The biological concepts of information and heredity (genes, genetic code, changing the code, inherited traits) are to be examined. The physical science concepts that are to be concentrated on in this unit include force, energy, electricity, mass / weight, density and pressure, work and power, solutions, reactions, change of states of matter. The concepts are to be taught in context of everyday situations. There is no one topic or situation that will cover all the aspects of science included in the unit. Relevant topics include water, milk, fabrics, communication and packaging.

This unit introduces the student to the foundation knowledge required for the study of technology. Problem solving and practical work develop the understanding of the concepts involved. Relevant mathematical and experimental skills and issues relating to technological applications and their safety, occupational health and environmental implications are integrated into each topic.

The following areas will be explored: molecular and cellular genetics (for example, RNA and protein synthesis, cell division); microbiology (culturing, infection control, immunisation); history of biotechnology, uses of biotechnology (fermentation technology, genetic engineering, mutagens in the environment); a comparison of ‘natural’ and ‘human’ evolution, biotechnological techniques and procedures; risks and uncertainties (toxicology and quarantine testing procedures); bioethics.

The separate development and independence of Science and Technology until recent times, and the vast changes that occurred within society when these two disciplines did collaborate, are examined.

Teaching Organisation Lectures, seminars, tutorials and field excursions.
Examination of philosophical differences between scientific methodologies and the humanities. Analysis of the interrelationship between science and society of a selected scientific development, such as Darwin’s theory or Computers; effect of political and economic decisions upon scientific developments; examination of the use of technology in society, for example, medicine, leisure industry; current issues in science, for example, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, drugs in sport; future possibilities and projections, for example, environmental science, movement studies; evaluating information reported as ‘science’ in the popular media; critical evaluation of the effect of technology on performance.

Teaching Organisation Lectures, practical sessions and tutorials.
Appropriate technologies for consideration might include: laser applications; ultrasound (medical and industrial applications); fibre optics in communications and medicine; the production of nuclear energy and applications of radiation in medicine and industry; the evolution of certain technologies such as the automobile, the bicycle and the steam engine; the development of timing devices and their impact on navigation; optical instrumentation including developments in microscopy; the effect of technology on society and of society on technology.

Prerequisites Entry into the BEnvSc (Honours) course
Teaching Organisation 4 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of tutorial discussions, computer laboratory and library classes and field work.
This unit enables honours students to discuss the development of the scientific method in an historical context and to explore aspects of ethics and philosophy relating to science. There is a focus on gaining essential knowledge and skills in research design, methodologies, and analysis. Communication skills needed for the presentation of scientific submissions, reports, and manuscripts are developed during the unit.
SDAB105 Indigenous Lifestyles Past and Present

The aim of this unit is to explore the main elements of Indigenous cultures past and present. The main emphasis will be on cultural diversity and dynamic cultural change. In linking the past to the present, aspects of traditional culture expressed in modern cultural forms will be examined. Areas to be explored include kinship systems and social structures, traditional roles of men, women and children, religion and spirituality, the dreaming and the law, relationship with the sea and land, caring for the environment, economic life, and the inter-relation of the arts in everyday life.
SDAB106 Post-Contact Indigenous History

This unit explores changes in Indigenous societies from 1788 to the 1960s. The impact of European contact and colonisation will be focused upon utilising both written and oral sources. The effects of invasion, dispossession and government policies on the lives of Indigenous people during this period will be examined. This unit also concentrates on the study of Indigenous family history, the history of local resistance, the rise of Indigenous community organisations and political activism.
SDAB107 Contemporary Issues in Indigenous History

The aim of this unit is to research a broad range of Indigenous contemporary issues relating to the political, social and legal aspects of Indigenous communities. Included will be land rights, Mabo, native title, Wik and reconciliation. There will be a focus also upon health, housing, education, deaths in custody and government structures which affect Indigenous people.

The purpose of this unit is to assist students in their transition to tertiary study. As part of tertiary studies students are required to learn different ways of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The move from primary to secondary school, and then to the work force or tertiary study, involves developing new language skills. This unit will give students an opportunity to identify and practise language skills appropriate for tertiary study.
SDAB300 Australian History in an Indigenous Context

This unit will provide a wider historical context for some of the other indigenous studies units by dealing with important trends in Australian history since 1788. It will focus on the impact of these trends on Indigenous communities and the contribution Indigenous people have made to Australian society and culture. The periods studied will encompass the land wars, Federation, the pastoral industry, the two World Wars, the White Australia Policy and the development of policies of cultural diversity.

The unit will build upon the two unit Aboriginal Studies Syllabus and the preliminary and HSC support documents in assisting students to develop a broad range of strategies utilising a variety of resources. Specific emphasis will be on critically examining new syllabus documents at the HSC level.
