in nursing and health care practice. Factors influencing how people from diverse cultural backgrounds experience and respond to health and illness will be considered against a background of transcultural nursing theory and research. Approaches to, and imperatives for, caring in nursing practice in culturally diverse contexts will be examined with reference to ethical and moral concerns.

This unit examines nursing as an international practice and developing discipline in the global contexts of diverse human needs, provision of various health care services, and different economic, social, political, and geographic contexts. The importance of appraising nursing practice in different community, regional, and national contexts will be considered. Current and emerging issues in nursing across national and cultural boundaries will be critically examined. Differences associated with local, regional, and national contexts of nursing education and practice will be highlighted.

This unit provides participants with the opportunity to investigate and explore a self-identified area of study, usually emanating from an issue explored in a course-work unit. The study is undertaken with a staff mentor appointed by the relevant Head of School. Participants should have successfully completed six units including core units before they undertake a unit of independent study.

This unit will examine the relevance and application of contemporary models, theories and practices of leadership in nursing and health care from social, political, and economic viewpoints. The concepts of change and pro-active leadership strategies and skills, including ethical, moral and social justice dimensions, will be considered in relation to the dynamic nature of health care services and diversifying public need for appropriate and acceptable services. Ways to shape, support and, where indicated, change health care structures and services where indicated will be critically examined.

This unit provides an opportunity to explore, develop, extend, and evaluate current approaches to policy development and planning in health care service delivery, with particular reference to nursing services. Managerial, operational, and strategic levels for policy and planning are critically examined. The student will be encouraged to critique current approaches and to develop alternative approaches and strategies for health service organisations and nursing practice of relevance to the participants’ practice environments.

This unit aims to develop students’ ability to use qualitative research methods in the context of health related research. Research questions, research design, and research methods for qualitative data collection and analysis will be examined. The use of a variety of structured and unstructured approaches will be explored and issues of rigour and credibility will be addressed. Research proposal and report writing will be included.

This unit aims to develop students’ ability to use quantitative research methods in the context of health related research. Research questions, research design and research methods for quantitative data collection and analysis will be examined. Approaches to descriptive and inferential statistical methods will be discussed, as well as issues of validity and reliability. Research proposal and report writing will be included.

Current models and theories of teaching and learning will be critically appraised for their relevance to teaching and learning in the provision of nursing care. The roles and functions of the nurse as teacher and learner will be examined in relation to the varying needs of diverse learners and contexts of practice.

This unit will provide an opportunity to explore issues and theories in relation to the management of resources, especially in health care service organisations. Physical, human and financial resource management principles and practices will be critically examined. Participants will be encouraged to develop strategies and skills to maximise the allocation and use of resources, and enhance ethical, moral and legal accountability. Measures and indicators of effective resource management will be critically appraised for relevance to health service organisations and delivery of quality care.
