This unit is designed to prepare students for role transition from the student world to the 'real-life' work of the professional nurse. Students will have the opportunity to explore career pathways in nursing and strategies to enhance their personal and professional development. In addition, the unit will address the nature of organisations within a rapidly changing health care system.

This unit contributes to the integration of theoretical and clinical concepts and their application in a health care environment. Clinical practice will be undertaken in settings where students are able to apply theoretical and practical knowledge relevant to the functional health patterns studied in Nursing 5.

The unit builds upon the foundation established in Semester 1, 2, 3 and 4. The focus of this unit is the comprehensive assessment using the functional health patterns as a framework and nursing of individual and groups across the life span who are requiring complex, long term or palliative care. Emphasis is placed on the integration of selected theories and principles of nursing practice and related concepts of pathophysiology. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the influence of environment on functional roles of practitioners.

The focus of this unit is nursing. It provides students with the opportunity to synthesise theory and experience of previous and concurrent units, to reflect thoughtfully on their practice and to create new learning situations from which they may develop further, both personally and professionally. In this unit there will be an opportunity to explore in-depth a nursing specialty selected by the learner. The elective nursing specialties may include: emergency/high dependency, paediatric, maternity, palliative care, perioperative, psychiatric nursing, mental health, aged care and community.

This unit introduces students to the obstacles that women may experience during childbearing. Students will be assisted to develop their existing knowledge and skills by working with women and other members of the healthcare team when obstacles arise during pregnancy, labour and birth, and the first weeks after birth. Emphasis is given to the collaborative role of the midwife, referral, use of medical technology and intervention, and the implications for women, their babies, and the midwives. The unit consists of 4 learning units facilitating students to be self- directed in their progress through the subject material and between learning units, and complements the practice subject Navigating Childbearing Obstacles.

This unit will build on the women’s health assessment and health promotion skills previously developed within the role of the midwife working with childbearing woman. This unit, through the introduction of the broader women’s health context, explores the primary and collaborative role of the midwife working with women experiencing common women’s health problems and their responses to these experiences. Students will be introduced to the physical and psychological aspects associated with selected women’s health problems. The issue of women’s experience, “what is happening to me” and “woman’s sense of self”, will be explored. The focus will be on fostering a positive self image in women through facilitating participation in informed decision making and taking responsibility for self care and optimising wellness. This theoretical unit informs the women’s health practice subject.

NRSG334 Women's Health Practice 10 cp

Teaching Organisation 20 hours of contact practical laboratory 160 hrs of midwifery practice per semester.
This practice subject will focus on student’s developing their knowledge and skills relating to midwives working in partnership with women experiencing breast and other women’s reproductive health concerns. Students will be assisted to work in partnership with woman experiencing diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures within the context of reproductive health, including cancer and urinary conditions, whilst undertaking responsibility for women centred care in a variety of healthcare settings. Student’s learning will focus on the role of the midwife as a provider of primary and collaborative care for women across the reproductive health lifespan with an emphasis on skill development in women’s health assessment, promoting wellness, discharge planning, woman-centred care planning, delivery and evaluation.

This unit will assist students, within the context of the family to apply in the nursery foundational knowledge of the care of babies with special needs. The student will gain beginning skills necessary for a midwife to be a competent member of the multidisciplinary team, opportunities to practice in the skills laboratory prior to experience in the health care environment will be provided. Supervised practice in the level two Nursery will facilitate the development of competency, and reflection and utilisation of evidence to meet the varied needs of babies with special needs and the family will be emphasised. Experience in this environment will allow the student to appreciate the complexity of the family experience.

This unit will focus on nursing and healthcare ethics. Formation of skills in ethical reflection and sensitivity to make decisions are necessary in the nurses' daily practice. The unit will provide the opportunity for students to apply ethical concepts to dilemmas encountered in nursing. This unit seeks to contribute to this formation with an education in contemporary issues and approaches in the ethics of healthcare.

This unit will assist students, within the context of the family to apply in the nursery foundational knowledge of the care of babies with special needs. The student will gain beginning skills necessary for a midwife to be a competent member of the multidisciplinary team, opportunities to practice in the skills laboratory prior to experience in the health care environment will be provided. Supervised practice in the level two Nursery will facilitate the development of competency, and reflection and utilisation of evidence to meet the varied needs of babies with special needs and the family will be emphasised. Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 36 hours of classroom contact per semester. Includes practical work.
Emphasises the contribution of communication and counselling skills to the development of the caring relationship between nurses and clients. Students will be able to explore various conceptual frameworks designed to enhance an understanding of communication and counselling principles. Application of these principles is necessary to enable nurses to provide appropriate holistic care for individuals, families and communities.

This unit will focus on human lactation, breastfeeding and infant nutrition. It will provide opportunity for the student to critically analyse socio-cultural dimensions related to these topics and consolidate knowledge and skills to support women in making infant feeding choices. In addition, this unit provides opportunity for the student to apply principles of lactation, breastfeeding and infant nutrition to practice. The unit will facilitate the student’s application of relevant codes to midwifery practice.
NRSG342 Preparing for Midwifery Practice 10 cp

Teaching Organisation Equivalent 60 hours of contact 160 hours of midwifery practice per semester.
This unit will prepare the student for the graduate midwifery role. It allows an intensive period of consolidation of midwifery knowledge and skills within midwifery practice settings through a preceptorship model of teaching and learning. During this experience, students will work with a Midwife.

This final foundation unit explores four themes which inform the holistic perspective for practice. A personal philosophy for practice that encompasses lifelong learning and an image of the ‘self’ as a professional will prepare the student for beginning practice and into the future. A culmination of the experiences from the foundation units will enable students to adopt, influence and characterise a positive vision of health for the future.

This unit allows the student to explore nursing care from a specialty perspective.

Emphasis is placed on the integration of principles of nursing and related concepts of pathophysiology and pharmacology. Students actively engage in critical reflection on their ability to maintain holistic perspectives and cultural awareness during the delivery of nursing care to the person family and community across the life span in a variety of practice settings.

Emphasis is placed on the integration of selected theories and principles of nursing and related concepts of pathophysiology and pharmacology. Students actively engage in critical reflection on their ability to maintain holistic perspectives and cultural awareness during the delivery of nursing care to the person, family and community across the life span. This unit provides the opportunity for students to make the transition from student to graduate nurse and will be achieved through a preceptorship model of clinical supervision.
