This unit is designed to further investigate the link between the learning and teaching of mathematics. Contemporary theories of how children acquire mathematical understandings and teaching styles which are grounded within these theories will be carefully reviewed and evaluated. Students will develop and apply advanced reaching strategies within an inquiry-based approach, in order to focus and cater for the particular learning styles of children who are developing ways of thinking mathematically.

EDMA411 Number Development in the Middle School                                                                         10 cp

This unit offers a historical overview of the development of number and deals with some aspects of theory of number such as bases other than ten, finite arithmetic, multiples and factors, the number sets, field laws and operations within them. Mathematics education aspects will include aspects of numeracy, diagnosis and mixed ability classes.

EDMA412 Geometry and Measurement in the Middle School                                                              10 cp

Students are introduced to Euclidean geometry, transformation geometry, trigonometry and mensuration. Historical development of ideas of proof will be discussed. Mathematics education aspects will include the use of manipulatives and technology and the teaching of problem solving.

EDMA413 Statistics and Probability in the Middle School                                                                    10 cp

This unit takes students through introductory statistics and probability including both univariate and bivariate statistics and time series and includes simulations. Mathematics education aspects include the use of technology and real world applications as motivation for learning.

EDMA414 Algebra and Functions in the Middle School                                                                       10 cp

This unit looks at the development of algebra and a study of functions with modelling applications. Mathematics education aspects include error analysis, the use of graphic calculators, extending high achieving students and resources for algebra.

EDMA417 (see EDMA300) Mathematics Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                     10 cp

EDMA418 (see EDMA301) Mathematics Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                     10 cp

EDMA419 Mathematics Curriculum and Teaching 3                                                                             10 cp

This unit provides opportunities to study contemporary issues related to mathematics education in the school, the place of mathematics education in the school, numeracy across the curriculum and the role of the mathematics teacher, mathematics education in the community outside school, mathematics as part of integrated curriculum, catering for the diverse needs of students in the middle years in mathematics within the classroom, intervention strategies, and opportunities to provide appropriate challenges for those who have demonstrated high achievement.

EDMA420 Mathematics Curriculum and Teaching 4                                                                             10 cp

This unit provides opportunities to study cotemporary issues related to mathematics education in the school, the teaching of senior school as in year 11 and 12 courses within the State including the international Baccalaureate, curriculum coordination in mathematics education, the role of the mathematics teacher, mathematics education in the community outside school and other issues that fall within the responsibilities of a specialist mathematics education teacher.

EDMA421 Mathematic Method Part A                                                                                                     5 cp

EDMA422 Mathematic Method Part B                                                                                                     5 cp

The unit is designed to provide participants with strategies for planning, implementing and monitoring learning experiences for students studying mathematics in secondary schools. The unit will build on both national and state documents relating to mathematical curricula. There is a focus on junior secondary mathematics with special attention given to understanding in mathematics, lesson planning, the use of concrete materials (for example, in algebra), problem solving, technology and strategies for fostering mathematical thinking in students. The unit proceeds to develop strategies for assessing learning experiences for students studying mathematics at all levels of secondary schools, including a focus on upper secondary. Special attention will be given to theories of learning, unit planning, assessment, technology, problem solving, mathematical investigations, mathematical modelling and optional areas in the syllabus.

EDMA423 Mathematics Teaching and Learning 1                                                                                10 cp

This unit is designed to provide participants with strategies for planning, implementing and monitoring learning experiences for students studying mathematics in schools. The unit will build on documents relating to mathematical curricula. There is a focus on primary and junior secondary mathematics with special attention given to understanding in mathematics and the critical role of language in developing this understanding. The development of mathematical understanding will be explored through the use of concrete materials (for example, in early algebraic understanding), problem solving, leaning technologies, and strategies for fostering mathematical thinking in students. The unit proceeds to develop strategies for assessing learning experiences for students studying mathematics. Special attention will be given to catering for individual differences.

EDMA424 Mathematics Teaching and Learning 2                                                                                      10 cp

This unit is designed to provide participants with strategies for planning, implementing and monitoring learning experiences for students studying mathematics in the secondary school. Assessment of learning, both formative and summative, and the importance of language use in learning will be underlying themes. The unit will build on documents relating to mathematical curricula. There is a focus on the use of information and communication technologies with particular attention to the use of Spreadsheets, Geometric Software and Compute Algebra Systems. The unit proceeds to explore strategies for developing mathematical application in real world problems. Special attention will be given to theories of learning, mathematical modelling and optional areas in the syllabus.
