EXSC600 Thesis (Full-time)                                                                                                                  80 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Student centred learning and research under the supervision of nominated staff.

 

The master’s thesis involves the completion of and reporting on a major research project on an approved topic within Exercise Science. Enrolled students will be required to attend prescribed research seminars and staff colloquia. They will normally be expected to satisfactorily defend their proposal by presentation at an appropriate postgraduate colloquium before commencing the research.

EXSC609 Scientific and Clinical Report Writing                                                                                   10 cp

Scientific writing involves the production of work that utilises the English language in a clear and concise manner yet follows a format and style not generally observed in English Literature. Therefore, this unit will address issues pertaining to the art of writing a scientific document. Formats to be covered will include the writing of an original scientific article, thesis, clinical report, research proposal or a piece for a newspaper or magazine, whilst also addressing issues concerning the production of grant proposals, conference abstracts, posters and oral presentations.

EXSC610 Exercise and Metabolic Syndrome                                                                                       10 cp

This unit will review the current medical scientific knowledge and understanding of metabolic conditions such as: obesity, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, anaemia, hyperlipidemia. An examination of the mechanisms involved and the processes that will lead to functional restoration, maintenance or adaptation that enhance quality of life will form a major focus of this unit. Methodological aspects of the clinical assessment will be discussed and demonstrated together with the principles of available exercise prescription and treatment therapies.

EXSC611 Ergonomics of Exercise                                                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC 340 or equivalent

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

Functional movement is limited by the mechanical characteristics and structure of human body parts, as well as the design characteristics of facilities and equipment in sport, exercise, and everyday life. Knowledge of the mechanical properties of the human body is important to enable remedial treatment and advances in sport rehabilitation and injury prevention. Similarly, an understanding of ergonomics can reduce the incidence of sport injuries in recreational and elite athletes. This unit provides knowledge of technical, philosophical, and ethical issues related to client assessment and analysis, with a focus on the feedback process.

EXSC612 Management of a Clinical Business                                                                                      10 cp

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials per semester.

 

This unit provides an introduction to management principles as they apply to the development and delivery of exercise prescription services. The emphasis is on effectiveness in the small business environment and the professional and business value of a focus on the needs and dignity of the client. A need to monitor the operating environment and be committed to the notion of continuous improvement informs the concept of a professional human service which underpins this unit.

EXSC613 Exercise and Ageing                                                                                                             10 cp

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit examines the interaction between exercise and ageing. It highlights the various forms of exercise that are safe for the older person. Research has highlighted individual differences in structure, capacity and endurance as people change with age. These changes are reviewed in the context of factors of motor coordination, motor control, and skill learning for older adults. The prescription of exercise for enhancing physical–psychosocial dimensions such as health and cognitive function are discussed. EXSC614 Pharmacology and Exercise                                                                                                                                 10 cp

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit explains the basic principles of drug action, administration and elimination in the human and the effects of exercise upon the substance. It will examine the corollary of the influence of substance upon performance. The major classes of drugs will be examined and their effect upon the human across the lifespan. Emphasis will be placed on drugs used in rehabilitation, prescription, and performance enhancement. Dangers and ethical considerations will form a major component of this analysis.

EXSC615 Project                                                                                                                                  20 cp

Teaching Organisation Meetings with supervisor.

 

This unit will focus upon the gathering, interpretation and presentation of clinical data in the form of an in-depth case study under the supervision of an academic staff member appointed by the Head of School. The formulation of the problem and the strategy for data collection will be subject to peer and ethical review before data collection can occur.

EXSC616 Physiological and Pathophysiological Bases of Asthma                                                       10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 48 hours per semester.

 

This course of lectures, seminars and practical sessions will review the current medical scientific understanding of knowledge about exercise and asthma. Recent medical journal articles and monographs will be cited to examine the mechanisms involved in the airway hyper-reactivity associated with the asthmatic state and an asthma attack. Methodological aspects of the clinical assessment of asthma severity will be discussed and demonstrated together with the implications forexercise behaviour of available anti- asthma treatment therapies.

EXSC617 Exercise and Epidemiology of Asthma                                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 48 hours per semester.

 

This course of lectures, seminars and practical sessions will focus on the epidemiology of asthma. The interaction between genetic and environmental factors determining the natural history of asthma will be explored. The complex association of asthma with exercise, especially in children, and associated lifestyle risk factors including smoking, diet, overweight and lack of physical activity will be considered. The influence of asthma on quality of life and a review of the community responses to supporting families with an asthmatic member will be reviewed.

This unit addresses the processes and systems necessary to develop a scientific approach to training a group with specific goals in mind. It concentrates upon identifying and maintaining the conditions that are necessary to cope with the different individual needs that are based in the context of a team approach. The complex processes of monitoring and assessing are essential to ensure a group’s progress towards the achievement of stated goals.

This unit will analyse the impact of selected pathologies upon human physical and motor performance. Specifically, the effect of acute and chronic exercise on the pathology and on the health of the individual in general will be investigated. Principles for exercise protocols and program delivery techniques specific to the needs of special populations in the community will be developed. Strategies for planning and implementing interventions designed to address specific functional fitness problems in the special populations will be reviewed. Finally, the validity and efficacy of current assessment protocols will be evaluated.

EXSC660 Policy Development in Sport                                                                                                10 cp

Social, public and corporate policies contribute a major part of the context within which sport and exercise services are delivered, nationally and internationally. The focus of this unit is on the analysis of policy development and implementation relevant to sport and its impact on the way the sport industry has developed. It provides a background essential for understanding local national and international frameworks for the planning and delivery of sport and exercise services and infrastructure.

EXSC661 Sport Law and the Regulatory Environment                                                                         10 cp

This unit introduces the student to the most relevant areas of law, impacting on managers in Sport and Exercise enterprises. The focus will be on the general regulatory environment faced by managers and related knowledge and analysis of the legal concepts, practices and principles underlying both the operations of professional sport and the delivery of sport and exercise services to the public. The emphasis will be on the prevention of potential legal problems and the minimization of risk.

Since the advent of US President Nixon’s ‘ping pong diplomacy’ sport has been at the forefront of the globalisation process during the second half of the 20th Century. Led by the Olympic Games and driven by the global media, world sporting festivals have proven to be major economic bonanza to host countries. Multi national corporations such as IMG, News International have developed in support of international sport and the expertise of international athletes, coaches and administrators is a prominent part of the global labour market. This unit analyses current trends with regard to sport in the global economy and predicts future opportunities and developments.

EXSC663 Sports Marketing and Communication                                                                                  10 cp

This unit builds on marketing knowledge and principles to identify and review strategies relevant to sport and exercise Some topics reviewed include criteria for effective market segmentation, market research and product development. Some emphasis is placed on strategies for information management and communication with internal and external markets. Promotional tools such as advertising, publicity, incentives are analysed. Strategies for corporate sponsorship fundraising and public relations are identified.

EXSC664 Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management in Sport and Exercise                         10 cp

As a relative newcomer operating within the current business environment, the delivery of sport and exercise services offers a unique range of possibilities. Opportunities are available to meet the needs of a range of market segments the young, the elderly, the clumsy and obese, the athletic and adventurous with a range of products. A growing number of people in the industry work as sole operators or in small and flexible businesses. This unit examines the basis of successful practice in this domain and the skills and processes whereby creative ideas are born and brought to successful outcomes.

EXSC665 Facility and Event Management for Sport and Exercise                                                       10 cp

This unit provides an overview of management responsibilities and issues in the areas of facility and event management. Issues addressed include planning and design; operations, maintenance and compliance: marketing and public relations. Principles identified will ensure the applicability of the content to a broad range of general and specific purpose facilities. A detailed review of Event planning and management is incorporated in the context of program development.

In high performance sport the athlete or player is the product and one of the most important decisions the professional sportsperson will make is in the appointment of their management and support team. At the beginning end of the scale young elite sports people are taught self management by their sports associations and the institutes through the athlete career and education programs. This unit examines the professional management needs of the modern athlete and the skills required to optimize their personal professional and performance development.

To be successful in business in any environment, an awareness of and sensitivity to the host culture is generally seen as a pre-requisite. This unit looks at the issue of culture and politics in sport and their relationship with local and national cultures and politics. Implications for the achievement and maintenance of successful business cultures such as in total quality management and best practice are also identified.
