JAPN100 Japanese 1                                                                                                                            10 cp

This unit is for students with little or no previous language studies in Japanese. It is a foundational course in which basic reading, writing, conversational and aural/oral skills will be introduced and developed. Important cultural social and historical dimensions of the Japanese language will be introduced as a background to the language studies.

Structural and functional approaches to Japanese Language Studies are used in this course. New target structures and vocabulary are introduced in lecture sessions and are enhanced and reinforced by pattern practice, drills, and exercises using the new language.

The aim of this course is to extend and develop rudimentary language learned in the first unit, and to build upon language of those students who have already achieved some proficiency in Japanese. It is designed to build upon the basic functional language while encouraging personal initiative and flexibility in using the target language. Important cultural, social and historical background influences upon the language will also be a feature of the unit.

The unit includes script practice of reading and writing of the three syllabaries, audio visual presentations, and review of selected readings distributed by the lecturer. Sessions will be structured to allow for maximum student participation.

This intermediate level of Japanese aims to continue the process of acquisition of standard contemporary Japanese. This unit offers an intensive development of the grammar, speaking, reading, and writing of the Japanese language, and allows for conversational skills to be extended and reinforced through oral/aural practice. Influential elements upon the language, and their significance, are looked at in greater depth.

This unit emphasises the expansion of the writing of Kanji; the reading of selected texts; increased understanding of the social, cultural and historical influences on the Japanese language; whole class and/or small group presentation of situation/topic; listening comprehension exercises and oral presentations. Audio-visual sessions will also be used.

Prerequisites At 100 level: JAPN102 Japanese 3. At 200 level: JAPN200 Japanese 3

This unit is a further development of Japanese language skills, both in the material studied and in the students’ personal ability. More specific complex elements and intricacies of the Japanese language are introduced, developed and explored.

This unit emphasises the expansion of the writing of kanji; the reading of selected texts; increased understanding of the social, cultural and historical influences of the Japanese language; whole class and/or small group presentation of situation/topic; listening comprehension exercises and oral presentations. Audio-visual sessions will also be used.

JAPN104 Japanese Language, Society and Business 1                                                                       10 cp

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorial discussions and workshops (2 hours language and 1 hour Business and Society).

 

This unit uses a communicative approach to language learning to introduce students to Japanese language patterns with which they can communicate at a basic level. The unit will give students the skills necessary to understand and use spoken Japanese at the beginners’ level, and to write Japanese using Romaji, an alphabetic script. The unit also covers important aspects of Japanese history, society, culture, and economy, with a focus on developing an understanding of the background that underlies the Japanese way of doing business.

Prerequisites JAPN104 Japanese Language, Society and Business 1

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorial discussions and workshops (2 hours language and 1 hour Business and Society).

 

This unit is a continuation and development of JAPN104. In addition to extending their mastery of Japanese language patterns and vocabulary, students will study the two scripts, hiragana and katakana. This unit will also focus on Japanese business culture, examining the nature of Japanese business, business practices, and significant elements of Japanese business language, etiquette and ethics.

This unit is designed for students at an intermediate level in Japanese, and aims to develop further skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition to using a textbook, students will be introduced to authentic unedited Japanese newspaper and magazine articles, prose fiction, songs, and videotaped material. As this is a third year unit, students will be encouraged to communicate in Japanese rather than in English, and staff will, as far as practicable, speak Japanese only in class.

This unit will focus on reading classical folktales which are part of Japanese culture, and which are familiar to generations up to and including the present. This will not only enhance reading skills but also introduce students to the foundations of Japanese culture.

Teaching Organisation Lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit develops students’ ability to read Japanese prose and encourages critical discussion of the issues raised in the material studied. Through seminar presentations students demonstrate their understanding of what they read and involve their peers in critical assessment of a contemporary Japanese non-fiction text, especially as it relates to Australia.

This unit develops students’ ability to read Japanese journalistic prose and to comprehend spoken Japanese in radio and television broadcasts.
