TECO101 Graphics for Design 1                                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites COMP102 Computer Applications

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

An introduction to basic concepts that develop knowledge and skills in the use of graphics as a design communication tool. It will provide students with an opportunity to explore and integrate a broad range of graphics techniques and media. The content of this unit will therefore examine basic concepts, including the importance of drawing standards, the interpretation of drawings, as well as traditional and computer- based drafting methods. The skills developed will be used to communicate concepts of possible design solutions to problems associated with various human needs.

TECO102 Materials Technology                                                                                                           10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

An introduction to a variety of materials that develop skills in their practical application. The content of this unit provides the opportunity for students to develop an understanding of the properties and applications of a variety of materials and to apply this knowledge to select materials in the construction of prototypes as solutions to specific problems which meet human needs.

TECO103 Food Technology 1                                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures, 2 laboratory hours and a 1-hour tutorial per week.

 

An introduction to food properties, food availability, production techniques and nutrition. Student understanding and skills development will be enhanced through scientific experiments and food preparation in addition to lectures and tutorials. The maintenance of a safe and hygienic work environment will be a major focus.

TECO104 Textile Technology 1                                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures, 2 laboratory hours and a 1-hour tutorial per week.

 

An introduction to fibre properties, yarn, and fabric manufacture in the context of textiles meeting human needs. The extensive use of textiles from domestic to industrial applications is made clear after studying the advances in fibre and fabric technology.

TECO105 Design Principles                                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit introduces the student to the design environment. Design as a means for developing ethical solutions to various human needs is emphasized. The distinction between design process and design methods is investigated. Students are also introduced to various design tools, including graphical communication, Computer Aided Drawing and Design (CADD), and model making. These tools are integrated through various practical design exercises.

TECO107 Design Issues in Timber                                                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit builds on the knowledge and skills introduced in Design Principles. It focuses on timber as one means for the production of design prototypes, through an investigation of the characteristics of timber as a design medium. The appropriate and safe use of hand and machine tools is emphasized. Theoretical concepts are supported by the integration of appropriate graphics and design exercises.

TECO108 Designing with Textiles                                                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit provides students with an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills related to textile design. Students investigate the properties and appropriate use of textiles, textile pattern production, machining, dyeing and printing techniques, the manufacture and marketing of textile items, as well as practical safety issues. The unit uses a problem-solving approach to learning and designing to satisfy specific design briefs.

TECO203 Design Processes                                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites TECO101 Graphics for Design 1

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures and 3 laboratory hours per week.

 

Builds on previous units and provides a foundation for all units which follow. It introduces basic concepts and develops knowledge and skills in solving problems using a design process. The content of this unit provides students with a broad understanding of the strategies utilised by designers in the development of critical solutions to problems associated with various human needs.

TECO204 Manufacturing Processes                                                                                                      10 cp

Prerequisites TECO102 Materials Technology

Teaching Organisation 2 hours of lectures and 3 tutorial/laboratory hours per week.

 

An introduction to basic manufacturing concepts that develop a broad knowledge of the various processes used in manufacturing products. The content of the unit will develop awareness of the evolution of contemporary manufacturing processes from traditional methods and provide students with an understanding of how manufacturing processes are applied and managed to produce articles designed and manufactured to meet human needs.

TECO205 Graphics for Design 2                                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites TECO101 Graphics for Design 1

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Develops knowledge, understanding and skills in the use of advanced graphics techniques and media which can assist the designer in the development of critical solutions to problems associated with various human needs. The content of this unit deals with the concepts of solid geometry, and detail and assembly drawing. Students will also be introduced to an advanced computer-aided drafting package and use it to prepare production drawings, model and render objects, prepare and execute computer numeric control programs.

TECO206 Design Issues in Metal                                                                                                          10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit builds on the knowledge and skills introduced in Design Principles. It focuses on metal as one means for the production of design prototypes, through an investigation of the characteristics of metal as a design medium. The appropriate and safe use of hand and machine tools is emphasized. Theoretical concepts are supported by the integration of appropriate graphics and design exercises.

TECO207 Food Management                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit develops skills and knowledge related to food preparation, presentation, nutrition, food laboratory management and safety issues. The major focus of the unit is on situations where food and related issues are used in problem solving and designing to satisfy specific design briefs.

TECO208 Design and Manufacturing                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites TECO107 Design Issues in Timber, TECO206 Design Issues in Metal

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit builds on knowledge and skills introduced in earlier units. It examines the means by which solutions to various design problems can be transferred from concept to reality. The nature of modern manufacturing processes and technologies is examined with particular reference to the organisation of labour, the structure and management of manufacturing enterprises, and the selection and integration of appropriate production technologies. Studies of theoretical concepts are supported by investigations of industrial organisations as well as by the execution of practical design projects.

TECO209 Textile Industries                                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites TECO108 Designing with Textiles

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit investigates issues related to the Australian textile clothing and footwear industries including the study of designers, influences on their designs and the impact of their designs on others. An important part of the unit is an investigation of the development of the Australian textile industry. The effects of government legislation and intervention and support programs are explored. Roles within the industries and selected manufacturing processes are studied. The study of theoretical concepts will be supported by case studies and industry visits.

TECO210 Food and Nutrition                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisite TECO207 Food Management

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit covers nutrition and food product development, current trends, packaging, presentation, marketing and legislation related to food in the marketplace. The content of this unit provides the opportunity for students to develop an understanding of the processes of food product development and to apply this knowledge to meet specific needs.

TECO211 Control Systems                                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisite SCIO102 Science for Technologists

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit complements the unit Design and Manufacturing by extending the knowledge and skills associated with advanced manufacturing systems. Following a general introduction to elementary electronics and the basic concepts of control system technology, it will focus on a detailed examination of industrial robotics and mechatronics. Studies of theoretical concepts are supported by the execution of practical robotic design projects.

TECO212 Textile Innovations                                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisite SCIO102 Science for Technologists

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

In this unit students will undertake an advanced study of the issues impacting on the contemporary Australian textile industry. In particular the roles of research and development and innovation in the textiles, clothing and footwear industries are examined. Developments in the properties and performance of modern textile materials will be critically analysed and factors in establishing Australian textile market niches will be investigated. Theoretical concepts will be supported by the execution of a major textiles project.

TECO213 Food Industries                                                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisite TECO207 Food Management

Teaching Organisation 5 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit examines the various sectors of the Australian food industries. The impact of government policies on food processing and products is studied. Contemporary issues that are related to food in the market place are explored. An essential part of the unit will be case studies and visits to industry to allow students to investigate technological developments and computer systems in use in the food industry.
