The material covered in this unit will be applied in the final field experience placement.

This unit will provide an opportunity for students to realise the practical implications of information communication technology (ICT) for education and schooling. Students will examine ICT as a context, stimulus, source of information and tool for learning. Students will create cross-curricular teaching and learning resources to meet learning outcomes using a range of technologies. They will use technologies for the management of computer-based resources in the classroom. Students will use internet tools for communication, information and for publishing.

This unit will develop students’ understanding of teaching science and technology in the primary school. This will include development of the students’ own knowledge and skills in science and technology, as well as the skills needed to plan learning experiences for children.

The unit will introduce the fundamental skills of teaching while also raising students’ awareness of the social influences that accompany the teacher’s role. The unit will introduce the student to the multifaceted nature of teaching, incorporating issues of social justice, equity and empowerment in relation to teaching. Particular focus is placed on classroom communication skills, lesson planning, teacher questioning and responding, initial classroom management techniques, and the fostering of an effective learning environment.

Specific topics will include an introduction to curriculum processes, assessment principles assessment techniques, and the professional responsibilities of teachers in schools. As this unit will be linked to field experience, strong connections will be established between the theory and classroom practices in school and community settings.
EBTS102 Teaching and Classroom Management 1 10 cp
The unit is designed to introduce the fundamental skills of teaching while at the same time raising students’ awareness of the social influences affecting the teacher’s role. This unit also introduces the student to the multifaceted nature of teaching, incorporating social justice, equity and empowerment issues related to teaching. With regard to foundation skills, particular focus is on classroom communication skills, lesson planning, teacher questioning and responding, initial classroom management techniques, and the fostering of an effective learning environment. As this unit incorporates field experience, strong links are established between the theoretical components and classroom practices in school and community settings.
EBTS103 Curriculum Implementation 10 cp
This unit focuses on the identification and analysis of key factors and issues involved in the implementation of curriculum change and innovation. Emphasis is placed upon developing understandings that may in turn affect curriculum implementation practice in participants’ work settings.

It is an ongoing challenge for schools to meet the educational needs of every student given the range of cultures in schools and a move towards a greater inclusion of students with disabilities, learning difficulties and/or challenging behaviours in regular classrooms. This move reflects a human rights and social justice perspective that all children have an equal educational opportunity within the regular classroom. An inclusive school takes a non-categorical approach to students and is evaluated by the degree to which each and every student in the school is provided for an is successfully achieving. This unit will develop students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in creating inclusive classrooms and schools to effectively meet the educational needs of all students, particularly those with special needs.
EBTS201 Teaching and Classroom Management 3 10 cp
This unit will focus on extending the student teacher’s professional responsibilities in program development and curriculum processes. The unit will assist students to develop an informed concept of curriculum theory and implementation, particularly in the context of a school community that values Gospel ideals. Program development and evaluation, student assessment and teacher self reflection, together with contemporary curriculum issues such as outcome-based curriculum planning, student profiling and reporting using performance standards, will be examined.
EBTS300 Teaching and Classroom Management 4 10 cp
This unit will develop and extend basic teaching and learning skills. The unit will assist students to identify learning styles and apply various strategies to cater for various learning styles and contexts. The unit will offer opportunities to develop teaching and management skills; to plan, prepare and implement lessons; to develop a variety of professional interpersonal skills; to identify appropriate assessment techniques and critically reflect on experiences.
