EXSC100 Introduction to Research Methods in Exercise Science                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit provides an introduction to research methodologies in exercise science with a view to equipping students to interpret and critique current knowledge in the discipline. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches will be addressed.

EXSC110 Anatomical Bases of Exercise Science                                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

The unit provides a broad understanding of the major body systems and the interrelationship of these systems. Surface, gross, systemic microscopic, regional, and developmental anatomy will be applied to exercise science, body mechanics, skill development, and the implications for good health.

EXSC120 Mechanical Bases of Exercise Science                                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

This unit provides an introduction to the mechanical principles that provide the starting point in the theories of biomechanics. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques will be addressed in a review of strategies for the analysis and description of human and projectile motion.

EXSC130 Foundations of Motor Development and Behaviour                                                              10 cp

This unit will provide the foundation studies for the sequences and changes that occur in motor development during the lifespan from birth to old age. Contemporary theoretical approaches will be used to explain current applications, measurement, and best practice.

Students will undertake studies based upon coaching science. There is an emphasis placed upon the basic principles of coaching sport as a science and developing philosophy that recognises a systematic and progressive introduction of the skills of coaching. Throughout the course the emphasis is developing a range of professional coaching skills, and the attainment of vocational qualifications pertinent to this area of study.

EXSC140 Physiological Bases of Exercise Science                                                                              10 cp

This unit provides an introduction to human physiological processes from an exercise science viewpoint. It forms the basis for further studies of physiological functioning throughout the lifespan and the interrelationships of systems in the context of exercise stress.

EXSC141 Training and Conditioning Principles                                                                                   10 cp

This unit introduces the influence of exercise upon the quality of daily functioning involved as a human moves. The scientific principles of exercise during sport performance are applied and exercise as an agent for rehabilitation from injury is also investigated. In particular, strength and resistance training is applied from a lifespan perspective to example the concepts of exercise specificity, measurement of exercise quality, program planning and prescription to achieve specific goals. Students will be challenged to design a specific personal program based upon their current participation in exercise.

EXSC150 HPE 1 - Acquatics and Athletics                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 120 hours of focused learning consisting of lectures, workshops, activity experiences and school and community site visits.

 

This unit is designed to provide students with knowledge about aquatics and athletics activities and how they might be used to provide core learning experiences within a health and physical education curriculum. A developmental perspective is taken and reference is made to ways in which principles derived from current Exercise Science knowledge can be applied in order to evaluate the effectiveness of selected activities. These activities contribute both to the goals of educational programs and the achievement of physical education-related outcomes for a range of individual abilities and experience.

EXSC180 Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit provides an introduction to the principles and practice of health promotion. The emphasis is on the contribution of lifestyle to the prevention of disease and optimisation of health status. The role of physical activity in health will be highlighted.

The focus of this unit is on the prevention of disease in 20th century Australian society, and the identification of strategies to optimise human well-being. The pathophysiology of common illnesses and disorder will be examined in the context of heredity, nutrition, and environment.

 

 

EXSC182 Promotion of Mental Health                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit explores aspects associated with optimisation of mental well-being and overall health status leading to enhanced social and emotional well-being. Ways of understanding aspects of the whole person are explored. Emphasis is placed on holistic or balanced health constituting spiritual, social and emotional health.

This unit will establish a theoretical foundation to introduce students to the study of recreation. Students will be encouraged to examine their personal philosophy while developing an understanding of environments and choices available for recreational opportunities.

EXSC191 Journeying in the Natural World                                                                                           10 cp

Prerequisites   EXSC190 Foundations of Outdoor Experience

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit will introduce contemporary issues, theories and practices of recreation based in the outdoors. It will use models and simulations to integrate the content with current best practices. The importance of self-management and self-participation in pursuing challenges associated with the outdoors will be emphasised.

EXSC210 Functional Anatomy                                                                                                              10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC110 Anatomical Bases of Exercise Science

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and one 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit further develops the musculoskeletal knowledge presented in EXSC110. It will provide students with the competence to analyse movement in anatomical terms, and to determine the working muscles of the body. Students will be able to recognise inappropriate performance and contra-indicated activity through the application of sound kinesiological principles. The use of profiling for talent identification will be discussed.

EXSC220 Biomechanics                                                                                                                       10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC120 Mechanical Bases of Exercise Science

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and one 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit applies knowledge of the mechanical basis of exercise science to the analysis and description of basic, adapted, and goal oriented motion. The kinematic and kinetic characteristics of selected movements will be analysed in association with understanding of the neuromuscular aspect of exercise science and the biological material properties of the human body.

Prerequisites EXSC130 Foundations of Motor Development and Behaviour

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and one 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit reviews current theoretical explanations of the acquisition and performance of motor skills to develop an effective base for practice. Practice settings, conditions and schedules are critically analysed for their effect on the performance, acquisition and retention of motor skills. Students are introduced to the use and implementation of standardised tests of motor proficiency.

This unit provides an extension to the introduction of coaching as a sport science. Students will critically evaluate the skills involved in coaching as a sports science; evaluate the ideal professional practice in coaching and consider the issues of ethical practice in coaching. Throughout the unit the student will be encouraged to adopt and communicate a personal philosophy of coaching that is scientifically systematic, ethical in approach and current in accordance with state of the art coaching skills.

Prerequisites EXSC130 Foundations of Motor Development and Behaviour and EXSC230 Motor Control and Learning

This unit provides an introduction to the basic concepts of sport psychology of relevance to coaches and athletes seeking to understand psychological dimensions of sports performance. The efficacy of common interventions will be assessed through practical experiences and critical review of underlying theory.

Prerequisites EXSC130 Foundations of Motor Development and Behaviour and EXSC230 Motor Control and Learning

This unit develops an understanding of the psychological factors underlying human movement performance and behaviour in exercise and health. The issues of exercise take-up and adherence will be highlighted, and the theoretical underpinning of current interventions and motivational strategies analysed.

EXSC240 Exercise Physiology                                                                                                              10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC140 Physiological Bases of Exercise Science

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and one 24 hours of laboratory per semester.

 

This unit develops basic physiological knowledge applied to the topic of exercise under various environmental conditions. Students will be introduced to contemporary themes in the field. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic techniques for the evaluation of human performance.

EXSC241 Programming Resistance Training                                                                                       10 cp

This unit builds upon the basic scientific principles of strength and conditioning and focuses upon the different programming techniques that enable prescription of exercises across the lifespan. Strength and conditioning principles will be applied to sports performance enhancement as well as exercises for rehabilitation from injury. Students will be challenged to design a number of specific programs for different stages of the lifespan from childhood to old age by using scientific principles.

EXSC250 HPE 2 - Gymnastics and Dance                                                                                             10 cp

This unit is designed to provide students with knowledge about gymnastics and dance activities and how they might be used to provide personal development and core learning experiences within a health and physical education curriculum. This unit provides an introduction to the task of sports management. Management and leadership theories are reviewed in the context of the structures of contemporary Australian sport. Some priority is given to the place of ethics and values in the application of management techniques. Examples will be drawn from both facility and program management.

EXSC261 Sport Policy Making and Planning                                                                                       10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC260 Introduction to Sport Management

Familiarisation with social, public, and corporate policies and familiarisation with them and their implementation will form the basis of this unit. Sport and its management are seen as dependent upon the context provided by major forces in these three domains. Emphasis will be placed on the skills of analysis and evaluation and the implications for facility planning and development.

This unit addresses a critical health issue in contemporary society – that of the use and misuse of pharmacological substances. Particular attention is paid to the development of drug education strategies and the need to recognise the cultural, social, personal and environmental factors relating to drug use and abuse.

EXSC281 Interpersonal Health                                                                                                             10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC280 Drugs and Society

This unit addresses the issues related to interpersonal health. Human relationships and sexuality are explored in the context of physical, mental, emotional, and social influences. The contribution of communication and presentation techniques in healthy interpersonal relationships is highlighted, and relevant strategies identified.

EXSC290 The Marine Environment and the Outdoor Experience                                                         10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC190 Foundations of Outdoor Experience and EXSC191 Journeying in the Natural World

Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.

 

This unit will develop an understanding of the planning, management and safety requirements for the performance of activity in the outdoors. Models and applications that have an environmentally neutral effect will be used to explain the theoretical approaches behind the content. Basic competencies will be used as a platform for development of an understanding of the outdoors.

EXSC291 Alpine Ecology and the Outdoor Experience                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites EXSC290 The Marine Environment and the Outdoor Experience

This unit will further develop concepts introduced in previous units with an emphasis on nature-based recreation experiences. It will explain and develop eco-tourism and eco-recreation as viable options in the development of current policy. Benefits for a healthy lifestyle will be highlighted.
