ENGL400 American Literature and the Quest for the Sacred                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Students will examine the ways in which American literature, from its earliest days, has embodied the quest for religious experience. The unit will deal with native American responses to religion, puritanism, transcendentalism, heroic individualism, and the sacred in modern American culture.

ENGL401 Literary and Spiritual Imagination in East and West                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This is a unit in comparative literature. Students will have the opportunity to investigate the literary and artistic expressions of an Eastern or Middle Eastern tradition and its influences upon Western writing and arts.

ENGL402 Literary Theory                                                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week of lectures and 2 hours per week of tutorials for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit provides a survey of literary theory from the classical era to the present day, with a closer examination of major areas of contemporary theory including reception theory, structuralism, deconstruction, and feminist approaches to literature.

ENGL403 Literature and Religion: The Australian Context                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

An examination of the colonial literary response to the unique religious potentialities offered by a continent alien to Europeans, and the later development of that response, including that of the Aboriginal inhabitants of Australia.

ENGL404 Literature Research Methods                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 1–hour seminar, for 2 semesters.

 

In the context of selected critical, theoretical and literary texts, students will examine: library research; bibliographical studies; materials assessment; information technology; thesis presentation.

ENGL405 Poetry and Mysticism                                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Students will investigate the nature of religious poetry and mystical writings from a variety of religious traditions. The critical differences and similarities in the language of mysticism and the language of poetry will be a key issue in the unit.

ENGL406 Reason and Romanticism                                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Students will examine the challenge offered by Romanticism to the rationalist and scientific mind–set of the preceding period, exploring the artistic and social revolutions taking place at the end of the eighteenth century, and the resurgence of interest in religious experience seen in the literature of Britain and Europe.

ENGL407 Special Author Study                                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Students will be given a broad introduction to the themes, methods, and contexts of the nominated author and will apply a range of critical methods to the author’s work, leading to individual research in selected areas of study.

ENGL408 Special Studies in Popular and Speculative Literature                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 2-hour seminar.

 

There will be an emphasis in this unit on increased sophistication of critical response to the theoretical models. Students will examine selected critical, theoretical and literary texts, to be determined by negotiation.

ENGL409 Special Studies in Renaissance Literature                                                                           10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 2-hour seminar.

 

There will be an emphasis in this unit on increased sophistication of critical response to the theoretical models. Students will examine selected critical, theoretical and literary texts, to be determined by negotiation.

ENGL410 Special Studies in Romantic and Victorian Literature                                                          10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 2- hour seminar.

 

There will be an emphasis in this unit on increased sophistication of critical response to the theoretical models. Students will examine selected critical, theoretical and literary texts, to be determined by negotiation.
