TECO300 to TECO307

TECO300 Food Technology 2                                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisite TECO103 Food Technology 1

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures, 2 laboratory hours and a 1-hour tutorial per week.

Further develops students’ understanding of the Australian Food Industry, food manufacture, and food product development. Students will examine a range of issues, including the Australian Food Industry, food manufacture and innovations, and an overview of current trends in product development.

TECO301 Engineering Foundations 1                                                                                                   10 cp

Prerequisite TECO204 Manufacturing Processes

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures and 3 laboratory/tutorial hours per week.

An introduction to concepts in material science and mechanical systems that develops knowledge and skills in engineering technology. Both the practical and theoretical skills in the analysis of materials and mechanical systems will be ongoing themes of the unit. The content of the unit will provide students with an understanding of the material science and mechanical systems in analysing and solving engineering-based problems, with specific reference to current trends and research in engineering technology. Concurrently, the unit will introduce students to the potential of integrating problem-solving skills with the theoretical knowledge covered.

TECO302 Electronic Systems                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisite TECO204 Manufacturing Processes

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures and 3 laboratory/tutorial hours per week.

An introduction to basic concepts of electronics, logic circuits, and control systems. Development of theoretical understanding and skills in electronic technology will be an ongoing theme of the unit. The content of the unit will provide an understanding of the fundamentals of electronics, logic circuits and control systems, and enable students to apply this knowledge to develop competence in the design and realisation of solutions to specific problems to meet various human needs.

TECO303 Engineering Foundations 2                                                                                                   10 cp

Prerequisite TECO301 Engineering Foundations 1

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures and 3 laboratory/tutorial hours per week.

Introduces and further develops knowledge and skills in material science and mechanical systems associated with engineering technology and previously taught in Engineering Technology 1. Both the practical and theoretical skills in the analysis of materials and mechanical systems will be ongoing themes of the unit. The content of the unit will provide students with an understanding of the material science and mechanical systems in analysing and solving engineering-based problems, with specific reference to current trends and research in specific areas of engineering technology. Concurrently, the unit will introduce students to the potential of integrating problem- solving skills with the theoretical knowledge covered.

TECO304 Applied Design and Technology                                                                                           10 cp

Prerequisite TECO204 Manufacturing Processes

Teaching Organisation 1-hour lecture and 4 laboratory hours per week.

Builds on knowledge and skills introduced in earlier units of the course sequence. The content of this unit will provide students with the opportunity to critically analyse and investigate the complexities of the relationship between design and technology on both a philosophical and practical level.

TECO305 Textile Technology 2                                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisite TECO104 Textile Technology 1

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures, 2 laboratory hours and a 1-hour tutorial per week.

Develops further understanding of textile fabric appearance and performance with a study of the development of dyeing and finishing of textiles from traditional manual techniques to technologically advanced techniques. Computerised systems used to manage production and retail are also examined.

TECO306 Managing Innovation                                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Three Advanced level units

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

This is a capstone unit that builds on the knowledge and skills introduced in earlier units by providing students with the techniques for developing a wide range of solutions to various design problems. Creative thinking techniques are explored together with an examination of the characteristics of the creative person. The innovation cycle is then examined in detail through selected industry case studies and design projects. Students also gain knowledge about the relationship between ethics, design and technology and the need to sustain environments.

TECO307 Design and Technology Internship                                                                                       10 cp

Prerequisites 3 Advanced level units

Teaching Organisation 12 days or equivalent.

In this unit students are required to complete an advanced practical technology project by working in an industrial environment with a professional person. The project theme must augment the student’s technology specialisation developed in earlier units and must be approved by both the University and the mentor before the commencement of the placement. This unit will provide students with an opportunity to further develop their technology skills as well as gaining further insight into and understanding of the link between design and industry.
