HUMA307 The Nature and Management of Dementia                                                                          10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Lectures, discussion of topics in study guide through distance education mode.

Although only a small number of older persons experience dementia, the design of services and the training of staff to assist such persons is becoming more specialised in nursing homes and respite centres. It is essential for employees to understand the different conditions which result in dementia and the recommended ways of interacting with persons who have dementia. Dementia not only affects people and changes their lifestyle dramatically and tragically, but also has effects on the families and others who care about them. A person’s diminished capacity for making informed decisions has legal implications relating to consent and financial management.

Their care needs tend to increase due to an increase in health problems, possible reduction of mobility and decreased social networks. This unit will provide students with an understanding of the home-based support options, the potential for the development of more flexible services and the legislation in place to ensure quality service delivery to meet the ongoing changing needs of the older person, such older persons maintaining social networks and interests and to establish new ones.

HUMA313 Lifestyle Facilitation 3                                                                                                          10 cp

The main approach of lifestyle facilitation is an individual one: meeting needs on a one–to–one basis. On occasions, however, the individual’s needs may be met within a group setting. Workers employed to assist people with a disability may be responsible for the organising and functioning of the group process. Within the social context, lifetime friendships develop through interaction with others who have similar interests and similar life experiences. Acknowledging that it is best that people choose their own friends, people with a disability often choose as friends other people with a disability who have had similar life experiences. With inclusion in the community as a principle of practice, workers who assist people with a disability have a role to play in encouraging inclusion by the methods used to assist the organisation of group activities. The units Lifestyle Facilitation 1 and Lifestyle Facilitation 2 provided students with practical facilitation exercises on an individual basis. This unit focuses on the development of a groups program in accordance with the needs of the individuals. Program implementation and evaluation are also integral components of the development process.

The aim of human service workers is to facilitate lifestyles for those who have disabilities in which they have equality of opportunities and access to facilities and benefits of Australian society. The impact of the legal system regarding inclusion and equity includes such issues as advocacy and rights, Disability and Mental Health Acts, guardianship, and other legislation. Because some issues are dealt with differently in the Australian states, this unit also provides references for information access according to local situations.

This unit introduces residential supervisors to the legal issues concerned with care of residents in the residential education setting. Concepts and ramifications of the term “in loco parentis” are studied, as well as policy and practice concerned with standards of care, risk assessment and reporting. The development of best practice ensuring the highest quality of care, are of primary concern.
