AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Australian Catholic University offers courses leading to awards at both undergraduate and postgraduate level at the University’s six campuses, and in Hong Kong, within the specialisations of the liberal and creative arts, the social sciences, the natural sciences, informatics and business.

The Faculty incorporates three institutes and ten schools. The national Institute of Business and Informatics comprises three schools located in Brisbane, North Sydney and Melbourne. The Institute of Legal Studies is a national unit with a focus on postgraduate courses and continuing legal education. The national Institute of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Education is a cross-Faculty unit that includes three schools, two of which - the national School of Theology and the national School of Philosophy - are part of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In addition there are three Schools of Arts and Sciences located in Brisbane, Strathfield and Melbourne/Ballarat and the national Schools of Psychology and Social Work.

Within the Faculty, discipline areas include Australian studies, Asian studies, behavioural science, biblical studies, business, church history and patristics, design and technology, drama, economics, environmental science, ethics, geography, history, information technology, legal studies, literature, mathematics, media, music, philosophy, psychology, social science, social work, theology, and visual arts.

The Faculty accepts the intrinsic worth of liberal studies to the individual and to society at large and seeks to offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are both challenging academically and responsive to society’s rapidly changing demands. Through its courses it seeks to prepare its students to think critically, informed by their studies and by the goals set out in the Mission Statement of the University. Its aim is to be a community characterised by free inquiry and academic integrity. Our graduates are employed in management and administration, in advertising, the arts, public relations, business and commerce, social work, the church, private enterprise, journalism, teaching and community services.

The Faculty is a community of scholars committed to the goals of expanding human knowledge and deepening human understanding. To these ends, it actively encourages and supports the production of scholarly research and creative works by its staff and students. Faculty staff supervise students enrolled in research degrees of MPhil and PhD and in professional doctorates. We invite those who are already graduates to consider such possibilities at this University.

If you are about to undertake tertiary studies for the first time, and are reading this guide as an aid in selecting a field of tertiary study, you are about to embark on a great intellectual adventure. Whatever you choose to do, I wish you well and I assure you of a warm welcome from the staff and students of the Faculty.
