ITAL100 Italian N1                                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 2-hour lecture (contemporary Italian culture and literature) and 4 hours of tutorials dealing with basic grammatical structures and discourse patterns.

 

This unit is designed both for beginners and students with a limited knowledge of the language. Emphasis in the unit is placed on the study of basic structures of Italian lexico–grammar. For students who have completed Italian at Year 12 level it represents an excellent opportunity for revision and extension.

The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed through a communicative approach and the use of multi–media software. Salient aspects of Italian and Italo–Australian culture and contemporary literature are examined in some depth.

ITAL101 Italian N2                                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL100 Italian N1 or equivalent

Teaching Organisation 6 hours of lecture and workshop sessions. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed for both beginners and students with a limited knowledge of the language. Emphasis in this unit is placed on further study of basic structures of Italian lexico–grammar. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed further. Salient aspects of Italian contemporary literature are examined.

Prerequisites Year 12 Italian or equivalent

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Covers revision of the basic structures of Italian lexico–grammar. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed through a communicative approach, which includes the use of authentic texts drawn from the Italian media, regular conversation segments, and structured and unstructured practice.

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed to further improve and consolidate students’ functional usage and understanding of everyday Italian, and to achieve a deeper insight into their lexico–grammar and syntax, particularly in writing tasks. The cultural-literary component focuses on modern Italy and some 20th century authors.

ITAL203 Italian V3                                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL103 Italian V2 or equivalent

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed to further improve the study of fundamental aspects of lexico–grammar, in order to improve students’ level of communicative proficiency and language correctness in the four macro skills. The cultural-literary component includes the study of some contemporary authors.

Prerequisites ITAL203 Italian V3 or equivalent

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed to further students’ level of communicative ability, by providing continuing practice in all skills using authentic materials, and by introducing more complex lexico–grammar and syntax. The cultural-literary component continues to include a wider range of modern writers.

Prerequisites ITAL101 Italian N2 or equivalent

Teaching Organisation 5 hours of lecture and workshop sessions. In workshops students complete a range of language tasks. 1–2 hours a week are dedicated to the examination of literary texts and the film option.

 

Designed to improve and consolidate students’ functional usage and understanding of everyday Italian and to achieve a deeper insight into Italian lexico–grammar and syntax. The cultural-literary component focuses on the study of contemporary and nineteenth century Italian culture, society and literature, and includes a film option.

ITAL206 Italian N4                                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL205 Italian N3.

Teaching Organisation 5 hours of lecture and workshop sessions. In workshops students complete a range of language tasks. 1–2 hours a week are dedicated to the examination of literary texts and current affairs in Italy.

 

Designed to further improve and consolidate students’ functional usage and understanding of everyday Italian and to achieve a deeper insight into Italian lexico–grammar and syntax, particularly in writing tasks. The cultural-literary component focuses on the study of Nineteenth Century Italy as well as some contemporary authors.

ITAL207 Italian V5 (Cultural Studies)                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL102, ITAL103, ITAL203, ITAL204 (Italian V1-V4)

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed to further develop students’ communicative usage and understanding of current Italian with continuing focus on listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension and reading aloud, and writing. The focus of the unit is on some important social, political and cultural aspects of the history of Italy (the Etruscans, the Renaissance), as well as on the literary production of some 19th and 20th century authors (Verga, Leopardi).

ITAL208 Italian V6 (Cultural Studies)                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL102, ITAL103, ITAL203, ITAL204 (Italian V1-V4)

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed to continue introducing students to more lexico–grammar and to syntactic aspects of standard Italian, for further improvement of both communicative and linguistic competence. The focus of the unit is on two crucial periods of Italian history (Unification and Fascism), and on other important writers and poets (Carducci, Pascoli, Vittorini).

ITAL209 Italian V7 (Cultural Studies)                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL102, ITAL103, ITAL203, ITAL204 (Italian V1-V4)

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed to further enhance students’ communicative competence in Italian through the study of syntax, lexico–grammar and elements of discourse. The cultural/literary component includes Italian Neorealist cinema, the role of organised crime in the socio–political fibre of modern Italy, and the study of some prominent 20th century authors (D’Annunzio, Saba, Montale).

Prerequisites ITAL102, ITAL103, ITAL203, ITAL204 (Italian V1-V4)

Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures and workshops. In workshops students complete a range of language activities.

 

Designed to complete the study of the lexico–grammar and syntactic structures. The cultural-literary focus is on contemporary Italian cinema, the phenomenon of immigration, and the formation of neologisms; and the 20th century authors studied are Pirandello, Ungaretti and Sciascia.

Prerequisites ITAL206 Italian N4

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lecture and workshop sessions. In workshops students complete a range of language tasks. 2 hours a week are dedicated to the research component of the unit.

 

Designed for students at an advanced level in Italian. The unit aims to further develop students’ functional usage and understanding of current Italian with a specific focus on speaking, reading, writing and comprehension. The focus of the unit is on the communicative approach and as far as practicable only Italian is spoken in class. In addition to the set text, students will be exposed to authentic, unedited newspaper and magazine articles, prose fictions, songs, TV programs, Italian films, and direct radio broadcasts.

ITAL305 Italian N6                                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL206 Italian N4

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent. 2 hours per week will be dedicated to individual research on issues of interest to students and that relate to Elio Vittorini’s work.

 

Emphasis will be placed on advanced written and oral expression and literary text analysis. Salient aspects of Italian literature from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century will be analysed in some detail. Research will centre on the work of Elio Vittorini.

ITAL306 Italian N7                                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL304 Italian N5 and ITAL305 Italian N6

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent. In workshop sessions students will complete a range of language tasks.

 

Designed to enhance students’ communicative competence in Italian. Emphasis will be placed on the study of syntax, lexico–grammar and elements of linguistics.

ITAL307 Italian N8                                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites ITAL304 Italian N5 and ITAL305 Italian N6.

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent. 1 hour per week will be dedicated to individual research on issues of interest to students that specifically relate to G.D’Annunzio’s work.

 

Designed for advanced students of Italian. Emphasis will be placed on advanced written and oral expression as well as literary text analysis. Salient aspects of Italian literature of the Renaissance and the Eighteenth Century will be analysed in depth. Research will centre on the work of G.D’Annunzio.
