HIST102 Australia to 1890                                                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week, usually two lectures and one tutorial.

This is a general survey of the history of Australia from the coming of the Aborigines and the Europeans, through to the 1880s. It includes study of prehistory, the penal system, pastoral expansion, race relations, the gold rushes, immigration, urbanisation, agricultural settlement, and the development of education, cultures, religion and identity.

HIST104 Indigenous Peoples in Settler Colonies                                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week of lecture/seminar sessions. Specific case studies will be focused on in weekly seminars.

 

This unit aims to establish a broad global and comparative framework for the study of the spread of settler societies and their interactions with indigenous peoples and cultures from ancient times to recent history. It seeks patterns of interaction and change particularly in Southern Africa, Oceania and the Americas, but with some reference to the Asian region. Case studies of Southern Africa, New Zealand and North America will be used for comparative understanding and argument. Issues of historical sources and ways of interpretation will be explored.

HIST105 Early Modern Europe                                                                                                             10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Two one-hour lectures per week and one one-hour tutorial per week. In addition there will be some videos scheduled outside normal teaching sessions which students may attend. (Videos which are directly relevant to a lecture topic may be scheduled for inclusion in a lecture or tutorial).

 

This unit covers major themes in European history from the Renaissance and Reformation (ca. 1500) through to the latter half of the Eighteenth Century (ca. 1789). Students will be introduced to major developments in Renaissance and Reformation Europe from the High Renaissance (1450-1500) and the age of the Reformation, Counter Reformation, religious wars the Thirty Years War, the Intellectual Revolution of the seventeenth century and Europe in the age of absolutism and the enlightenment.

HIST106 Australian Indigenous Peoples – Past and Present                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation A variety of techniques will be used, including:  guest lectures, lectures, tutorials, workshops, field trips, multi-media forms.

 

This unit is designed to offer students a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, history and contemporary issues. The unit will focus on the diversity of Indigenous Australia with particular emphasis on the cultures and history of the region in which it is being taught, through involvement of, and consultation with, Indigenous community members in planning and implementation. Major themes will include: Traditional Cultures and Histories; Contemporary Cultures and Issues and Contributions of Indigenous People in the Making of Australia.

HIST107 Modern Australia                                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Three hours per week, usually two lectures and one tutorial.

 

This is a general survey of Australian history from around the 1880s to the present. It includes study of the challenges of the 1890s, federation, White Australia and “the Australian Settlement”, the World Wars, depressions, political developments, social change and changing national identity, immigration and race issues, changes in international relations as well as cultural, religious and educational developments.
