EDSS418 Commerce and Business Studies Curriculum and Teaching 3                                              10 cp

 

The unit will examine the critical literacy skills required in Commerce VET subjects in order to meet the key vocational competencies set out in the Commerce VET units. In addition, students undertaking this method will further develop a critical awareness of the relationship between strong literacy skills and the development of critical skills required in Commerce subjects (state curriculum documents). The mastery of these essential skills, such as; analysis of material, case studies etc, interpretation of material, synthesis, essay writing, argumentative responses, critical evaluation, is pivotal to the achievement of a satisfactory-high standard in Commerce and Business Studies subjects.

 

EDSS419 Commerce and Business Studies Curriculum and Teaching 4                                              10 cp

 

This unit addresses the major issues affecting the shape and character of commerce and business education, such as the relationship between school and work, transition to work and /or higher education, lifelong learning, questions of gender and equity, multicultural policy and the recognition of the values, beliefs and traditions of particular groups. Students will explore the way in which the learning needs of a wide range of students in secondary school can be met through innovative curriculum design that engages students in experiential community- based programs. Particular attention is focused on program designs such as the Student Action Teams: Learning in the Community.

EDSS422 Humanities Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                                                10 cp

 

This unit is designed for student teachers to develop an understanding of the way in which Humanities are taught and studied in Years 7 to 10 in secondary schools. Student teachers will be introduced to methods for designing and implementing lessons and units of work and to methods of assessing and evaluating students’ learning. Learning and teaching strategies, including inquiry approaches to learning and the use of technology, which are appropriate for students with different abilities and which will develop their knowledge, skills, behaviours and values are an integral part of the unit.

 

EDSS423 Humanities Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                                                10 cp

 

This unit is designed for student teachers to develop an understanding of the way in which the Studies of Classical Societies, Contemporary Australian Society, History (Australian History, Renaissance Italy, and Revolutions), International Studies and Political Studies, are taught and studied in Years11 and 12. The relevant state curriculum documents which describe the different Studies are introduced to the student teachers. Methods for developing courses “…that include appropriate learning activities, [with special reference given to information technology and new learning technologies], to enable students to develop the knowledge and skills identified in the outcome statements in each unit “are explored. Attention is given to assessment and reporting. The different assessment priorities for Units 1 and 2 and Units 3 and 4 are examined and practice is undertaken in the selection of appropriate assessment tasks and relevant correction processes.

This unit is designed to develop in students a critical awareness of a range of approaches, resources and procedures applicable to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation in Commerce 7-10 and Business Studies. Business Studies encompasses subjects such as Business Management, Accounting, Economics, Industry and Enterprise, and Legal Studies. The unit provides for the cumulative development of planning skills from lesson planning through to planning units of work and involves exposing students to a range of increasingly complex teaching and learning strategies and resources. It is also designed to develop in students a critical awareness of a range of approaches, resources and procedures applicable to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation in Commerce 7-10 and Business Studies.

This unit is designed for students to develop an understanding of the way in which studies of society and its environment are taught and studied in secondary schools. Reference is made to Studies of Society and Environment as a key learning area in the relevant national and state curriculum documents and to those specialised social science disciplines (for example, history, geography, politics) which reflect the “differentiation of knowledge”, skills and values specific to those disciplines. The planning and development of lessons and units of work for teaching SOSE related disciplines and the assessment and evaluation of students’ learning are studied. Emphasis is placed on particular strategies and techniques and the role of technology in the effective teaching of SOSE related disciplines.

 

EDSS428 Connecting Society and Environment                                                                                    10 cp

This unit is concerned with examining the patterns of interaction amongst humanity in various socio-cultural, political and environmental settings throughout time. It focuses on pre-service teachers as educators who will prepare society’s future adults to be critical thinkers functioning effectively within a rapidly changing society. Pre-service teachers should be able to make connections between the various elements of society such as environments, time, change and continuity, culture, identity and systems, resources and power. Emphasis is placed on particular strategies and techniques such as inquiry learning and the use of ICT both in the effective teaching of SOSE/HSIE/HUMANITIES and in daily living.

The pre-service teachers will be provided with a rationale for examining the nature, purpose and processes of social and environmental education. They will be introduced to methods for designing, implementing and evaluating units of work in accordance with the various state and territory documents. These units will include learning and teaching strategies appropriate for children with different abilities and will develop children’s knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours related to the world in which they live.

EDSS436 Humanities Teaching and Learning 1                                                                                   10 cp

 

This unit is designed to provide participants with strategies for planning, implementing and monitoring learning experiences for students studying humanities subjects in schools. The unit will build on documents relating to curricula in these areas. There is a focus on primary and junior secondary subjects with special attention given to the critical role of language in developing understanding in these areas. The development of understanding in a range of humanities curriculum areas will be explored through the use of inquiry and problem based learning, physical and social based learning, disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning, and learning technologies. The unit proceeds to designing and implementing units of work and developing strategies for assessing learning experiences for students. Special attention will be given catering for individual differences. This unit is also designed to develop in students an awareness of the opportunity that the discipline of humanities provides for meeting literacy learning needs namely in the reading, writing, and interpretation of a range of written and visual texts.

 

EDSS437 Humanities Teaching and Learning 2                                                                                   10 cp

This unit is designed to enable participants to develop an understanding of the way in which the humanities disciplines are taught and studied in the secondary school. It is designed to further develop and extend the participants’ competence and ability in the planning of learning experiences which enable school students to develop the knowledge and skills identified in the school curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the last three years of secondary school assessment of learning, both formative and summative, and the importance of language use in learning will be underlying themes. The unit will build on documents relating to humanities curricula. There is a focus on the use of information and communication technologies with particular attention to the use of CD material and the World Wide Web. The unit proceeds to explore strategies for engaging secondary students in exploring and participating in authentic research. Special attention will be given to the development of literacies and catering for individual differences within classes

 

EDSS501 Pakistan Curriculum Studies                                                                                                 10 cp

 

This unit will prepare the students to teach Pakistan Studies and Social studies in secondary schools in Pakistan. It will develop in students a greater understanding of the history, geography and culture in Pakistan. The unit specifically focuses on the contribution of the Ulemas, Sufis, on the spread of Islam in the sub-continent and the role of Muslim leaders in the freedom movement. The unit also addresses the problems faced by Pakistan after its creation and the various constitutional developments, amendments and changes. The unit highlights the physical features and natural resources of Pakistan, Pakistan's relations with Islamic states and the international community.

 

EDSS502 Commerce Curriculum Studies                                                                                              10 cp

This unit is designed to prepare the students to teach commerce in secondary schools in Pakistan. It builds on the existing knowledge of theory and practices and relates them with the prevailing situation of the economical condition in Pakistan. This unit will focus on developing a practical understanding of pedagogical approaches appropriate to the teaching of commerce. The unit provides for the ongoing development of the student’s curriculum planning skills in the area of commerce teaching. It is also designed to develop in students an ability to critique a range of approaches to teaching and learning as well as resources available, including a critical evaluation of the text books used in Pakistan’s schools.

 

EDSS503 HSIE/SOSE Curriculum                                                                                                         10 cp

 

This unit will utilise adult learning principles to enrich, refine and extend student knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes related to learning and teaching in Human Society and its Environment. Students have the opportunity, in consultation with the lecturer, to develop aspects of the HSIE Syllabus to meet their particular learning and teaching needs. Students will be given some examples of contemporary issues to guide and assist them as they revisit their approach to learning and teaching in Human Society and its Environment. The program will be presented in a flexible manner so that individual learning needs can be accommodated as much as possible.
