EXSC300 Ethics, Law and Exercise Science Practice                                                                          10 cp

Prerequisites 90 credit points EXSC units

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit takes a problem-centred approach to ethics and moral decision-making in sport and physical activity. Current legislation of importance to the exercise science professional is then highlighted together with an identification of professional responsibility under the law.

EXSC305 Directed Research Study in Exercise Science                                                                      10 cp

Prerequisites 90 credit points EXSC units and Head of School permission

Teaching Organisation Student centred learning and research under the supervision of nominated staff.

 

This provides students with the opportunity for specialised study in an area within Exercise Science. Students will need to have a 250 word outline proposal and an approved sequence before enrolment.

EXSC306 Independent Study in Exercise Science                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites 90 credit points EXSC units and Head of School permission

Teaching Organisation Student centred learning and research under the supervision of nominated staff.

 

This provides students with the opportunity to complete focused studies and supervised readings. It is designed to allow students to engage in a high level of inquiry directly related to areas of demonstrated interest and / or involvement.

EXSC320 Advanced Biomechanics                                                                                                      10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC220 Biomechanics

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit will extend the knowledge of biomechanics and its application in the analysis and description of human movement. The kinematic and kinetic aspects and the energetics of human gait from infancy to old age will be examined. Familiarity with the instrumentation used in the biomechanical analysis of human motion will be developed.

EXSC330 Advanced Motor Control and Learning                                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC230 Motor Control and Learning

Teaching Organisation 36 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

The unit will extend the knowledge gained in the core study of motor control and learning of contemporary theories and measurements that seek to answer the questions of how humans control and learn motor skills. Topical issues relating to information processing and action systems will be used to assist students in a systematic task-based approach to the improvement of skilled performance.

EXSC335 Advanced Exercise and Sport Psychology                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC235 Sport Psychology and EXSC236 Exercise Psychology

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit further develops the relationship of psychological factors underlying typical health, exercise, and sport behaviour/patterns. The focus of this unit is on psychological processes within special populations, the theory and practice of psychological skills training programming, the role of the exercise and sport psychologist as a team member within exercise, and sports science teams and the link between research and practice.

Prerequisites EXSC240 Exercise Physiology

This unit extends the basic knowledge of exercise physiology within the context of human performance in varying environments. In developing an understanding of complex physiological control mechanisms during exercise students will be directed towards current research and contemporary techniques in the field.

EXSC345 Exercise Programming                                                                                                         10 cp

Prerequisites 90 credit points EXSC units

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit will extend students’ knowledge of core exercise physiology in an examination of the principles necessary to design an exercise program suitable to varying individual needs. It will offer supervised laboratory experiences in testing and prescription and exposure to a range of current practices and a variety of forms of service provision.

EXSC346 Exercise Rehabilitation                                                                                                         10 cp

Prerequisites 90 credit points EXSC units

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit will examine the therapeutic management and rehabilitation of exercise, sport and accident-related injuries. Injury prevention and assessment principles will be examined in an explanation of the practitioner’s role in rehabilitation.

EXSC347 Nutrition and Exercise                                                                                                          10 cp

Prerequisites 90 credit points EXSC units

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit examines the function, structure, and nature of nutrients in the human body. It also examines the energy value of food, human energy expenditure, human energy requirements, nutritional needs of non-athletes and athletes (RDIs), consequences of eating disorders, food preparation and storage, healthy nutrition, and substance abuse (for example, alcohol).

EXSC348 Exercise, Sport Safety and Injury Management                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites: 90 credit points EXSC units

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit examines the prevention of sporting injuries and exercise safety. It also examines the principles of injury assessment and treatment and aspects of soft and hard tissue injuries.

EXSC350 HPE 3 - Games and Sport Skills                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 120 hours of focused learning consisting of lectures, workshops, activity experiences and competitions.

 

This unit is designed to provide students with a broad knowledge of games and games skills that might be used to provide personal development and core learning experiences within a health and physical education curriculum. A developmental perspective is taken showing how games skill development can move from a generic framework to specific and highly specialised sports participation. Throughout this process reference is made to ways in which principles derived from current Exercise Science knowledge can be applied in order to evaluate the effectiveness of chosen activities. These activities contribute both to the goals of coaching and educational programs and the achievement of personal development outcomes for a range of individual abilities and experience.

Sporting events have become a major part of the calendar in all nations and the management of such events offers major career opportunities within sport. This unit examines the skills and demands of event management including planning, control, task analysis and financial appraisal. Attention is drawn to the need for ecologically responsible decision-making.

EXSC361 Human Resources in Sport and Physical Activity Management                                            10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC260 Introduction to Sport Management and EXSC261 Sport Policy Making and Planning

In the delivery of sport and physical activity services the human resource is central. This unit provides sport and physical activity managers with essential background in policy regulation and procedures involved in the management of human resources. A review of theoretical approaches to human resources management provides the context for the development of techniques and strategies to optimise effective use of this key resource.

This unit introduces the potential sports manager to the basic principles of budgeting and financial control. In a turbulent environment sports managers face a host of problems in adapting to changing challenges. This unit introduces students to systems thinking as a means of conceptualising problems faced by sports organisations, and utilises the concept of total systems intervention (TSI) as a means of developing effective problem-solving skills.

EXSC364 Marketing and Promoting Sport, Leisure and Physical Activity                                            10 cp

This unit introduces students to the concepts of marketing which are then applied to the commercial world of sport, leisure and physical activity. Some emphasis is placed on market analysis by focusing on the competitive environment, industry, and product life cycles, and human behaviour. Implications for the marketing mix and guidelines for international marketing provide a focus for adaptive strategies.

Policy-making and delivery in health promotion at a national and local level provide the focus of this unit. The relationship with ideology is discussed and current issues facing health policy makers identified.

EXSC381 Programs and Practices for Health Promotion                                                                      10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC380 Foundations of Health Promotion Policy

The movement from policy and theory to programs and practice is traced in this unit. The focus is on the development of hands-on programming and practical techniques. Contemporary examples and methods will be reviewed.

EXSC390 Leadership Practices and the Outdoor Experience                                                              10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC290 the Marine Environment and the Outdoor Experience and EXSC291 Alpine Ecology and the Outdoor Experience

This unit will focus upon key leadership issues in the planning, management and safe execution of an outdoor adventure experience. It will use simulations and real-life experiences to develop a consistent best-practice approach to adventure activities. The effect of changing and challenging environments on the social psychology of the individual and the group will be examined.

EXSC391 Evaluation of Outdoor Experience                                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC390 Leadership Practices and the Outdoor Experience

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit will focus on the development of methods to evaluate outdoor experiences. Current issues in the planning process through to the debriefing session will be used to model the safest method to plan a major outdoor experience. Outcomes will be set in the context of a comprehensive program and the experience of an extended expedition.
