EDSS100 Australia in an Asian Context                                                                                               10 cp

 

This unit is an introduction to Australia’s interaction with the complexity and diversity of Asia from various perspectives. The unit broadly surveys some of the major cultural, social and economic developments which have shaped the interactions between Australia and selected Asian nations over time. A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted.

 

EDSS308/430 Economics/Business Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                           10 cp

 

This unit is the first of a two-unit sequence that is designed to develop in students a critical awareness of a range of approaches, resources and procedures applicable to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation in Economics, Commerce and Business Studies. The two units provide for cumulative development of planning skills from single-strategy through to whole-course planning. Similarly, they expose students to a range of increasingly complex strategies and resources. The sequence enables students to draw upon and extend skills and knowledge acquired in Professional Studies units and to apply these to their teaching subjects. In so doing, students will also draw upon their foundation studies in Economics and/or Business for subject area content.

 

EDSS309/431 Economics/Business Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                           10 cp

EDSS310/432 Geography Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                                          10 cp

 

This unit is designed to prepare students to teach Geography in the junior secondary school. Students will become familiar with appropriate Geography syllabi and relevant teaching-learning strategies. The course will enable students to understand the role of Geography as an integral study of the spatial and ecological dimensions of the world. By identifying, analysing and utilising geographical skills and tools students will be able to gain an understanding of the processes and management of various environments. Through Geography students will develop an awareness of their responsibilities, as citizens, to the global environment.

 

EDSS311/433 Geography Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                                          10 cp

 

This unit is designed to further develop student understanding of the scope, techniques and methods used in teaching Geography at the senior secondary level. Students will gain an understanding of the complex nature of a changing world and how to incorporate these geographical aspects in the classroom. Skills will be developed to enable students to demonstrate an understanding of geographical inquiry methodologies applicable to the classroom. Using the local area as a research resource and fieldwork are an integral part of this course, developing a student’s ability to analyse the local environment, both biophysical and cultural, in terms of teaching Geography.

 

EDSS314/420 History Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                                                10 cp

 

This unit is designed to enable students to begin to understand teaching /learning methodologies of Secondary History. With particular reference to the teaching of history in junior secondary classes, students will consider appropriate classroom strategies which enable students to evaluate sources and make judgments based on them. Students will also develop strategies to enable their pupils to effectively communicate logical arguments concerning historical issues and to research and investigate historical problems. The teaching of history as an inquiry into past human experiences which can contribute to an understanding of the present is a recurrent theme in this unit.

 

EDSS315/421 History Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                                                10 cp

 

This unit builds upon and extends the foundation work commenced in the first semester unit on history curriculum. It is designed to enable students to begin to understand teaching /learning methodologies of Secondary History. With particular reference to the teaching of history in upper secondary classes, students will consider further appropriate classroom strategies which enable students to evaluate sources and make judgments based on them. Students will also continue to develop strategies to enable their pupils to effectively communicate logical arguments concerning historical issues and to research and investigate historical problems.

 

EDSS318 Legal Studies Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                                            10 cp

 

Legal Studies aims to impart knowledge and understanding about the relationship between law and society, the social functions of law, and the rights and responsibilities of the individual within the legal system. It further explores the successes and failures of law in its role of regulating social behaviour, deepening understanding about the relationship between the law and social change, including the possibilities for concerned citizens to participate in its reform. This unit is designed to enable students to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the effective teaching of Legal Studies in secondary schools. Students will become familiar with the aims, objectives, content, skills and assessment requirements of the Legal Studies syllabus. They will also identify and begin to practise appropriate teaching-learning strategies for classroom use, including those which will enable their pupils to acquire, organise and use information relevant to Legal Studies.

 

EDSS319 Legal Studies Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                                            10 cp

 

Legal Studies aims to impart knowledge and understanding about the relationship between the law and society, the social functions of law, and the rights and responsibilities of the individual within the legal system. It further explores the successes and failures of law in its role of regulating social behaviour, deepening understanding about the relationship between the law and social change, including the possibilities for concerned citizens to participate in its reform. This unit aims to enhance the abilities of students to refine the teaching-learning methodologies commenced in Legal Studies Curriculum and Teaching I. Students will emphasise and practise classroom strategies which enable their pupils to identify and resolve legal issues and evaluate controversial legal matters, including an ability to effectively design and communicate logical arguments concerning such issues and matters.

 

EDSS320/434 Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) Curriculum and Teaching 1                       10 cp

 

This unit prepares students for teaching Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) courses in secondary schools. Students will become familiar with the importance of the Social Sciences, SOSE and its background, the relevant syllabuses and the relationship between SOSE and thinking and learning.

SOSE is a complex learning area, which encompasses the disciplines of History, Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Law, and the learning area of civics and environmental studies. The unit provides opportunities for students to investigate the philosophical and pedagogical characteristics of the key learning area and to consider various ways of translating syllabus requirements into worthwhile curriculum units and teaching experiences.

 

EDSS321/435 Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) Curriculum and Teaching 2                       10 cp

 

This unit prepares students for the teaching of Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) courses in secondary schools. Students will investigate the content and skills relevant to a SOSE course along with an enquiry-based delivery approach. They will study planning for lessons and units of work, assessment associated with the delivery of SOSE and the role of technology in the SOSE area.

The unit provides opportunities for students to translate the philosophical and pedagogical characteristics of the key learning area and syllabus requirements into worthwhile curriculum units and learning experiences.

 

EDSS322 Studies of Society and Environment                                                                                     10 cp

 

Studies of Society and Environment is concerned with examining the patterns of interaction amongst humanity in various socio-cultural, political and environmental settings throughout time. This unit focuses on the student as educator, preparing society’s future adults to be critical thinkers functioning effectively within a rapidly changing society.

This unit is concerned with learning and teaching and curriculum, hence it will provide students with a rationale for examining the nature, purpose and processes of social education. Furthermore, the unit introduces students to methods for designing, implementing and evaluating units.

 

EDSS407 Human Society and its Environment 3                                                                                  10 cp

 

This unit aims to reinforce and refine knowledge and skills in the Key Learning Area of Studies of Society and Environment, by detailed examination of the availability and use of historical resources. The unit also emphasises different ways of presenting and communicating the results of inquiries in order to increase pupil interest and learning. Students will be required to locate and study a range of resources available for the development of knowledge and skills of a historical nature. While it is not a History unit, students will have the opportunity to consider some fundamental aspects of this discipline which are related to the Human Society and its Environment syllabus.

 

EDSS408 Human Society and Its Environment 4                                                                                  10 cp

 

This unit aims to reinforce and refine knowledge and skills in the Key Learning Area of Studies of Society and Environment, by detailed examination of the availability and use of geography resources. The unit emphasises different ways of presenting and communicating the results of inquiries in order to increase pupil interest and learning. Students will be required to locate and study a range of resources available for the development of knowledge and skills of a geographical nature. While it is not a Geography unit, students will have the opportunity to consider some fundamental aspects of this discipline which are related to the Human Society and its Environment syllabus.

 

EDSS409 Human Society and its Environment 5                                                                                  10 cp

 

This unit utilises adult learning principles to enrich, refine and extend students’ knowledge and understandings, skills, values and attitudes related to learning and teaching in Human Society and its Environment. Students, both in groups and as individuals, will, in consultation with the lecturer, negotiate the course content and two assessment modes. The lecturer will provide a range of contemporary issues in the field to guide the unit structure and to assist students to revitalise learning and teaching in Human Society and its Environment.

 

EDSS410 Basic Career Counselling Skills                                                                                            10 cp

 

In order to assist students’ transition from school to further education, careers counselling has a critical role to play. Through careers counselling students can be assisted to develop the necessary enterprise skills and be encouraged to gather, consider and evaluate information about themselves and the world of work in order to make and implement decisions relating to their future. This unit aims to introduce the nature of enterprise and some of the theories of career counselling, and to develop some basic counselling processes.

 

EDSS411 Career and Work Education and the Community                                                                  10 cp

 

In this unit some of the relationships between work and career education and the community will be investigated. Focus will be on the provision of services and information by the community, together with community perceptions, attitudes, concerns and actions. ‘Community’ will be interpreted widely, to range from federal and state governments to local newspapers. Agencies which assist in career choice, preparation and training, and in meeting problems which arise from unemployment will be investigated. Much of the work done in this unit will be of an experiential nature and will reflect the locations where the students may be employed.

 

EDSS412 Career and Work Education: Curriculum and Strategies                                                      10 cp

 

Approaches to and methods of teaching appropriate to work and career education will be examined in this unit. Study will involve ideas on developing self-awareness, career decision making and educational and training options. Preparation for employment and the possibility of periods of unemployment will be considered, as will the importance of career flexibility and lifelong learning to meet the challenge of workplace change.

 

EDSS413 Society, Politics, Economics, Technology and Work                                                            10 cp

 

Commencing with an overview of the concept of work and nature and place of employment throughout history, the focus of the unit will shift to a study of employment in the twenty-first century. Factors impacting on the changing nature, demands and availability of employment in Australia at present and in the near future will be considered, together with the importance of voluntary work and recreational activities to both the individual and society.

 

EDSS416 Commerce and Business Studies Curriculum and Teaching 1                                              10 cp

 

This unit is designed to develop in students’ competence and ability in the planning of teaching and learning experiences in commerce and business for middle school students within the context of relevant state curriculum documents. The unit also introduces students to senior school Business Studies. Business Studies encompasses subjects such as Business Management, Accounting, Economics, Industry and Enterprise, and Legal Studies. This unit is designed to develop students’ awareness of the literacy demands in commerce subjects; namely reading, writing, speaking, and the interpretation of a range of material both written and in a graphic format.

 

EDSS417 Commerce and Business Studies Curriculum and Teaching 2                                              10 cp

 

This unit is designed to extend a knowledge base for commerce and business studies education that will develop competence and ability in the planning of experiences for senior secondary school students within the context of the relevant state curriculum documents. Emphasis is placed on commerce and business education as an interdisciplinary way of knowing as well as a discipline-based domain. It is also designed to develop in students a critical awareness of a range of approaches, resources and procedures applicable to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation in Commerce 7-10 and Business Studies.
