EDPH101 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education 2                                                    10 cp

 

This unit follows directly on from the introductory unit EDPH103. The unit aims to continue curriculum development in PD/H/PE, with more emphasis on Health Education and Personal Development in the Primary School and integrating the content of the 4 syllabus strands tht focus primary on these issues. It will give insight into a range of curriculum materials strategies and processes and investigate the implications for Personal Development and Health Education within the Key Lerning Area of PDHPE with a strong emphasis on drug education, child protection education, sexuality education and personal health choices. Some further investigation of alternatives in teaching Gymnastics will be pursued. This will provide students with the knowledge, skills and understandings to be able to plan, program and teach effectively in all facets of the PDHPE syllabus.

 

EDPH103/418 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education 1                                              10 cp

 

This unit, through a combination of practical and theoretical experiences, will provide an introduction to the concepts of personal development and well-being. The focus on the role and relevance of health and physical education in the primary school setting, through a variety of healthy and enjoyable lifestyle activities, will also serve to reinforce the benefits of lifelong participation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the practical components of fundamental motor skills and aquatics.

 

EDPH104 Physical Education 1                                                                                                             10 cp

 

This unit is an extended study of factors relating to curriculum development, delivery and evaluation of specialised health and physical education programs and events in the primary school. Content will focus on both the theory and practice of living a physically active and healthy lifestyle while at school and in the years beyond. Students will also be expected to obtain an accredited qualification in a specialised area of the primary school health and physical education curriculum (eg. Austswim, Bike Education, Level 1 Coaching, Special Needs, Accreditation, Drug Education, ACHPER workshops and/or conferences).

 

EDPH204 Health Education                                                                                                                  10 cp

 

Health education is an area of study that is continually being redefined to include all that is relevant to wellness for the individual, families and the broader community. This unit will include content related to the health of individuals and populations and address community concerns and key initiatives in health education. Students will participate in activity-based workshops that address personal and community health topics as well as health issues relevant to their future working environments.

In an effort to assist teachers to develop and deliver appropriate health content for schools, there will be opportunities to collaborate with local health agencies to produce health education resources. The production of a health teaching-learning resource will enable students to develop methods of best practice when working with other community health educators to deliver health education programs in the school environment.

 

EDPH205 Motor Function and Development for Children with Disabilities                                           10 cp

 

This unit examines issues related to motor control and activity programming for children with special needs. Knowledge of this area will be extended by undertaking a community fieldwork placement with an organisation responsible for meeting the developmental needs of children with disabilities.

The assessment of motor ability in individuals with physical impairments will provide a theoretical base for devising suitable motor experiences and establishing methods of best practice for children with disabilities.

 

EDPH300/419 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching 1     10 cp

 

This unit examines the role and importance of physical education within Personal Development, Health and Physical Education curriculum and within the total curriculum. It reflects the focus of the Key Learning Area (KLA) on lifestyle management and the concern with the development of skills and behaviours, knowledge and understandings, values and attitudes which enable lifestyle management. This unit aims to increase knowledge of the curriculum and competence in planning and teaching physical education.

 

EDPH301/420 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching 2     10 cp

 

Human development encompasses physical, social, mental, emotional, moral and ethical areas of development. Lifestyle management is integral to individual development and the pursuit of well-being. It is the focus of the multidisciplinary area of study of personal development, health and physical education at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. This unit provides an overview of these areas and the background knowledge which will enable teachers to make more informed curricular decisions.

 

EDPH306 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education                                                        10 cp

This unit aims to examine curriculum and practice in Physical, Sport and Health Education. The effective development, implementation and assessment of a comprehensive Physical Education and Health curriculum can integrate into curriculum units and be applied to professional practice.

An understanding of curricula both local and national which is specific to Catholic, State and Independent schools will provide the focus of the unit. The unit will outline the importance of Personal Development Education in the primary school highlighting the health and well-being of students.

 

EDPH401 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching 3           10 cp

 

This unit is designed to introduce students to the concepts of the health promoting school and health promoting classroom. The unit aims to enable students to understand the role of parents and the wider community in the construction of effective curriculum in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Sensitive and controversial issues relevant to this area will be examined as they relate to curriculum construction, as will Catholic education policies and other relevant policies. The relationship between Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, the teacher and the law will be analysed, as will models of effective training environments. Students will also examine the nature and impact of National Competencies and Profiles in this unit.

 

EDPH402 Physical Education and Recreation Studies                                                                         10 cp

 

This unit begins with the school program. It aims to examine issues that are of practical relevance for the generalist and specialist PE teacher within the school. Both day-to-day programs of Physical and Recreation Education, as well as the whole school extension program in the above areas, be given major focus in students undertaking this unit.

 

EDPH404 Health Studies K–6: Health Education                                                                                   10 cp

 

The introduction of Health Studies as a curriculum area of study in the primary school necessitates the investigation of implementation strategies for primary teachers. Issues such as Road Safety Education, including Bike Education, Quit for Life, Jump Rope for Heart, Heart Health, Cancer Education, Personal Development in Primary Schools, Child Abuse and Peer Support programs will be included in the unit.

 

EDPH408 Health Studies K–6: Movement Education                                                                            10 cp

 

The introduction of Health Studies as a curriculum area of study in the primary school necessitates the investigation of notions of Health Studies and implementation strategies. Issues dealing with the implementation of the daily physical education program, dance as an art form, and the development of sport in schools and programming and organisational skills will be included in the unit.

 

EDPH409 Issues in Physical Education, Recreation, and Sport                                                            10 cp

 

This unit will introduce students to some of the issues facing teachers in implementing programs in physical and recreation education and it will make links with some of the key curriculum areas studied in previous units in personal development education.

 

EDPH411 Recreation and Outdoor Education in the Primary School                                                   10 cp

 

This unit will develop skills in a variety of outdoor education settings. Outdoor activities will be undertaken both from a problem-solving and interactive perspective. In addition, students will survey curriculum materials and resources in recreation and outdoor education for primary school children. The development of school-based outdoor education programs and appropriate evaluation procedures will be a feature of this unit.

 

EDPH412 Personal Development Health and Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching 4            10 cp

 

This unit is designed to enable students to understand and design preliminary and HSC courses for the 2-unit syllabus in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). It also aims to develop skills required in the design of examination and assessment tasks, as well as in formulating classroom strategies.

 

EDPH414 Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                                   10 cp

 

This unit examines teaching and learning strategies relevant to the planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of a comprehensive Physical Education curriculum including Health components. This unit of study is designed in accordance with the recommendations included in the state curriculum documents, which recognises the unique contribution of Physical Education and Health Studies in promoting the physical, social, mental and emotional health of individual, families and communities. Through a combination of theoretical and practical experiences, students will extend their curriculum competence and practical skills required for effective teaching in Physical Education and Health, in a secondary school environment (years 7- 10). At the completion of this unit students will be able to incorporate listening, reading and writing learning activities in the design of their learning and assessment strategies in years 7 – 10.

 

EDPH415 Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                                   10 cp

 

This unit will continue with the emphasis on developing Knowledge, practical skills, teaching competencies in both the theoretical and practical aspects of Physical Education and Health. Attention will be focused on the state curriculum documents Physical Education and Health and Human Development. There will be a close link with the subject content taught during the lecture program and the skills gained during professional experience undertaken in a range of schools.

This unit examines teaching and learning strategies relevant to the planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of a comprehensive Physical Education curriculum including health components. This focus will also include the development of skills and behaviours, knowledge and understandings, values and attitudes, which enable effective lifestyle management.

Studies in the unit address the issue of language and literacy learning, and provide a focus on listening, reading and writing learning activities within the Physical Education curriculum. Through a combination of practical and theoretical experiences, students will also extend their curriculum competence and practical skill repertoire required for the effective teaching of Physical Education in a secondary school environment.

Attention is given to the Health and Physical Education Study Designs – Health and Human Development and Physical Education within the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

EDPH500 PDHPE Curriculum                                                                                                                10 cp

 

The emphasis of this unit is to address the multi-dimensional nature of PDHPE in the primary curriculum and also in the context of a rapidly changing society. Students will be encouraged to explore contemporary issues which impact on the overall health and well being of primary aged children now and in their future lives. There is a focus on the concepts, knowledge base, pedagogy, delivery and issues involved in providing quality teaching and learning in PDHPE in the primary school. This will extend also to the appropriate assessing and evaluating of PDHPE related programs that are aimed at ensuring that children adopt practices and make decisions that will lead to the maintenance of a healthy and active lifestyle.
