EDLO300 Italian Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                                                       10 cp

 

This unit gives students a broad theoretical introduction to second language acquisition and current theories related to L2 teaching methodology. It analyses issues pertinent to LOTE course development.

 

EDLO301 Italian Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                                                       10 cp

 

This unit enables students to develop an understanding and awareness of LOTE methodology with specific reference to Italian, and assists students to develop a variety of approaches and methods in teaching Italian.

 

EDLO302 LOTE Education 1                                                                                                                 10 cp

 

The aim of this unit is to develop in students a sound knowledge of current developments and issues in second-language learning and a thorough insight into the methods of LOTE (Languages other than English) teaching, including a variety of approaches in course planning.

 

EDLO303 LOTE Education 2                                                                                                                 10 cp

 

In this unit students study approaches to planning and assessment in second language learning and examine the relationship between LOTE and the school curriculum.

 

EDLO400 Italian Curriculum and Teaching 3                                                                                       10 cp

 

The unit consolidates classroom practices and techniques in teaching Italian as a second language, taking into account course requirements and expectations as specified by the NSW Board of Studies.

 

EDLO401 Current Issues in LOTE                                                                                                          10 cp

 

This unit exposes a student to the nature, application and implications of some of the important issues regarding LOTE, with particular reference to primary and post-primary schools in Australia. Attention is given to the educational, sociological, psychological and political aspects of the development of LOTE programs and understanding of LOTE importance and role within the Australian educational context.

 

EDLO409 LOTE Curriculum and Teaching 1                                                                                       10 cp

 

This unit is designed to promote close examination of language acquisition research findings, of first and second-language learning theories, and of the principles of optimal classroom learning and teaching. Students will become familiar with current national, state and system policies regarding LOTE education, and will study theories, past and present, of language acquisition and LOTE teaching methodology appropriate to the different stages of schooling and for the macro language skills. Students will explore the notions of associations, mind mapping, topic, language functions.

 

EDLO 410 LOTE Curriculum and Teaching 3                                                                                        10 cp

 

This unit is designed to promote a more in-depth examination of many aspects of the processes of learning and teaching a second language beginning with the role of language and literacy in both first and second languages. Prospective LOTE educators will become familiar with how to foster a positive second language learning environment in the classroom by studying research results on the main factors affecting second language acquisition and the characteristics of good second language learners. The main elements of lesson planning and lesson delivery will include the discussion of research studies on second language students’ modes of learning and on the use of the target language by second language teachers during class time.

 

EDLO411 LOTE Curriculum and Teaching 2                                                                                         10 cp

 

This unit is designed to introduce students to the principles of communicative language learning and the implications for the planning and implementation of effective LOTE programs. Teaching strategies relating to genres, mixed ability classes and learning styles will be examined, together with assessment and reporting issues.

 

EDLO412 LOTE Curriculum and Teaching 4                                                                                         10 cp

 

This unit will encourage students to examine closely the difference between immersion and classroom instructed second language acquisition and its practical implications, particularly as they relate to the fostering of the communicative approach in the teaching of the main language skills. Students will learn how to enhance learners’ strengths and how to help their weaknesses in their first language through the acquisition process of another language. Students will expand their knowledge of how to best cater for different learning styles in the classroom, and they will be offered the opportunity to develop teaching materials based on best teaching practices, including the use of ICT technology, which are particularly suitable for assessment purposes. Students will be come familiar with the basic principles of how to set up and organize classroom-based research involving young second language learners.

This unit is designed to promote close examination of language acquisition research findings, of first and second language learning theories, and of the principles of optimal classroom learning and teaching. Prospective LOTE educators will become familiar with current national, state and system policies regarding LOTE education, and will study theories, past and present, of language acquisition and LOTE teaching methodology appropriate to the different stages of schooling and for the macro language skills. Students will be introduced to the principles of communicative language learning and the implications for the planning and implementation of effective LOTE programs. Teaching strategies relating to genres, mixed ability classes, learning styles, the use of best available resources including electronic ones will be examined, together with assessment and reporting issues.

This unit is designed to promote a more in-depth examination of many aspects of the processes of learning and teaching a second language that constitute the content of the unit EDLO407 LOTE Method A, beginning with the principles and results of research into second language learning and teaching. Prospective LOTE educators will become familiar with how to foster a positive second language-learning environment in the classroom by studying research results on the main factors affecting second language acquisition.
