1. Admission Requirements
An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.
To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed:
- (a) the following prerequisites at year 12 level or equivalent:
Australian Capital Territory
- Major in English (T), minimum B grade; and Major in Mathematics (T), minimum C grade.
- Recommended Studies: Science (T)
New South Wales
- a minimum of three Band 5 HSC results, including one in English; or
- HSC results and successfully completed bridging units benchmarked to HSC Band 5 results; or
- have completed a BOSTES approved alternative entry pathway: or
- achieved the published entry rank and subsequently pass a full year of academic studies in the subjects in which the applicant intends to teach.
Queensland
- At least Sound Achievement in the current QCAA Authority Subject of Senior English; and
- At least Sound Achievement in Mathematics (QCAA Mathematics A and/or B and/or C or equivalent subject from another jurisdiction).
Victoria
- Minimum of Units 1 and 2 – two units (any study combination) of general mathematics or mathematical methods (either) or Units 3 and 4 mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English. Students wishing to undertake mathematics as a major/minor require Units 3 and 4 – mathematical methods. Students wishing to study Music must have AMEB Grade VI or Year 12 Practical Music.
OR
(b) Alternative pathways approved via national ITE accreditation processes and/or via the relevant jurisdictional teacher regulatory authorities.
2. Additional Approvals
All students enrolled must have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are: Blue Card (Qld), Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) or Working with Children Check (NSW and Vic). International students must bring police check documentation from their own countries. All students who have lived in another country for 12 months or more must provide a police check from that country for that period.
3. Definitions
"Major": 80 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at introductory level, at least 40 cp at 200 level and at least 20 cp from 300 level.
"Minor": 40 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 20 cp at advanced level.
4. Requirements for Completion of the Degree
To qualify for the degree, a student must complete 320 cp consisting of:
- 160 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:
- 40 cp from Education Studies;
- 40 cp from Curriculum Studies;
- 30 cp from Core Curriculum Program Units;
- 10 cp from Education Electives;
- 30 cp from Professional Experience Unit; and
- 10 cp from University Core Curriculum Units
- 160 cp in accordance with the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree, consisting of2:
- 10 cp from Core Arts Unit;
- 80 cp from 1 Arts Major;
- 40 cp from 1 Arts Minor;
- 20 cp from other units in the Bachelor of Arts degree which may be:
- 20 cp from advanced level units in the same discipline as the Major or Minor; or
- 20 cp from Arts Electives; and
- 10 cp from University Core Curriculum Unit.
Students must pass all professional experience components, including professional experience embedded within units.
5. Admission Requirements for the Honours Degree
To be eligible for admission to the Honours degree a student must have
- completed 160 credit points from all units in Years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts; and
- maintained a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 6.0 across all units in Years 1 and 2 of the course.
6. Requirements for Completion of the Honours Degree
To qualify for the degree with Honours, a student must
- Qualify for admission to the Honours Degree
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 6.0 for the duration of the course
- Complete 350 cp consisting of:
- 190 cp from the Bachelor of Teaching Schedule of Unit offerings requirements of the degree
- 50 cp from Education Studies
- 40 cp from Curriculum Studies
- 30 cp from three Core Curriculum Program Units
- 30 cp from Professional Experience Units
- 40 cp from Honours Units
- 160 cp in accordance with the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree as stipulated above.
- 190 cp from the Bachelor of Teaching Schedule of Unit offerings requirements of the degree
Students must pass all professional experience components, including professional experience embedded within units.
