BUSO301 Asia–Pacific Business                                                                                                           10 cp

Prerequisites MGMT101 Fundamentals of Management

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit introduces students to management systems in China, Japan and Southeast Asia and, in particular, issues encountered by corporations having operations in different Asian countries. Other issues include a comparison of corporate practices of Asian, American, Australian and European multinational firms; current problems faced by executives managing in the context of today’s fast-changing Asian environment; and ethical dilemmas facing executives operating in the Asia-Pacific.

Prerequisites MGMT101 Fundamentals of Management

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

The nature of ethics in management; moral standards as applied to ethical issues in business; identification of current and future ethical issues; the effect of technology and technological change; the environment and environmental controls; unemployment and equal employment opportunity, on management and employees; managerial ethics and microeconomic theory; managerial ethics and the rule of law, normative philosophy, individual decisions, organisational design.

BUSO304 Small and Medium Enterprise Management                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites MGMT101 Fundamentals of Management, MKTG100 Principles of Marketing, ACCT100 Principles of Accounting

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit gives students an exposure to and an appreciation of the processes of new enterprise formation and management. Traditional and non-traditional business environments are discussed in examining the nature of entrepreneurship, enterprise formation including planning, finance, legal, people, location and marketing issues.

BUSO401 Research Methods                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week of lectures and discussion workshops.

 

This unit will review and study the range of concepts and techniques associated with qualitative research and basic quantitative methods used in the constituent discipline areas of Business and in Information Systems. Workshop activities and projects will be used to help students to develop their research methods skills. . It is intended that upon successful completion of this unit, students will have a comprehensive understanding of how to conduct a research project in their respective fields in Business or Information Systems.

BUSO402 Advanced Coursework Unit                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the Honours course

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of seminars, discussions and workshops.

 

This unit builds on a student’s knowledge in the relevant discipline area. Students undertake advanced coursework in a unit which is closely related to their intended area of research. With the prior approval of the appropriate Coordinator this unit may be undertaken at another institution.

BUSO403 Research Analysis                                                                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 35 hours or equivalent of lectures, workshops, discussions and library use.

 

Students will be given experience in analysing research literature in their chosen domain. Students will familiarise themselves with how research methods are used in different types of research in their own discipline by reviewing the relevant literature. This will enable students to understand the research process and be able to evaluate methodologies, compare research and report on research.

BUSO405 Honours Proposal (Full–time)                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Entry into the BBus (Honours) course

Teaching Organisation The proposal will be prepared under the guidance of a supervisor appointed by the School Committee on the recommendation of the Head of School. Normally the supervisor will be the same person appointed to supervise the thesis with the student.

 

This unit will introduce students to the construction of a valid research proposal, which addresses an identified problem.   Students will be gain experience in the preparation of research proposals through writing and presenting their Honours research proposal in their chosen domain.

This unit introduces students to independent research and thesis writing. Students will havedirect experience in the research process from the formulation of appropriate research questions, research design, data collection, analysis and detailed reporting of research findings in order to prepare and publish a thesis based on original research.

BUSO600 Ethical Leadership                                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Ethical leadership is very important for the health and well-being of not only those involved in an organisation, but also for the organisation itself. This unit reflects on the nature of ethical leadership and what this means for the management processes and work practices of institutions. Consideration will be given to the qualities, moral character and personal values which an ethical leader should have and how these foster cooperation, trust and loyalty within an organisation. The role of leadership and its responsibilities in the creation of an ethical corporate culture will be explored. Different ethical perspectives guiding ethical decision-making in the face of the ethical dilemmas and conflicts facing leaders will also be examined.

Prerequisites Completion of 40 credit points including MKTG600 Marketing Management

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit gives students an exposure to and an appreciation of the processes of entrepreneurship, new enterprise formation and management in a global environment. Traditional and non-traditional business environments are discussed in examining the nature of entrepreneurship, enterprise formation including planning, finance, legal and regulatory, human resources, location, logistics and marketing issues.

BUSO602 Comparative Business Cultures                                                                                            10 cp

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

International business operates across a wide range of business cultures, parliamentary systems, regulatory frameworks and financial systems. This unit is designed to introduce students to the implications of undertaking business transactions, partnerships and investments in a number of key business centres: USA, Australia, China, Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan. Particular emphasis will be placed on identified precursors to successful business ventures, interfirm and intrafirm relationships, employee relations and human resource management, dispute resolution procedures and the roles that different governments play in commercial affairs.

BUSO603 Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility                                                                10 cp

Prerequisites MGMT641 Organisational Dynamics and Change Management or MGMT602 Organisational Behaviour

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Issues of governance and ethical dealings by organisational management are seen by those who interact with them as being of critical importance to their ongoing relationship with an organisation. This unit provides an introduction to the theoretical, conceptual and ethical issues which impinge on the way in which corporate directors and managers work, solve problems and interact with their employees, shareholders, clients, government and statutory agencies, and the community at large. The nature of governance will be examined against a background of ethical theory and how ethical perspectives influence decision-making will be discussed. The point of profit and the relationship of corporations to the wider community, particularly in the global context, will be critically examined, as well as the question of the responsibilities corporations and their executives have to their stakeholders. Consideration will be given to the way in which corporate governance can foster the growth of ethical organisations.

BUSO604 Special Study (International Business)                                                                                 10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Seminars and face-to-face sessions will be for a minimum of three sessions.

 

This unit provides an opportunity to explore a particular area of "International Business" which, whilst fully corresponding to the aims of the MBA course, falls outside the specific prescriptions of any of the other designated units. As such, students are expected to undertake enquiry into a specific issue or concept within the field of international business and then to demonstrate enquiry skills by writing a paper related to the findings and summations.

BUSO605 Research Project                                                                                                                  30 cp

Prerequisites MGMT617 Research Methods

Teaching Organisation Each student is under the supervision of a member of the University staff, who will guide him or her in the research and writing up of the research project.

 

The Research Project involves independent study under supervision. The Research Project is expected to be a substantial piece of research in which a student must demonstrate an ability to conduct an independent research study, making appropriate theoretical connections, and adding to an existing body of knowledge. Each candidate is under the supervision of a member of University staff.
