NRSG226 Health and Healing Practices in Indigenous Communities:                                   10 cp

Nurses Learning from Fieldwork

Prerequisites Nil (Elective)

The focus of this unit is on enhancing an understanding of primary health care practices of indigenous people, and identifying and managing the major health problems of a developing country. Students participating in this unit will undertake a field trip to the Solomon Islands. Before the trip an intensive workshop will be attended by the students where the principles of primary health care will be explored, including emphasis on health promotion methods, health aid projects, health attitudes and values of indigenous communities, and health and healing practices of indigenous people.

NRSG227 Information Management in Community Settings                                                  10 cp

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 36 hours of classroom contact per semester.

 

The aim of this unit is to explore how, and what, information is collected by community health nurses. The emphasis is on nurses’ documentation of what they do. Students will be asked to describe the use of various systems employed to collect and assess client information, for example, paper-based, computer-based and mobile-based systems. The implications of NSW Health’s Community Health Information Development Project will be discussed as it relates to standardisation of nursing procedures and nursing data. It is intended that this unit includes a field trip and visit with the Sydney Home Nursing Service.

NRSG228 Health Promotion in Childbearing Families                                                           10 cp

Health care services are facing challenges to be efficient, cost effective and equitable. In addition, consumer groups, particularly those using obstetric services, are recognising the limitations of these services and are calling for alternatives to a system that exhibits a preoccupation with technological intervention. This unit provides an alternative approach to caring for families. It enables practitioners to conceptualise the family and the health of the family within the broad context of the environment in which they live. This unit provides students with opportunities to explore their role as change agents in primary health care of families.

NRSG229 Complementary Nursing Therapy                                                                          10 cp

This unit explores the history, philosophy, theory and practices of complementary therapy modalities, analyses the significance of natural therapy in modern health care and examines the relationship between nursing and natural therapy from historical, theoretical and practical perspectives. The unit will provide the opportunity for students to develop beginning skills for the utilisation of complementary therapy – theory and practice – in nursing practice.

NRSG230 Transcultural Nursing in a Multicultural Society                                                    10 cp

The major objective of this unit is to critically examine and discuss the notion and need for transcultural nursing. The discussion and activities include the following topic areas: an introduction to the transcultural (cross-cultural nursing), transcultural perspectives on health / illness beliefs and practices, transcultural concepts of care, maximising transcultural therapeutic nurse-people relationships, and the development of a transcultural nursing health care system.

NRSG231 Women’s Health Issues                                                                                          10 cp

This unit will provide opportunity and encouragement for the exploration of issues relevant to women and their health. The discussion will be informed by reference to gender issues, feminist thought and consideration of women’s ways of knowing. Female cognitivism as it relates to illness and traditional health care and aspects of women'’ health through the life cycle will be explored. Processes used in the delivery of nursing care in relation to promoting, maintaining and restoring women'’ health will also be studied.

There are influences on individual, community and population health that act at a global level.  These influences are often not easily recognised, analysed nor modified.  This unit aims to raise the individual's awareness of global influences of health, assist the individual to recognise the causative factors behind these influences and to determine strategies for sustainable development.


 

NRSG234 Traditional Chinese Medicine                                                                                10 cp

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 36 hours of classroom contact per semester.

 

This unit will focus on the principles of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the roles of nurses in TCM. The unit will provide the opportunity for students to understand the Chinese health care culture and apply the concept of Chinese Medicine in nursing. Students will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills to provide a therapeutic environment for the client to be restored to harmony.

Emphasis is placed on the integration of theories and principles of nursing practice in related concepts of TCM. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the influence of TCM on functional roles of practitioners

 

NRSG235 Introduction to Orthopaedic Nursing                                                                      10 cp

Prerequisites Nil (Elective)

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 36 hours of classroom contact and practical work per semester.

 

This unit will introduce students to strategies to promote healthy musculoskeletal functioning in individuals and groups. It provides the opportunity for students to examine the orthopaedic specialty nursing knowledge and skills that underpin nursing care of clients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system within the context of acute care. Students will explore the impact of congenital, developmental and acquired disorders of the musculoskeletal system on people of all ages. The unit will also focus on the preventative management of common musculoskeletal health problems.

 

NRSG236 Community Participation                                                                                       10 cp

Prerequisites Nil (Elective)

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 36 hours per semester of involving contract with lecturer and volunteering in community agency.

 

This unit provides an opportunity for the student to develop an appreciation of the positive reciprocal relationships that health professionals can develop through engaging with members of a local, national or international community. Through a volunteer role at a selected agency, the student will be able to learn about the role of community agencies and assist them in supporting individuals and families experiencing long term health and social justice issues. For the student, this unit provides a vehicle to experience and develop the values of partnership, trust, equality, mutual respect and commitment that are inherent in ethical community engagement.

 

NRSG237 Contexts of Nursing 3                                                                                             10 cp

Prerequisites NRSG123 Contexts of Nursing 2 or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 24 hours of lectures, 12 hours of tutorials, and 24 hours Nursing Laboratory per semester.

 

This unit develops students’ knowledge of the physical, mental and social factors that contribute to personal, family or community mental health. It also focuses on the role of the nurse who cares for persons who have alterations to their cognitive-perceptual or self perception-self concept patterns of health across the lifespan. In particular, it enables the student to maintain a holistic focus when caring for those who require pain assessment and management. In doing so, it highlights for the student the therapeutic use of self, and ethical and legal boundaries that influence nursing’s scope of practice.

This unit develops the student’s clinical expertise and knowledge of the physical, mental and social factors that contribute to person, family or community mental health. It focuses on the role of the nurse who cares for persons who have alterations to their cognitive-perceptual or self perception-self concept patterns of health across the life span. In particular this unit enables the student to maintain a holistic focus when caring for those who require pain assessment and management. In doing so it highlights for the student the therapeutic use of self, and ethical and legal boundaries that influence nursing’s scope of practice.

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 4 hours of lectures and 136 hours of off campus Clinical Practice per semester.

 

This unit extends the student’s clinical learning from semesters 2 and 3. It focuses on the impact of lifestyle factors on health and illness. Utilisation of clinical decision-making skills will enable students to develop nursing care for those who experience alterations in the associated functional health patterns. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect critically on the influence that health promotion has on the person, family and community in a variety of contexts. The nurses’ roles and responsibilities for assisting others to achieve their optimal health status in a variety of contexts will be examined from an holistic perspective.

NRSG240 Contexts of Nursing 4                                                                                             10 cp

Prerequisites NRSG237 Contexts of Nursing 3 or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 24 hours of lectures, 12 hours of tutorials, and 24 hours of Nursing Laboratory per semester.

 

This unit builds on the students learning from semesters 1,2 and 3. It focuses on the impact of lifestyle factors on health and illness. Emphasis is placed upon acute care across the lifespan, and applications of concepts of pathophysiology and pharmacology related to alterations in mobility, circulation and respiration. In addition, utilisation of clinical decision-making skills will enable students to develop nursing care for those who experience alterations in the associated functional health patterns. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect critically on the influence that health promotion has on the person, family and community in a variety of contexts. The nurses’ roles and responsibilities for assisting others to achieve their optimal health status in a variety of contexts will be examined from a holistic perspective.

NRSG241 Spirituality in Health Care                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 24 hours lectures and 12 hours of tutorials per semester.

 

This unit explores spirituality from multiple views including Eastern, Western Indigenous, Christian and secular perspectives. Students will examine spirituality in the contexts of health care for the human person in states of health and illness. The role of the health professional is examined using own life experiences and self-reflection to articulate a personal meaning of spirituality. Spiritual needs, spiritual distress, spiritual practices and the role of the health professional are addressed.
