Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

An exploration of the development and structures of twentieth–century popular music, including a survey of styles and forms, a survey of performance techniques and structures, arranging/composition techniques, improvisation, arranging and composing, ensemble and solo instrumental, and vocal performance.

A broad overview of particular church music traditions including the forces that have shaped them, their styles, forms and genres, and their specific repertoire.

Teaching Organisation Three contact hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

A further study of musicianship, and specifically of skills in arranging and composing music to meet worship needs.

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

A study of the aesthetics of music, with particular reference to the realm of the sacred. Students will examine the ways in which music can communicate meaning, either alone, or in association with other forms of art. Aspects to be studied will include: value judgements in music, music and emotion, music and the experience of God, music and beauty, music and ritual.

Teaching Organisation Lectures, seminars and workshops comprising 3 hours per week over two semesters or equivalent

 

A study of the history, sources, notation, and forms of Western plainchant, as a theoretical background for an informed method of chant performance. A critical approach to chant editions will be developed by examining the restoration of chant since the late nineteenth century, the various schools of performance, and the controversies surrounding these.

Prerequisites Grade 4 Keyboard & Grade 3 Theory/Musicianship, AMEB, Trinity College (London) or equivalent

Teaching Organisation Individual keyboard instruction by an approved teacher for 30 minutes per week (either live or videotaped).

 

A basic study in keyboard skills and performance appropriate to the practice of music in worship. The unit may be undertaken using piano, pipe organ, or electronic equivalent. The repertoire may be chosen to reflect the student’s own denominational tradition.

A basic study in musicianship and performance skills appropriate to leading and accompanying a congregation, using voice and guitar. The repertoire may be chosen to reflect the student’s own denominational tradition.

Teaching Organisation Individual vocal instruction by an approved teacher for 30 minutes per week (either live or videotaped)

 

A basic study of vocal and musicianship skills appropriate to the role of cantor, including repertoire appropriate to the role of cantor in leading congregational singing, and basic sight-reading. The repertoire may be chosen to reflect the student’s own denominational tradition.

Prerequisites Music major/minor: Any 2 Music units at 100 level. Asian Studies major/minor: 1 Asian Studies unit at 100 level

Teaching Organisation 3 contact hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

A study of the music of selected Asian cultures and of the role of music and musicians within these cultures. The unit includes a study of varieties of instrumentation, rhythmic and melodic/harmonic structures and compositional forms, compositional techniques, and performance techniques.

Teaching Organisation 3 contact hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit presents a survey of music in Australia from the time of European settlement to the present.

Teaching Organisation Weekly rehearsals/workshops for at least 2 hours per week over 2 semesters, together with public performances in liturgies and at end-of-semester concerts, as prescribed at the start of each semester, including performances with orchestral or other instrumental accompaniment.

 

Continuing membership of and satisfactory participation in the activities of the Campus Choir over a period of two semesters. Activities include weekly rehearsals, membership of the organising committee, and at least one major performance each semester, as well as occasional liturgies or performance at University functions.
