FAML100 to GEOG305
FAML100 Philosophy of Residential Care 10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Lectures, discussion topics in study guide through distance education mode.
This unit introduces the student to the underlying philosophy of residential care for those children of school age who, of necessity, are required to live in a residential setting. The pivotal concern for the residential supervisor is to perform the role of substitute parent. An historical context of residential care in the educational setting is investigated. This unit looks at the aims, values and practices which foster optimal care and development of the residential students. The multifaceted role of the residential supervisor is also investigated.
FAML200 Health, Fitness and Nutrition 10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Lectures, discussion topics in study guide through distance education mode.
This unit provides opportunities for staff in residential institutions, who are responsible for health and optimal well–being of clients in their care, to understand the essential components of good health and to develop skills associated with maintaining healthy clients. This unit will relate to issues in childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age.
FAML201 Health and Community 10 cp
Prerequisites BIOL111 Human Systems
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and seminars.
Changing community practices: role of education and information dissemination in modifying unhealthy practices. Disease processes: how diseases are acquired, eg congenital, infectious, sexually transmitted. Human nutrition and the influence of diet and lifestyle on health. Physiological events affecting ageing: factors which affect the health of the elderly, eg exercise, diet, activity and disease. Current issues in health, eg occupational health and safety, STDs, AIDS, drug use and abuse, cancer, and mental health.
GEOG100 Foundations of Physical Geography 10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
Topics in this unit are: the factors (geologic and climatic) which give rise to the earth’s landforms; the complex interplay of factors which give rise to the earth’s natural environments; a consideration of human adaptation to a variety of natural environments; the ways in which humans have modified such environments and the reasons for doing so.
GEOG101 Economic and Social Dimensions of Geography 10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
Topics are: the theoretical and applied aspects of the spatial distribution of economic activities and the processes responsible for such distribution; national and international aspects of contemporary economic geography; contemporary issues and research related to social dimensions of human geography.
GEOG200 Asia–Pacific Region 10 cp
Prerequisites GEOG101 Economic and Social Dimensions of Geography
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
The general patterns of physical and human geography of the region; the interplay of factors which have resulted in the variety which exists in the geographical space of the region; the problems and prospects for development in the region. Students will gather information on a theme concerning one or more countries or make a study of a region and analyse it and present it.
GEOG201 Geographical Perspectives of
Prerequisites 1 Asian Studies unit at introductory (100) level
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
Builds on the basic socio–political knowledge built up in the introductory units and advances these within the discipline of geography.
GEOG202 Resource Management of Coastal Environments 10 cp
Prerequisites GEOG100 Foundations of Physical Geography
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
This unit is concerned with studying the geomorphic processes associated with coastal environments with a view to evaluation of management strategies and sustainability. Students gather primary data on a selected beach relating to wave and wind parameters, beach cross–sectional profiles and resident perceptions of storm surge. This information is analysed using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software and other techniques to evaluate management strategies. Students will need to pay a small fee towards transport for the field trip.
GEOG203 Ecological Perspectives of
Prerequisites 1 Asian Studies unit at introductory (100) level
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
This unit builds upon the introductory units following an interdisciplinary approach common to human ecology. Content includes: Asian philosophies of ecology; impact of population growth; making environmental policy in Asia; impact of food production; need for power supplies; forest management; impact of tourism; Western impact: war, trade, garbage dumping and social dumping.
GEOG300 Agricultural Geography 10 cp
Prerequisites GEOG101 Economic and Social Dimensions of Geography
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
Concerned with: the physical and economic forces and uncertainties influencing agricultural production; the influence of the objective and perceived environments which modify human responses and account for the distribution and diversity of agricultural activities; the problems and prospects of agricultural systems. It will also aim to develop skills in the identification, collection, collation and interpretation of data necessary to account for the human-land relationship.
GEOG301 Individual
Prerequisites GEOG200 Asia–Pacific Region, GEOG202 Resource Management of Coastal Environments
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
Students will study research methodology in geography. Spatial and textual data analysis and statistical techniques will be examined. Individual research studies are conducted, requiring students to undertake fieldwork in the gathering of primary and secondary data. This data is analysed, interpreted and a research report is produced.
GEOG302 Management of Land Resources 10 cp
Prerequisites GEOG100 Foundations of Physical Geography
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
Students will study the geomorphic processes associated with evolution of the landsurface, notably fluvial, hillslope and soil processes. They will: acquire knowledge and skills associated with the field techniques of measurement and mapping of land–based geomorphic phenomena; analyse the different methods of evaluating management options for a land resource base (CSIRO land systems, McHarg ecological approach, EIS); and evaluate case studies of human interaction with, and management of, the land resource base.
GEOG304 Principles and Applications of Land Evaluation 10 cp
Prerequisites GEOG100 Foundations of Physical Geography
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
Students will study the incidence, impact and social cost, associated with inappropriate use of land resources. They will develop skills associated with collection, interpretation, collation, mapping and classification of land resource data and will evaluate resource base capability and land use planning proposals for proposed urban subdivisions.
GEOG305 Urban Geography 10 cp
Prerequisites GEOG101 Economic and Social Dimensions of Geography
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.
