MGMT626 Contemporary Management Issues                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit is designed to address in an eclectic fashion topics that bear on management roles in contemporary organisations. The nature of the unit is such that the inclusion of topics will vary over time. The issues included tend to be discrete rather than topics that form a self contained theoretical or disciplinary whole.

Project management has become increasingly important for success in today’s business environment. Project management is utilized by small and large companies in a variety of industries, for both internal deliverables as well as external or customer deliverables. In some industries, each customer deliverable is a project. Projects may be as large as the construction of a Petrochemicals plant, or as small as the installation/repair of a domestic water heating system. It is therefore very useful for students of business management to be familiar with the applications, benefits and techniques of project management.

The focus of this unit is on the theories, principles and characteristics of public sector management with comparisons being made of the traditional model of public administration. The subject will link theoretical and conceptual issues with practical examples drawn from mainly Australian contemporary cases. Issues of change in the structure and processes of the public sector will be considered within the context of the transition from the traditional Westminster model of public administration to the more eclectic contemporary model of public sector management.

This unit takes as its theme the holistic appreciation of the multi-faceted nature of small business. The aim is to provide a substantial overview of the multi-tasking requirements of any small business owner, in the context of a very competitive environment. Traditional and non-traditional business environments are discussed in examining the nature of entrepreneurship, enterprise formation including planning, finance, legal, people, location, resource, and marketing issues.

MGMT630 International Political Economy                                                                                          10 cp

This unit presents students with general theories and concepts of international political economy. It aims to introduce students to the complex relationships between economics and politics in international relations, acquaint them with important critical perspectives, and introduce them to major historical and contemporary issues in international political economy; and to augment their theoretical and diagnostic capacities. The major schools of thought to be examined include Realism, Liberalism and Globalism, with particular emphasis given to topics such as war and peace, human rights and the global economy.

This unit is concerned with the nature and significance of issues arising from the relationship between employees, managers and employers. The central purpose of the unit will be to make the student aware of problems which can potentially reduce organisational effectiveness and efficiency, but which, if properly handled, can also lead to practices which will enhance productivity and employer-employee satisfaction.

This unit aims to stimulate an interdisciplinary exploration of the spirituality involved in organisations in the private and public sectors. Questions of the values informing personal creativity, professional responsibilities, social concern and religious commitment will be considered.

Issues of governance and ethical dealings by organisational management are seen by those who interact with them as being of critical importance to their ongoing relationship with an organisation. This unit provides a foundation for subsequent further studies in management, as the ethical stance taken and the governance system adopted have significant impact on organisational relationships and all decisions taken. This unit is designed to help you to develop the skills and attitudes to enable you understand the importance of responsible organisational management. It combines knowledge and approaches from business, philosophy and theology in a form that can be used by managers in any organisational setting.

The focus of this unit is on the management of people in work organisations within the context of the employer-employee relationship. The utilisation of people in achieving the strategic objectives of an organisation is fundamental to the success of the enterprise. The content covers critical models and functions in selected areas of human resource management including strategic HR planning, recruitment and selection of employees, training and development, performance management, remuneration and benefits, employment relations, and assessing the effectiveness of HRM. Various legislative requirements will be integrated into each topic area. The major functions and purposes of the HR function are examined against the historical development of HR in Australia and international trends.

This unit is an introduction to managing information as a resource for an organisation. It will provide an overview of information systems in organisations, managing information, the role of managers in the organisation in relation to information management and establishing organisational information requirements.

Information and skills required to solve real problems in the world of management responsibility are so diverse and changing so rapidly that it is impossible within the confines of any single course to provide students with all the knowledge and discipline skills that they will need to solve organisational problems. Yet problem-solving and decision-making are at the centre of management work. This unit is designed to help students develop the skills and attitudes necessary to build confidence in solving problems. To provide students with the skills necessary to solve “real” as opposed to “perceived” problems, they need to be provided with an experience in which they can explore and develop their own thinking and problem-solving skills. By so doing they will learn how to think for themselves, analyse problems, gather relevant information, generate solution hypotheses, make informed judgments on the basis of these hypotheses, consider the information available and the ethical values involved, and communicate the conclusions effectively.

The aim of this unit is to provide an understanding of the new and emerging field of knowledge management. It employs a broad spectrum of techniques and instruments to improve the performance of knowledge operations and the learning capabilities of a system. Knowledge management focuses on knowledge as a crucial production factor and consists of activities that aim at optimal use and development of knowledge. Knowledge management determines which knowledge, where, in which form and at which point of time, should be available within an organisation.

MGMT638 Leadership in Organisations                                                                                                10 cp

In modern work organisations leadership is a significant challenge that requires leaders to identify their own basic values and assumptions as part of the process of engagement with other organisational members. Leaders need to be challenged to reflect upon leadership and management theories, strategies and practices and be able to analyse them from a number of perspectives to identify their relevance to managing functions and organisations. Within the context of a rapidly changing organisational environment, different ways of helping managers and leaders to manage the dynamics of change will be identified and analysed. Emphasis will be placed on developing ethical and moral frameworks within the context of the Mission of the University for leaders who aim to be credible to their constituents while integrating changes into a clear vision of the future.

Prerequisite MGMT617 Research Methods

Teaching Organisation Each student is under the supervision of a member of the University staff, who will guide him or her in the research and writing up of the research thesis.

 

The Research Thesis involves independent study under supervision. The Research Thesis is expected to be a substantial piece of research in which a student must demonstrate an ability to conduct an independent research study, making appropriate theoretical connections, and adding to an existing body of knowledge. Each candidate is under the supervision of a member of University staff. Permission must be sought through the Head of School to undertake a Research Thesis.

This unit provides the conceptual frameworks and skills required by management for effective strategic planning and decision-making. Emphasis is placed on the importance of strategic planning in successfully determining the direction of an organisation’s future in a continuously changing environment. Strategic management includes the formulation and implementation of, as well as the process of control and review of, strategic direction. The unit takes the perspective of the corporations (business, public, not-for-profit, and voluntary organisations) as well as from the perspective of the business unit. The unit provides a strong managerial application and use approach throughout, focussing content toward a distinctly real-world, global orientation.

MGMT641 Organisational Dynamics and Change Management                                                           10 cp

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit provides an overview of organisational dynamics and change management. Its purpose is to offer a theoretical and strategically focused understanding of organisational dynamics incorporating dynamic processes such as decision making, power and politics, organisational communication and conflict management and the implications these have for change management. These concepts are examined incorporating organisational theory and behaviour. Participants are encouraged to take a strategic approach to the management of organisational change using contemporary organisational change theories and practices and determine the links between organisational dynamics and change management.
