Teaching Organisation 20 days (equivalent to 140 hours) to be organised by students during either Semester 1 or 2.

 

Traditionally the focus of the Catholic educational tradition is the development of individuals who are able to exercise moral and professional autonomy in a pluralistic society. As the first of a series of professional development units, this unit enables students to engage in the social and ethical dimensions of the community. Students will therefore complete a period of personal service in a non-profit organisation, which will enable them to serve the common good and develop a concern for social justice and the dignity of all human beings.

Teaching Organisation 20 days (equivalent to 140 hours) to be organised by students during either Semester 1 or 2.

 

This unit facilitates students’ moves into the area of the chosen major and provides them with the opportunity to develop an industry perspective of their chosen field by focusing upon aspects of the major: Human Resources, International Business, Accounting, Finance, Information Systems or Marketing. The placement gives students opportunities to apply some of the theory from their degree, either directly or by observation of management within the placement industry. Students are able to analyse and compare theory and practice. Experience in the field will enable the development of students’ critical thinking skills. Through the subsequent report students have an opportunity for critical evaluation of theory and practice.

Teaching Organisation 20 days (equivalent to 140 hours) to be organised by students during either Semester 1 or 2.

 

This unit provides students with the opportunity to further build on their prior professional experience in their chosen field or industry, complementary to their chosen major: Human Resource Management, International Business, Information Systems, Accounting, Finance, or Marketing. The placement is designed to enable students to specialise and gain further insight into an identified future career area(s) honing their skills and opportunities with a view to eventual post-University full-time employment.

Teaching Organisation This unit is taught in the Distance Education mode and is presented in two parts. Part one consists of 12 topics presented over 12 weeks. There will be a new module (topic) every week. Each module consists of required reading, outcomes, key terms, summary or required reading and an assessment item. Part two consists of residential school sessions.

 

This unit aims to provide students with an understanding of the procedures and systems that exist in a modern office. This includes the administrative procedures relating to the flow and control of documents and the importance of referencing all material. The proper application of technology and its limitations will also be examined.

BUSO106 Personal Values and the Market                                                                                          10 cp

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit allows students to investigate the basis of their values and beliefs. It aims to stimulate exploration and reflection on the relationship between personal values and the marketplace; the role of interpersonal communication of values; living as a person and making a living; professional responsibility; and social concern. The unit will encourage students to explore the relationship between cultural values, personal virtues and business practices and the opportunities and challenges of living a life of integrity.

This unit will develop students' abilities in communication both as a foundation for their formal studies and for effective transition to the workplace. Included in the content will be the importance of effective communication, report writing, formal presentation styles. Effective communication skills for interpersonal and collaborative contexts in the workplace will also be developed.

BUSO203 Business Ethics                                                                                                                     10 cp

Prerequisites MGMT101 Fundamentals of Management

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

The discipline of ethics can be described as a systematic reflection on the morality of human judgement, character and action. Its inclusion in the Bachelor of Business course as a separate unit emphasises the importance of a considered ethical view of professional business practice and of its social impact. This unit serves as an ethical foundation in which to frame study of the various business disciplines. It encompasses a general introduction to ethics and considers important implications of ethical principles for the modern world of global capitalism. Within this framework, it addresses some of the more specific issues usually considered under the heading of “business ethics” such as whistle-blowing, dirty hands, equal opportunity, advertising and global and environmental issues.

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit presents students with general theories and concepts of international relations. It aims to acquaint them with important critical perspectives; introduce them to major historical and contemporary issues in international relations; and to augment their theoretical and diagnostic capacities. The major schools of thought to be examined include Realism, Liberalism and Globalism, with particular emphasis given to topics such as war and peace, human rights and the global economy.

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

This unit will focus on the importance of effective communication within the work environment; description of business communication activities; issues in corporate communication that require analysis; design of messages and response to feedback; oral communication (including presentations), non–verbal communication, communication technology, and communication models; skills in listening, writing, reading, assertiveness and empathy; intercultural aspects of communication.

BUSO206 International Trade and Export Procedures                                                                         10 cp

Prerequisites ECON104 Business Economics, MKTG100 Principles of Marketing

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

The purpose of this unit is to build an understanding of Australia's position in the International Trade system and the importance of International Trade for the Australian economy. The students will be introduced to a number of concepts, models and business practice patterns essential in managing international operations, developing new export markets and export promotion programs, managing financing, banking and logistics of international trade operations. The regulatory environment of international business will be studied along with the latest developments in major trade blocks.

Business students will face situations in their future careers that have an ethical component or dimension. Problems requiring difficult decisions confront every business person from time to time. In some types of situations, one person will be the primary decision maker, or have the most significant voice. In other types of situations, such as organisational decisions, many different managers may become involved. This subject will prepare students with a sound foundation which will help them to face ethical dilemmas in the business environment.

This unit presents students with general theories and concepts of international business and trade, and familiarises them with the basic terminology, key concepts and issues unique to the subject. It will provide students an opportunity to gain a global perspective on management and organisational behaviour by studying international trade, investments, and the business environments.
