Teaching Organisation A variety of teaching and learning strategies such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and self-directed packages may be utilised to introduce and explore the writing of an honours proposal.
This unit will provide honours students with the opportunity to explore the process of developing a proposal for their honours thesis. The content of the unit will include advanced research methods, ethical considerations in research, developing a research question, the supervisor-student relationship, time management and thesis writing.

SWTP411 Social Work Practice with Individuals and Groups 2

This unit will build on Social Work Practice with Individuals and Groups 1 by extending the student’s ability to conduct assessments and develop appropriate and empowering interventions with people who have diverse needs with particular attention given to vulnerable groups. A range of social work interventions will be explored. Emphasis will be given to group work with students developing knowledge about group work theory and skills in designing and running groups. The unit will continue to focus on the ethical principles underpinning social work practice and students will examine a range of ethical issues that regularly confront practitioners. The experiential component will provide practice in interpersonal communication skills and knowledge of reflective practice through small group activities and individual tasks.
SWTP412 Individual and Community Risk and Resilience

The unit will provide students with an understanding of individual, family and environmental factors which impact on psychosocial risk (vulnerability) and resilience for individuals, families and communities. The unit takes an ecological perspective and a ‘wellness’ philosophy in exploring the implications of risk and resilience for practice. Knowledge and skills for working from a ‘wellness’-based or resilience-based approach with individuals and communities are explored, noting the influence of individual characteristics (eg age, gender, race, religious commitment and ethnicity), community characteristics (eg community assets) along with specific influences on wellness and on coping with life’s challenges (eg illness, disease, disability, substance misuse, loss and change, trauma and natural disaster). Programs and interventions developed as part of presenting this paradigm shift are critically analysed as are the concepts of prevention, early intervention and the promotion of wellness.
SWTP600 Advanced Social Work Theory and Practice

Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
This unit will examine the debates surrounding the status of theory in social work. Theory has been problematic in social work and the controversy that is generated by the ‘theory-practice’ dilemma, provides a beginning point for this unit. Questions of what is theory and what is practice are embedded in this debate. The history of ideas in social work will be a focus for explicating the theory-practice problematic. Critical and postmodern perspectives have changed the contemporary debate. The issues facing practitioners are how theories ‘guide’ practice, how theories are constructed and how theories are ‘used’ in practice. This unit will explore the possibilities of practitioner-generated theories.

Teaching Organisation The thesis will be prepared under the guidance of a supervisor appointed by the School Committee.
An introduction to independent research and writing, involving the preparation of a project based on original research. The project can be undertaken either in one semester or in a year.

Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
This unit will examine issues related to leadership in human service organisations particularly from a social justice perspective. It explores the nature and role of leadership in the changing context of human service delivery. This provides the context for considering the following issues: leadership styles and role; gender and leadership; management and leadership; leadership and change.
SWTP603 Professional Supervision and Consultation in the Human Services

Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
This unit will explore the practice of professional supervision in the Human Services. The applicability of current models of supervision in different areas of Human Services management and practice will be critically examined. These include the traditional one-to-one model, peer supervision, consultation, mentoring, group supervision, self-supervision, peer supervision, distance supervision and external supervision. The issue of ethics in supervision will be considered with particular emphasis on issues of boundaries, confidentiality and the use of self in practice. An important aspect of the course is the development of the skills of supervision, including the development of supervision contracts, the skills of giving constructive feedback, the development of reflective practice and conflict resolution.
SWTP604 Special Studies in the Human Services

Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
The purpose of the unit is to allow students to explore a particular area of the human services specific to their postgraduate specialisation. The unit is to allow students to deepen their understanding of a topic specific to their workplace and will provide them with the opportunity to develop their knowledge of issues around one of four major areas of study: leadership, youth work, mental health or child protection. The unit may also be offered in the event of a visiting academic whose expertise is relevant to the goals of the postgraduate program in the human services.

The aim of this unit is to provide students with a critical examination of child welfare policies and institutions. It will give students a critical context for understanding the development of child welfare policies in Australia and internationally and the politics surrounding the issues. Students are expected to have a thorough understanding of the policies and issues in child welfare.

This unit will examine the debates surrounding the status of community practice in Australian social policy and human service practice. It will consider the history and development of community practice in Australia. Reflecting on the concept of community and the multiple constructions of community development provides a beginning point for this unit. Community consultation versus community participation will be examined in detail. The unit will consider social entrepreneurship, social capital and community capacity building and will draw on international frameworks around community practice.

The aim of this unit is to engage students in a critical examination of mental health policies and institutions. It will give students the essential context for understanding the development of mental health policies in Australia and internationally. Students will become familiar with the issues surrounding mental health and illness from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
SWTP610 Mental Health Assessment and Diagnosis

Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
The aim of this unit is to provide students with skills in assessment and diagnosis enabling them to practice as highly competent practitioners in mental health contexts. On completion of this unit students should have the skills and knowledge to effectively conduct mental health and suicide risk assessments with individuals, families and groups who are experiencing severe mental health problems.

Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.
This unit will focus on working with people with mental health disorders. It aims to develop student’s knowledge of the various models of case management and interventions for clinical practice. Students will also become familiar with a range of individual and family therapies. On completion of the unit students will have developed knowledge and skills in these therapies.
