ARTS104 Introduction to Two–Dimensional/Three-Dimensional Design                                              10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent, with the periods divided appropriately between lectures, discussion, seminars, tutorials, independent research, on-site investigations, museums and other institutions.

 

This unit is an introduction to design genres connecting the various specialisations of art, communication, technologies, philosophies and contexts within the contemporary and historical environment. Surveys of the theories, ideas and social contexts of the major art, craft and design movements of the 20th century are examined in relation to the development of conceptual frameworks for studio design projects.

ARTS105 Introduction to the Visual Arts                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent, including art museum visits. Compact mode, Summer or Winter School 12 hours per week for 3 weeks.

 

This unit is an introduction to key aspects of the artworld ranging from Art History and Art Criticism to Aesthetics and Artwriting. The introductory nature of the unit necessarily limits the depth of coverage but prepares the student for more intensive investigations later.

Teaching Organisation Lectures, seminars, workshops, screening, visits.

 

The arts have traditionally been studied in isolation, with emphasis on the particular qualities of each and without reference to the similarities existing between the various art forms. This unit introduces students to the formal study of aesthetics in the context of a number of art forms with an emphasis on Music, Drama, and Visual Arts. This unit adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Arts. It examines the ways in which the arts use codes and symbolic structures as a means of communication and involves students in exercises in reading and using these codes. This unit also establishes a platform for considering topical and significant arts issues in contemporary Australian society.

ARTS108 Introduction to Drawing                                                                                                        10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Normally a 3-hour workshop, including lectures, seminars, and visits to museums/galleries.

 

This unit is designed to introduce students to drawing as an expressive form, through the exploration of a wide range of media, processes and subject matter. The immediacy of the process of drawing and the graphic quality of marks on a two dimensional surface will be the focus of the unit.

ARTS109 2D Studies 1                                                                                                                          10 cp

Teaching Organisation Lectures, tutorials, studio workshops, gallery visits.

 

This unit will introduce students to the fundamental relationships that exist between media areas such as drawing, print-media, painting, and photography. Emphasis will be on the development of a critical awareness of practice in these forms through the exploration of the content and the context of contemporary art. The acquisition of essential skills, knowledge and values pertaining to two dimensional studies will be enhanced by studies in art and design history and theory, undertaken concurrently with this unit.

ARTS110/234 3D/4D Object Design 1                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Lectures, tutorials, studio workshops, gallery visits.

 

This unit is designed to introduce students to a diverse range of approaches to 3D and 4D forms and object design, through the completion of a number of project-based exercises that will lay the foundation for further studies in these areas. Questions of intention and the conceptual framework in which works are conceived and produced will be addressed.

ARTS111 Graphic Design 1                                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Computer Laboratory classes, lectures, tutorials and small-group practice.

 

This unit introduces students to computers, including hardware, software and design applications as they are used in the graphics and media industry. The range of software programs applied to project-based exercises will include image manipulation, typography, photographic enhancement and desktop publishing applications. An understanding of the content and context of contemporary graphic design practice will be examined in relation to the exercises completed by the student, and will be enhanced by concurrent studies in art and design history and theory.

ARTS112/235 Art and Design History and Theory 1                                                                              10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Lectures, tutorials and gallery visits and/or flexible delivery.

 

This unit examines art and design history and theory, commencing with the nineteenth century and concluding with World War II. It examines the production of art and design and theories and meanings within the context of society, politics, culture and religion.

It looks at a variety of modes of visual representation ranging from Realism, Symbolism and Expressionism to early twentieth century avant-gardes such as Futurism, Dada and Surrealism. These will be examined within the context of industrialisation, technological transformations, colonisation and international conflicts.

This unit is designed to extend the development of concepts, processes and techniques as they relate to projects in two dimensional media areas such as drawing, painting, photography and print-media. It continues the focus of study upon production methods but with increased attention to the conceptual possibilities offered by these activities.

ARTS114/236 3D/4D Object Design 2                                                                                                    10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Lectures, tutorials, studio workshops, gallery visits.

 

Students will further develop their knowledge of the processes and skills relevant to the production of selected 3D and 4D forms and object design. They will extend their experience and knowledge of research methods appropriate to the visual arts and will move towards individual concept formation. An understanding of contemporary practice, nationally and globally, will be a focus of the unit.

ARTS115 Graphic Design 2                                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Computer laboratory classes, lectures, tutorials and small-group practice.

 

This unit extends the basic skills and understandings developed as a result of studies undertaken in Graphic Design 1. An investigation of graphic design practice, requiring students to extend their use of software applications and their technical skills into contextualised issues in graphics and media design will be a focus of the content of the unit.

ARTS116/237 Art and Design History and Theory 2                                                                              10 cp

Prerequisites Nil

Teaching Organisation Lectures, tutorials, museum and gallery visits and/or flexible delivery.

 

This unit examines the major forms of cultural production in art and design in relation to changing social, political, and economic contexts from the 1940’s to the present. Issues relating to Formalism, Pop, image and text, feminist theories, post-colonial culture, the “de-materialisation” of art and design, new technologies and performance are addressed. The unit is designed to provide students with an insight into the pre-texts of contemporary practice and a body of knowledge on which to base more detailed inquiries into the field.

ARTS200 Two–Dimensional Studies 1                                                                                                  10c p

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation Lectures, demonstrations, critiques, studio workshops, gallery visits and library research.

 

Continues the study of drawing and introduces students to the study of photography, painting and printmaking and any other 2D art forms, using a wide variety of media at both theoretical and practical levels in order to enhance aesthetic and production skills. Students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas, skills and techniques.

Teaching Organisation Lectures, tutorials, excursions, critiques, and studio investigations.

 

This unit is designed to extend the development of concepts, processes and techniques as they relate to projects in photography, drawing, painting and printmaking in a wide variety of media. This unit continues the focus of study upon production methods but with an increased attention to the conceptual possibilities offered by these activities.

ARTS203 Art History: Antiquity to the Renaissance                                                                              10 cp

Designed to introduce students to certain key developments in the History of Art and selected aspects of a wider cultural context from Prehistory to the Renaissance.

ARTS204 Art History: Renaissance to the 20th Century                                                                        10 cp

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Designed to introduce students to certain key developments in the History of Art and selected aspects of a wider cultural context from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

ARTS205 Australian Art History: Colonial Art to Nationalism                                                                10 cp

Visual Arts major / minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level.

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

The history of Australian art is designed to introduce students to certain key developments and selected aspects of a wider cultural context from pre–colonial to about 1900.

ARTS206 Australian Art History: Nationalism to Contemporary Art                                                      10 cp

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

The history of Australian art is designed to introduce students to certain key developments and selected aspects of a wider cultural context from about the 1890s to contemporary times.

ARTS210 Design Studies 1                                                                                                                   10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent, with the periods divided appropriately between lectures, discussions both individual and group, demonstrations, seminars, tutorials, on site investigations, designers, design outlets, museums and galleries.

 

An introduction to key developments and principles within Graphics Media, including Advertising: concepts, promotions and packaging; Illustration: print and publishing production; Photomedia: photography production, audio-visual presentation and video. Research and graphic exploration of the major theoretical and historical trends augment knowledge and practice within the context of the mass communications industry, of cameras, film, print, and the critical analysis of image outcomes. Studio practice encourages experimentation in the application of a wide range of production techniques applied to the design process.

ARTS211 Design Studies 2                                                                                                                   10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent, with the periods divided appropriately between lectures, discussions both individual and group, on-site investigations, designers, design outlets, museums and galleries.

 

This unit extends students’ project work with an emphasis on Object design, both applied and decorative. Major theoretical and historical perspectives within various schools such as Art Nouveau and the Bauhaus are investigated. This unit includes the application of extensive research into the implications of photographic, video, filmic practices and computer graphics, form part of the design process.

ARTS215 Three–Dimensional Studies 1                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major / minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Students will study 3–D form, exploring approaches of three–dimensional fabrication and design. Consideration will be given to the context of media, technique, concept formation, historical references and current developments, trends and applications.

ARTS216 Three–Dimensional Studies 2                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level.

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Students will continue to observe and develop processes and methods relevant to the production of 3–D forms. This unit will provide an extension of research methodologies and individual concept formation. An understanding of current trends, nationally and internationally.

ARTS217 Art Theory: Aesthetics                                                                                                           10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

In the framework outlined for this unit, aesthetics forms a theoretical/philosophical basis, or a set of concepts, for the understanding of art. These concepts are an open–ended group, subject to revisions, and address many aspects of art.

ARTS218 Art Theory: Artwriting                                                                                                           10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

Focuses on the literature of art to expand and consolidate the participants’ views on various genres of art historical and critical writing while offering practical application and exemplification of Aesthetics and philosophies of art.

ARTS219 Two–Dimensional Studies 3                                                                                                  10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation 3-hour workshops with occasional visits to galleries.

 

This unit is designed to extend the advanced development of concepts, processes and techniques as they relate to projects in advanced 2D media. This unit continues the focus of study upon personal production methods but with an increased attention to the conceptual and expressive possibilities offered by these activities.

ARTS220 Three–Dimensional Studies 3                                                                                               10 cp

Prerequisites Visual Arts major/minor: 1 Visual Arts unit at introductory (100) level

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent.

 

A study of contemporary issues and trends in 3–dimensional art works from a selection including ceramic ware both functional and sculptural; works of metal, plastic, and plaster; natural media; found and ready made forms. Advanced methods of casting, throwing, shaping, and forming. Individual research approaches including reading, writing, drawing towards original individual concepts.
