EDSS602 Career Advice and Counselling                                                                                            10 cp

 

This unit aims to examine, investigate and analyse the nature and some of the theories of career counselling and to develop some basic counselling skills and techniques which will assist students in facilitating the careers counselling process. At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to recognise and analyse the value of various theories in careers counselling practise, use a variety of counselling skills, techniques and methods and to be able to analyse and relate information of a personal and professional nature in the counselling process. This will be addressed within a framework of people’s career development.

 

EDSS603 Changing Nature of Work                                                                                                     10 cp

 

This unit focuses in the interrelationships between society, politics, economics, technology and work. The concept of work is then further investigated in terms of ethical and societal issues, government involvement and economic analysis of the work force in the Australian economy, labour demand and supply, and the global economy. Particular attention will be given to the role that education plays in the quality of the work-force and the capability of people to find work. Finally, the future of work, is considered in the context of recent trends relating to the growth of small and medium sized business enterprises, as well as issues such as converging technologies and the knowledge economy, flexible work structures and perceived job skills requirements in the 21st Century.

 

EDSS604 Community Assistance for Work Seekers                                                                              10 cp

 

The unit will investigate some of the relationships between the community and the teaching of Career Education. It will focus on the provision of information by the community, community perception, attitudes and concerns and action by the community – resources, facilities and assistance. The term “community” will be interpreted widely to range from government services to local newspapers. The roles of individuals and groups – parents, schools, service clubs, local industries, local state and federal government involvement and initiatives will be considered. Agencies, which assist in career choice, training and retraining and in meeting problems resulting from unemployment, will be investigated. Experiential learning as a strategy for young people will be examined. This approach will characterise the work done in this unit.

 

EDSS605 Curriculum Strategies for Career and Work Education                                                         10 cp

 

The priority goals for this unit are directed toward the introduction of innovative teaching and learning approaches, which will be of use in school-based Career Education programs. A school to work approach will be adopted featuring cooperative, action and experiential learning. The impact of change within the workplace as it relates to teaching and learning will also be examined in the light of the nature of personal and societal transition.

 

EDSS606 Nature and Role of Vocational Education                                                                             10 cp

 

This unit will examine vocational education and learning from both an international and national perspective. All topics will be addressed with respect to social justice and equity agendas. Topics covered will include the Federal and State Government agenda on vocational education as well as OECD reports and links between employment and education. Issues raised in reports such as the Finn/Mayer/Carmichael reports will be analysed. The implications of the variety of potential funding resources including Federal Government for example, ANTA, ASTF will be discussed.

 

EDSS607 Vocational Education and Post-School Options                                                                    10 cp

 

This unit offers participants opportunities to examine a variety of pathways to work, further training and education. Issues such as the equity agenda and vocational education structures through traineeships are discussed. The roles of schools and staff are critiqued. Credit transfer, advanced standing arrangements and procedures and other means of accreditation, will be reviewed.

 

EDSS608 Vocational Education: Learning and the Curriculum                                                            10 cp

 

This unit focuses on the means teachers have to deal with Vocational Learning within the curriculum. Curriculum frameworks, requirements, structures and resources relevant to vocational education are examined. The existing curriculum is mapped for relevant knowledge and understanding, skills and values and attitude outcomes to aid participants in designing a pathway of vocational learning. The role of school, TAFE and private providers in vocational education and learning is highlighted. Particular curriculum areas; eg TAS; are considered within the vocational education agenda. Topics such as Key Competencies, Enterprise Education Skills and work placement and their role in vocational education and learning are profiled.

 

EDSS609 Counselling for Career Development                                                                                    10 cp

 

A range of counselling strategies underpinned by career counselling theories will be demonstrated and examined in this unit which aims to develop professionalswho can adapt to a wide range of individuals and school settings. Consideration will also be given to the physical aspects of the counselling environment that impact upon students and caregivers.

 

EDSS610 Educating for Lifelong Career Development                                                                         10 cp

 

This practical subject focuses on innovative teaching and learning strategies for career and work education for students to make successful transitions to further education, training and work. A wide range of strategies will be demonstrated and evaluated so as to providecareers professionals with a wide range of learning activities designed to develop in students competencies from the Australian Blueprint for Career Development. Special consideration will be given to the role of government and community agencies and strategies for collaborative action with schools.

 

EDSS611 Professional Practice and Development                                                                               10 cp

 

This unit concentrates on developing skills for researching information, building relationships and making effective presentations in school settings that foster a whole school culture of career development for students. Particular emphasis is given to the design, implementation, management and evaluation of career development programs for students from the middle years to young adults. It aims to develop in practitioners a culture of ongoing professional development in a dynamic educational and work environment. There is a mandatory two day professional placement in an educational setting which aims to provide a realistic view of a broad range of client services.

 

EDSS612 The Postmodern Global Workplace                                                                                      10 cp

 

This unit examines issues in the workplace that affect the individual and society as a whole, ranging from work/life balance issues to skills shortages that are impacting on the economy. There is an emphasis on modern human resource practice and its effect on resume preparation, interviews and personality/vocational tests. Consideration will also be given to employability and enterprise skills and the way these are affecting the workplace and preparation for employment. Special emphasis will be given to the reforms in the national training framework with particular reference to vocational education in schools.
