MUSC405/630 Introduction to Musicology                                                                                             10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Bachelor of Music (Hons), Graduate Diploma in Music (Performance or Composition) or Master of Music

 

A generic study of musicology, including a survey of historical and analytical method, archival research, organology, iconography, aesthetics, criticism, ethnomusicology and gender studies, together with a study of bibliography and historiography.

MUSC407 Advanced Choral Direction A                                                                                               20 cp

Prerequisites A grade of Distinction or above in MUSC326 Choral Conducting 3B and MUSC325 Choral Training Practicum B, or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Weekly individual tuition and rehearsal supervision of 60 minutes (or equivalent) over one semester.

 

An advanced study of the art and techniques of choral rehearsal and direction, including the direction of an approved choir or choirs throughout the semester, leading to the presentation of a public choral performance. Preparation and presentation of a public choral concert with an approved choir(s) of 40 minutes playing time, comprising works of varied styles and of suitable technical difficulty.

MUSC418 Advanced Practical Study: Vocal A                                                                                      20 cp

Prerequisites A grade of Distinction or above in MUSC329 Practical Study 3B; Vocal, or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Weekly individual lesson of 60 minutes, weekly performance class of 2 hours over one semester.

 

An advanced study in vocal performance, including public solo and ensemble performance. Preparation and presentation of a public recital of 40 minutes playing time, comprising works of varied styles and of suitable technical difficulty, including 20 minutes of ensemble performance of works such as vocal duets, trios, quartets or vocal works with instrumental obbligato.

MUSC419/610 Advanced Studies in Musicology A                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Bachelor of Music (Hons), Graduate Diploma of Music (Performance or Composition) or Master of Music

 

A study of up to two selected topics chosen from the following discipline areas in historical and systematic musicology: aesthetics of music, music criticism and music analysis. Topics to be investigated will be negotiated according to staff availability and student demand, and will be chosen from the following broad areas: (i) a study of selected writings of the philosophy of music from antiquity to the present day, (ii) a study of selected theoretical and historical writings on music criticism and critical writings on music, including journalistic criticism, (iii) a study of selected approaches to analysis applied to a variety of musical styles, using analytical techniques such as structural, functional, formal, thematic, stylistic, semiotic, paradigmatic approaches, and set theory.

MUSC420 Music Composition A                                                                                                            20 cp

Prerequisites A grade of Distinction or above in MUSC324 Music Language Studies 6, or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Weekly supervision of 60 minutes over one semester and performance workshops, as required.

 

An advanced study of compositional techniques, including the preparation and presentation of a folio of at least two original compositions for differing musical forces totalling 15-20 minutes (vocal, choral, instrumental or computer generated) and a presentation at a performance workshop of one of the works. The compositions should be written in different genres, scoring and idioms and should take account of the performing forces available to the composer and feedback provided by performers in workshops. Compositions involving synthetically produced sound, for example film soundtracks and incidental music for drama, may be included.

Prerequisites MUSC420 Music Composition A

Teaching Organisation Weekly supervision of 60 minutes over one semester and performance workshops, as required.

 

A continuing advanced study of compositional techniques, including the preparation and presentation of a folio of two original compositions for varied small and large musical forces totalling 15-20 minutes (vocal, choral, instrumental or computer generated) different from those represented in MUSC420 Music Composition A and a public performance of a selection of the works. The compositions should be written styles, genres and scoring different from that represented in MUS420 Music Composition A and should take account of the performing forces available to the composer and feedback provided by performers in workshops. Prerequisites MUSC407 Advanced Choral Direction A

Teaching Organisation Weekly individual tuition and rehearsal supervision of 60 minutes (or equivalent) over one semester.

 

A continuing advanced study of the art and techniques of choral rehearsal and direction, including the direction of an approved choir or choirs throughout the semester, leading to the presentation of a public choral performance of repertoire different from that studied in MUSC407 Advanced Choral Direction A. Preparation and presentation of a choral public concert with an approved choir(s)of 40 minutes playing time, comprising repertoire different from that studied in MUSC407 Advanced Choral Direction A, representing varied styles and of suitable technical difficulty.

MUSC430 Advanced Practical Study: Vocal B                                                                                      20 cp

Prerequisites MUSC418 Advanced Practical Study: Vocal A, or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Weekly individual lesson of 60 minutes, weekly performance class of 2 hours over one semester.

 

Description A continuing advanced study in vocal performance, including public solo performance in repertoire different from that studied in MUSC418 Advanced Practical Study: Vocal A. Preparation and presentation of a solo public recital of 40 minutes playing time, comprising repertoire different from that studied in MUSC418 Advanced Practical Study: Vocal A representing varied styles and of suitable technical difficulty.

MUSC431 Advanced Practical Study: Instrumental A                                                                           20 cp

Prerequisites A grade of Distinction or above in MUSC327 Practical Study 3B: Harpsichord or MUSC330 Practical Study 3B: Organ, or MUSC328 Practical Study 3B: Piano, or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Weekly individual lesson of 60 minutes, weekly performance class of 2 hours over one semester.

 

An advanced study in instrumental performance, including public solo and ensemble performance. Preparation and presentation of a public recital of 40 minutes playing time, comprising works of varied styles and of suitable technical difficulty, and including 20 minutes of ensemble performance of a work such as a concerto, an instrumental chamber work including the piano, or accompaniment of a singer, group of singers or choir.

Prerequisites MUSC431 Advanced Practical Study: Instrumental A

Teaching Organisation Weekly individual lesson of one hour, over one semester and Performance Practice Class.

 

A continuing advanced study in instrumental performance, including public solo performance of repertoire different from that studied in MUSC415 Advanced Practical Study: Instrumental A. Preparation and presentation of a solo public recital of 40 minutes playing time, comprising repertoire different from that studied in MUSC415 Advanced Practical Study: Instrumental A representing varied styles and of suitable technical difficulty.

MUSC435/629 Advanced Studies in Musicology B                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Bachelor of Music (Hons), Graduate Diploma of Music (Performance or Composition) or Master of Music

 

A study of selected topics chosen from the following discipline areas in historical and systematic musicology: notation of music before 1600, performance practice, and textual criticism and music editing. Topics to be investigated will be negotiated according to staff availability and student demand, and will be chosen from the following broad areas: (i) a study of selected forms of notation in polyphonic Western music up to c. 1600, including transcription exercises from original notation to produce modern editions, (ii) an investigation of selected problems in the performance of music from the Middles Ages to the present, including rhythm, pitch, style, ornamentation and performance mediums and techniques, (iii) a study of textual criticism and principles of music editing, based on selected manuscript and printed sources of music, and including exercises in producing modern editions from original sources.

MUSC436/631 Special Study in Music                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Bachelor of Music (Hons), Graduate Diploma of Music (Performance or Composition) or Master of Music

 

An introduction to independent research and report writing, involving the preparation of a project based on original research. Under the supervision of an appointed supervisor, the preparation and presentation of a research report of 4,000-6,000 words or lecture demonstration of 40 minutes duration, showing that the student has undertaken independent research.
