ENGL200 19th Century Literature                                                                                                         10 cp

Prerequisites 1 Literature unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials and screenings will be used.

 

This unit examines a range of literary ideas and forms from the Romantic and Victorian periods of English literature. It examines the ideas of Romanticism and their roots in revolutionary politics and ideas, and the growth of a national literature at a time of rapid social and technological change.

ENGL201 17th and 18th Century Literature                                                                                           10 cp

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials and screenings will be used.

 

This unit offers a study of major works in the historical, political and social contexts of this formative period in English literature. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of major literary forms of the period. The unit will consider the move from Jacobean to Restoration drama, developments in lyric, satirical, and epic poetry, and the rise of the novel. Texts will be examined and discussed in the light of a range of contemporary theoretical positions.

This unit offers a study of major works in the historical, political and social contexts of the twentieth century. Emphasis will be on the study of both traditional and experimental forms, including the major developments of modernism and post–modernism. Texts will be examined and discussed in the light of appropriate twentieth century theoretical writings.

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures, including lectures, tutorials, and screenings will be used.

 

This unit provides an opportunity for an advanced study of significant works of Australian literature selected from all the major genres in their historical and cultural contexts. The unit may focus on a group of texts from a particular era, genre or type, allowing the intensive study of key works and their relationship to wider literary and cultural movements.

ENGL204 American Literature                                                                                                              10 cp

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures will be employed, including lectures, tutorials and screenings.

 

This course introduces students to a broad range of American literature. It presents students with some of the enduring preoccupations of American writing, which it situates in a historical and cultural context.

ENGL205 Australian Children’s Literature                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites 1 Literature unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures will be employed, including lectures, tutorials and screenings.

 

This unit introduces students to a range of Australian literature written for children and young adults. Texts discussed will include picture books, including those for older readers. Children’s Book Awards, often used as a marker for good books, will be critically examined.

This unit explores the relation between literature and gender discourse in a historial and cultural context. It typically focuses on the representation of women in literature, and/or the production of literary texts by women writers.

ENGL208 Creative Writing                                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites One Literature Unit at introductory level

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures, including lectures, tutorials, and screenings will be used.

 

This is a practical course primarily designed to foster students’creative writing. It may include an analytical component that will support students’ critical skills. It focuses on two genres: poetry and prose fiction.

ENGL209 Medieval English Literature                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites 1 Literature unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures, including lectures, and tutorials will be used.

 

This course will explore, compare, and contrast representative medieval English texts from Beowulf to the works of Geoffrey Chaucer and his contemporaries. Texts from the Anglo-Saxon era will be studied in modern English translations. Middle English texts in dialects other than Chaucer's will be studied in modernized editions, but the course will also include a brief introduction to the language of Chaucer and will present a selection of his texts in their original form. A selection of shorter Middle English lyrics will also be studied in heavily glossed original texts or bilingual presentations.

ENGL210 Shakespeare and the Renaissance                                                                                       10 cp

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials and screenings will be used.

 

This unit introduces students to some of the literature, art and thought of Renaissance England, and provides opportunity for close interpretative reading of dramatic and poetic texts, and for consideration of production and performance of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. The main focus of the unit is the work of William Shakespeare, from his poetry and early plays to the plays of his maturity, with reference also to other dramatists and to poetry and prose of Elizabethan and Jacobean England.

ENGL211 Speculative Literature                                                                                                          10 cp

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials and screenings will be used.

 

This unit examines the nature and development of speculative fiction in its various cultural contexts. It explores areas such as fantasy, romance, horror, and science fiction in literature and other media.

ENGL212 Historical Aspects of Children’s Literature                                                                            10 cp

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures, including lectures, tutorials, and screenings will be used.

 

This unit will focus on a historical survey of the development of children’s literature in England, Australia and the United States, from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Students will be introduced to the literature dealing with the history of childhood. The unit will link the changing constructions of childhood to developments in children’s literature and will develop students’ skills in interdisciplinary enquiry.

This unit explores the relationship between literature, the arts and religion (defined in its broadest sense as the quest for the sacred). The unit takes as its focus literature and the arts in Australia and begins with an overview of key symbols that have attracted the Australian religious imagination: Landscape, Exploration, Suburbia, and the Aboriginal Presence. These symbols are interrogated with the question: Can literature and art provide a source of spiritual renewal?

This unit allows students to explore the dynamic interplay between literature, art and religious ideas through focusing on the work of one author/artist and his contemporary legacy.

ENGL215 Literature for Young Adults                                                                                                   10 cp

This unit introduces students to a range of literature written for young adults, including verse novels, dystopian fiction and fantasy. Its primary focus is on recent YA literature and the reception such books receive both from their intended audience and from a more general audience. It also explores the historical development of writing for young adults as an independent field.

ENGL216 Myth, Epic and Romance                                                                                                      10 cp

This unit will first examine exemplary passages from a number of different mythologies, exploring the roles played by myth in the self-awareness, anxieties and aspirations of different cultures and their participants and the different truth-values that can be recognised in mythic narratives. It will go on to investigate the transition from early religio-mythic complexes to the more self-consciously literary constructs of epic and romance, with special emphasis on their use of mythological motifs, on the increasingly problematised relationship between the individual and the demands of his/her social milieu, and on the growing awareness in western literature of historicity as a profoundly complex and vexed issue in mythical constructs. The unit will maintain a general emphasis on the relevance of all these issues to the practice of literature in western cultures.

Most of the voluntary reading done by students during their undergraduate years and after will be ‘popular literature’. This course will examine the genres of popular literature and how they express the societal problems/issues of the day.

This unit examines the rapidly developing field of cultural studies and its relationship to theories of communication. Investigating the ways in which sign systems work in society, the unit applies semiotic theories to show how visual and textual signs reflect and constitute our culture and our selves.

This unit compares written forms of communication with visual forms of communication including film and television. The main focus will be on investigating how these media function within our culture.

ENGL223 Colonial and Post–Colonial Literature                                                                                  10 cp

This unit offers students the opportunity to study and compare selections from a range of “new” literatures in English drawn from former British colonies against the background of literature written before they gained their independence. Students will examine ways in which theoretical notions of colonialism and post-colonialism apply to selected texts.

ENGL224 Gothic and Romantic Literature                                                                                            10 cp

This unit will introduce students to gothic and romantic texts, in prose and verse, by English and American authors from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. It will consider issues concerning the audience, language, and literary imagination of either genre, as well as investigating in detail the relationship between gothic and romantic sensibilities and texts.

ENGL225 Aspects of Literary Theory                                                                                                    10 cp

This unit is designed to introduce students to some of the major concepts of literary theory of the twentieth century. It will examine the work of some of the key figures and schools of thought, demonstrating how these ideas relate to literary texts.

ENGL226 The Book of Books: the Bible and Its Uses in Western Literature                                         10 cp

Prerequisites One Literature unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials and screenings will be used.

 

The unit will first examine the formation and reception of the bible in Jewish and Christian tradition, with special emphasis on the relationship between Jewish and Christian scriptures, canon formation, translation, and the issues of interpretation and authority that have conditioned reading practices from antiquity to the present. The rest of the course will involve the reading and discussion of poetic and dramatic texts that respond to the biblical tradition from the middle ages to the late eighteenth century. It will investigate how these texts engage with scripture in different ways: retelling, imitating, echoing, and subverting.

ENGL227 American poetry: Seers and Doubters                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites One Literature unit at introductory (100) level

This unit explores a selection of visionary poems from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Is themes might include: nineteenth- and twentieth-century ideas about revelation, the nature of the visionary and the language used to depict it, the relation of the divine and the human, and the aftermath of revelation.

ENGL228 Special Author, Period or Theme Study                                                                               10 cp

Teaching Organisation Tutorials and individual research.

 

Students who are majoring in Literature may wish to study the work of a particular author or expressions of a particular theme in greater depth than is possible in survey courses. This unit offers students the opportunity to pursue their interest under the guidance of a supervisor and to synthesise the skills developed throughout their studies.
