SWTP200 Honours Research Seminar                                                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites SWTP103 Social Work Field Placement 1

Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and self-directed packages may be utilized to introduce and explore the writing of an honours proposal.

 

This unit provides the opportunity for students to explore developing a proposal for their honours thesis. It would deal with issues of time management, writing a thesis, methodological possibilities, deciding how to decide, ethical considerations, supervisor student relationship.

SWTP201 Public Policy for Social Workers                                                                                         10 cp

Prerequisites SWTP101 Introduction to Social Work, SWTP103 Social Work Field Placement 1

Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, WebCT and self-directed packages may be utilised.

 

The unit will explore and analyse the policy dimension of social work practice in the Australian context and will help students develop an appreciation of the policy skills necessary for social work practice. It will use social policy frameworks to explain the development and implementation of policy in government and non-government spheres and will introduce specific areas of policy and ‘real world’ implications and constraints. The unit also provides students with hands-on experience to develop policy skills.

Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, WebCT and self-directed packages may be utilised.

 

The purpose of this unit is to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of the research process and an understanding of research as a core component of social work practice. Students will engage in an experiential learning environment that allows them to develop skills in research processes utilising both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The unit provides students with the opportunity for practical application of research concepts. Throughout the semester, the consideration of ethical research will be maintained. The purpose and value of research in Social Work practice will be addressed particularly considering evidence based practice and evaluating practice.

Teaching Organisation Seminars and field practice.

 

This unit builds on the objectives and outcomes of the first year Field Practicum. The practicum aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills derived from all components of the curriculum, to develop new knowledge, and to demonstrate their ability to work effectively in the field setting of their placement. Emphasis is on the student applying theories of intervention within a social work practice framework and deriving practice wisdom from the practicum experience.

Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and self-directed packages may be utilised.

 

This unit is designed to develop students’ understanding of the organisational contexts in which their professional practice will take place. As well as exploring broad approaches to organisational theory, students will begin to develop and practice their skills in organisational analysis. This unit will also provide a preparation for ‘reading’ the organisational contexts in which students undertake their field education placements. It will assist students to understand the dynamics of today's changing organisations and what these changes mean for social workers. Within an organisational change perspective it considers teamwork, leadership, supervision, management issues, and the role of social workers in today’s organisations. It develops students understanding of their operational styles and how they can be part of the changing organisational context of social work practice. The role of information technology in structuring contemporary social service work is a central focus.

SWTP205 Social Work Practice with Communities                                                                              10 cp

Prerequisites SWTP103 Social Work Field Placement 1

Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and self-directed packages may be utilized to introduce and explore theory and practice of social work. The Social Work Practice with Communities module involves specifically a Community Participation Group Project.

 

This unit is designed to enable the student to understand the role of social workers in working with communities. It will explore approaches to working with communities as a form of social work practice. The unit will introduce social work students to the practice of community development work through an examination of both the theoretical underpinnings of this practice method and the skills required to work effectively as a social worker. The focus is on understanding and applying selected theories of intervention in community settings. The unit will enable students to understand community development work from a variety of perspectives both within Australia and in global contexts. It will emphasise the need for analysis and action to be grounded within the purpose of social work and will include a real-life community project component.

SWTP206 Social Work Elective 2                                                                                                         10 cp

Prerequisites SWTP201 Public Policy for Social Workers

Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and self-directed packages may be utilised to introduce and explore the social work elective.

 

This unit provides the opportunity for students to explore social work practice in particular contexts such as specific areas of practice (statutory social work; income support), practice with specific groups (families, children, aged, women, youth, disabled, etc) and practice with specific problem areas (substance abuse, homeless, etcetera) and practice with specific issues (grief and loss). Students’ will chose one elective from an available range. The range of electives will be selected from the following list and offered on the availability of staff expertise.

SWTP 207 Social Work Practice with Groups and Families                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites SWTP107 Social Work Practice with Individuals

Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and self-directed packages may be utilised to introduce and explore the social work elective.

 

This unit will provide students with the opportunity to analyse advanced practice and from several perspectives. This unit is designed to extend the notion of social work as a generalist practice by focussing upon developing skills and knowledge for working with groups and families. Students will advance their knowledge of intervention theories with groups; their understanding of group theory, group processes and group dynamics and roles; and skills in group leadership. The unit will develop students’ knowledge and skills in designing and running groups. With families as a specific focus of this unit, students will be introduced to family mediation; strengths based family work and narrative work with families. Students will develop a personal practice model and choose particular perspectives and/or theories of intervention to explore and implement.
