NRSG400 Research Methods (Honours) 10 cp
Prerequisites Entry into the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours)
Teaching Organisation 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit aims to develop the students’ ability to appraise critically the research process and to plan and proceed towards development of a scholarly thesis on a specific health care topic. Research design, data collection and data analysis will be examined using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Skills will be developed to enable the student to present research proposals and reports effectively.
NRSG401 Traditions and Challenges in Nursing 10 cp
Prerequisites Entry into the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours)
Teaching Organisation 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit is designed to enable students to focus on the historical and philosophical roots of their profession, and use this as a base from which to explore and expand their understanding of contemporary health care issues. This unit seeks to provide the student with the knowledge to act effectively as a lifelong learner, critical thinker and change agent in the current health care environment.
NRSG406 Honours Thesis (Part B Full-time) 40 cp
Prerequisites Entry into the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours)
Teaching Organisation: Student centred learning and research under the supervision of nominated staff.
Students will prepare to undertake a thesis through the exploration of literature and the presentation of preliminary research processes and findings. Following the presentation of a research proposal, students will complete a thesis related to their specific area of interest in nursing. The thesis will be prepared through independent scholarly work under the guidance an approved supervisor.

Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 48 contact hours 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit provides the opportunity for students to explore the philosophical and theoretical foundations of contemporary midwifery practice. A with woman approach where pregnancy, birth and parenting are considered a normal experience and practice is based on a wellness and social model of health, underpins this unit. National and global context of women’s health and childbearing will be considered.
NRSG501 Collaborative Partnerships 10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 48 contact hours 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore the professional relationships within the maternity and neonatal environments. Unexpected events requiring obstetric and neonatal interventions will be examined. The impact of such events upon women, babies and families will be viewed in the context of midwifery practice.
NRSG502 Childbearing Partnerships 10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 36 contact hours 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit provides the opportunity for students to develop knowledge and attitudes in the provision of woman-centred midwifery care across the childbearing period. The unit focuses on the expected alterations and adaptations and their impact on the woman, baby and family: forming a clinical basis for midwifery care.

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 36 contact hours 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit provides the opportunity for students to integrate theoretical concepts in relation to the care of well women and babies. Emphasis is placed on health assessment, monitoring and care across the childbearing continuum.

This unit provides the opportunity for students to integrate theoretical concepts in relation to the care of women and babies experiencing health variations. In addition the unit provides the opportunity to develop skills in educational processes for the childbearing woman and her family.

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 20 contact hours 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit provides the opportunity for students to integrate knowledge and understanding from theoretical and clinical units to provide care for the woman and her family across the continuum of the maternity experience. This unit enables students to further consolidate theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise, through undertaking a clinical learning contract as a means to address identified learning needs and interests.
NRSG508 Advancing Midwifery Practice 10 cp

Teaching Organisation Fully online. Equivalent of 30 hours contact 120 hours of focused learning per semester.
This unit provides opportunity for the student to critically evaluate and reflect upon contemporary midwifery practice and related evidence. This unit also provides the opportunity to advance their midwifery knowledge, skills and attitudes and to work with women in keeping birth normal.

Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Structured learning activities for 24 hours per semester.
This unit provides the foundation of scientific knowledge that underpins selected areas of specialty practice. Specific knowledge in the areas of bioscience, pharmacology and lifespan development, relevant to the student’s selected specialty area, will be identified and explored in relation to its application to clinical practice and in the context of typical clinical scenarios.

This unit integrates with and supports the unit Nursing Practice 2. In this unit students will explore dimensions of specialty practice including social, political, cultural and demographic contexts for their practice, as well as their professional role and the legal and ethical aspects of clinical decision-making in their specialty.

Teaching Organisation Structured learning activities for 24 hours per semester.
This unit integrates with the unit Foundations of Specialty Practice, as students develop and apply knowledge and skills for safe patient/client-centred care relevant to their area of specialty practice. Clinical experience is an integral aspect of student learning as theory and practice are integrated and assessed in relation to clinical competencies. The unit focuses on enabling students to perform a comprehensive health assessment and prioritise and implement appropriate nursing care.
NRSG514 Nursing Practice 2 10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Structured learning activities for 24 hours per semester.
This unit builds on and extends the knowledge and understanding acquired in Foundations of Specialty Practice and Nursing Practice 1. The aim is to prepare students to provide holistic care at the beginning level of specialty practice. The focus of the unit is on developing a collaborative team approach with increasingly complex therapeutics. The students’ ability to articulate the bases of their clinical decision-making will be facilitated.
