ECUM500 Ecumenical and Interfaith Dialogue                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 2 contact hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

The unit explores church teaching – with a particular focus on the teaching of the Catholic Church – on the Christian call to dialogue in ecumenical and interfaith situations. Theological issues, such as the role of Jesus Christ in salvation and the church's mission of proclamation and dialogue, are examined in historical and contemporary contexts. Specific dialogues are considered with the view to developing a practical theology of ecumenical and interfaith relations.

ECUM501 Judaism and Islam                                                                                                               10 cp

Teaching Organisation 2 contact hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

The unit aims, firstly, to provide students with a basic introduction both to Judaism and Islam, their origins and forms, their beliefs and practices, and their legal codes and social life. In the second part of the unit students will explore, as a practical exercise in interfaith relations, a particular question in either one or other of the two religions (e.g., theological aspects of the Shoah, or Islam and socio-political life), or a particular aspect of dialogue between Christians and the other two Abrahamic religions (e.g., in cooperating to alleviate human misery). The methodological emphasis in this unit is on Jewish and Muslim self-understanding and on authentication from within each religion of the variety of traditions that are found there.

ECUM502 Socio-Cultural Analysis and Leadership in Interfaith Relations                                            10 cp

Teaching Organisation 2 contact hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and workshops.

 

This unit focuses on social and cultural analysis and on engagement as a critical and practical approach to leadership in the context of interfaith relations and dialogue between religious traditions. It introduces students to the field of social and cultural analysis providing methodologies for relating theology, and the study of religious faith traditions, to the social sciences. The emphasis throughout is on the need for adequate social and cultural analysis to underpin interfaith dialogue and serve as the foundation for authentic leadership in and between religious faiths. The unit helps students develop skills in engagement and dialogue as key features of leadership in the field of interfaith relations.

ENGL102 Australian Literature: An Introduction                                                                                   10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials and screenings will be used.

 

This unit is an examination of Australia’s national literature in its historical and cultural context. It provides a broad coverage of Australian literature from the early 19th Century to the present, examining poetry, prose, and plays by Australians and about Australia. The unit focuses on issues such as landscape, Aboriginality, mateship, the position of women, and multiculturalism.

 

ENGL104 Introduction to Literature                                                                                                      10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures, including lectures, tutorials, and screenings will be used.

 

This unit introduces students to examples of the main genres of literature, using a range of critical approaches. It aims to develop and broaden students’ understanding of ways of analysing and describing literary texts and their cultural contexts.

ENGL105 English Language Communication Skills                                                                             10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of seminars, discussions and workshops.

 

This unit is designed to extend the English language skills of students who have English as a second language. The unit covers the advanced communication skills and learning strategies required to study in the Australian context and in specialty areas such as Information Systems, Business, or the Humanities.

ENGL106 Business Communication Skills                                                                                            10 cp

Prerequisites EDAB100 Tertiary Communication Skills

Teaching Organisation: External mode with compulsory Residentials held throughout the year.

 

This unit will develop students’ abilities in communication both as a foundation for their formal studies and for effective transition to, or use within, the workplace. Included in the content will be the importance of effective communication, report writing, and formal presentation styles. Effective communication skills for interpersonal and collaborative contexts in the workplace will also be developed.

ENGL107 Written Communication                                                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials, writing workshops, on-line tasks.

 

This unit seeks to develop student’s writing and reading skills in a range of discourses relevant to their wider studies. Students will examine the practice of writing, from sentence level to whole documents, and the practice of reading for understanding in an academic context. They will also study practical written language skills. Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of the skills acquired.
