EDAB105 Indigenous Lifestyles Past and Present                                                                                10 cp

 

The aim of this unit is to explore the main elements of Indigenous cultures past and present. The main emphasis will be on cultural diversity and dynamic cultural change. In linking the past to the present, aspects of traditional culture expressed in modern cultural forms will be examined. Areas to be explored include kinship systems and social structures, traditional roles of men, women and children, religion and spirituality, the dreaming and the law, relationship with the sea and land, caring for the environment, economic life, and the inter-relation of the arts in everyday life.

 

EDAB106 Post-Contact Indigenous History                                                                                           10 cp

 

This unit explores changes in Indigenous societies from 1788 to the 1960s. The impact of European contact and colonisation will be focused upon utilising both written and oral sources. The effects of invasion, dispossession and government policies on the lives of Indigenous people during this period will be examined. This unit also concentrates on the study of Indigenous family history, the history of local resistance, the rise of Indigenous community organisations and political activism.

 

EDAB107 Contemporary Issues in Indigenous History                                                                          10 cp

 

The aim of this unit is to research a broad range of Indigenous contemporary issues relating to the political, social and legal aspects of Indigenous communities. Included will be land rights, Mabo, native title, Wik and reconciliation. There will be a focus also upon health, housing, education, deaths in custody and government structures which affect Indigenous people.

 

EDAB111 Indigenous Cultures and Peoples                                                                                         10 cp

 

This unit is designed to offer students a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories and the role of Indigenous studies within the Australian educational context. The unit will focus on the diversity of Indigenous Australia with particular emphasis on the cultures and history of the region in which it is being taught. The development and implementation of the unit will involve Indigenous community members and make reference to relevant local resources. Major themes will include: Contemporary Cultures and Issues; the Contributions of Indigenous People in the Making of Australia; Traditional Cultures and Histories and Contemporary Indigenous perspectives in Education.

 

EDAB112 Tertiary Communication Skills                                                                                              10 cp

 

The purpose of this unit is to assist students in their transition to tertiary study. As part of tertiary studies students are required to learn different ways of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The move from primary to secondary school, and then to the work force or tertiary study, involves developing new language skills. This unit will give students an opportunity to identify and practise language skills appropriate for tertiary study.

 

EDAB300 Australian History in an Indigenous Context                                                                         10 cp

 

This unit will provide a wider historical context for some of the other indigenous studies units by dealing with important trends in Australian history since 1788. It will focus on the impact of these trends on Indigenous communities and the contribution Indigenous people have made to Australian society and culture. The periods studied will encompass the land wars, Federation, the pastoral industry, the two World Wars, the White Australia Policy and the development of policies of cultural diversity.

 

EDAB302 Indigenous Studies Curriculum 1                                                                                          10 cp

 

This unit is designed for students to further develop a critical awareness of the range of teaching approaches, resources and procedures associated with teaching Indigenous studies in the secondary school. The unit will build upon the NSW Years 7-10 Aboriginal Studies Syllabus and support documents in assisting students to develop a broad range of strategies utilising a variety of resources.

 

EDAB400 Indigenous Studies Curriculum 2                                                                                          10 cp

 

This unit is designed for students to develop a critical awareness of the range of teaching approaches, resources and procedures associated with teaching Indigenous Studies in the secondary school. The unit will build upon the two unit Aboriginal Studies Syllabus and the preliminary and HSC support documents in assisting students to develop a broad range of strategies utilising a variety of resources. Specific emphasis will be on critically examining new syllabus documents at the HSC level.
