This unit examines the nature of drama from the basic elements of dramatic form - ritual, improvisation and role play - to the elements of theatre production and performance. Of special significance is the exploration of drama as a means of constructing social and cultural identity in specific cultures and ages.

This unit introduces students to significant dramatic forms and performance styles. It examines performance in its historical context and in the way the performance space, the actor, and the play have changed to create particular styles and genres.

This unit looks at the development of Theatre for Children within the English-speaking world, with particular emphasis on the experience in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. The unit considers the theoretical bases of the Educational Drama movement and examines its influence on the nature of Children’s Theatre today.

This unit extends students' appreciation of the variety of non–textual dramatic forms that have emerged during the twentieth century and their links to earlier theatrical practice. Special attention is paid to the social, scientific, and political developments that have accompanied the emergence of various forms and the appeal of mixed media presentations.

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, seminars, workshops, screenings and visits will be used.
This unit examines a number of dramatic texts from classical Greece to the present day in the context of the theatres and performance conditions of the period in which they were written. Although some attention will be given to other traditions, the emphasis will be on the emergence of the playhouse in Europe and the social and technological implications of its development on writers.

This unit introduces students to the disciplines of playwriting. This includes the structures, styles and scripting conventions of particular dramatic genres. Theatre forms and theatre writers will be examined by students modelling, adapting and creating scripts for practical application.

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, seminars, workshops, screenings, visits and performance will be used.
This unit offers an examination of Australian culture through the work of selected Australian playwrights. Texts will be selected to illustrate particular preoccupations and a variety of dramatic styles. Students will have the opportunity to explore both literary and performance aspects of the set plays.

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials, workshops, screenings and performance will be used.
This unit studies the development and function of comedy in Western theatre, from its origins in Greek drama to the present day. It will explore comedy in various performance manifestations such as stand up, film, video, television, and theatre performance. The role of comedy in constructing a social discourse will be examined through a detailed study of such genres as satire and vaudeville, and through the comedy performer.

This unit examines the development of modern drama from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It does this by examining the three dominant drama styles of naturalism and realism, expressionism and epic; and symbolism and the absurd.

This unit allows for a specific exploration of plays and theatrical expressions from the late-nineteenth century. It may focus on the role of modern playwrights, directors and theatre companies and their contribution to the prevailing images, philosophical differences, and concerns of their society.
PERF214 Shakespeare’s Theatre

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, workshops, screenings and performance will be used.
This unit examines the theatre of Shakespeare in its historical and contemporary performance contexts. Through a detailed study of plays by Shakespeare and some of his contemporaries students will become aware of the theatrical constraints and conventions of the period. Practical workshops will complement textual study.

Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials, screenings and practical workshops will be used.
This unit will introduce students to film techniques, film history and the ways in which cinema has been discussed from its inception until now. The unit will involve the full screening of several movies and the partial screening of selections from other films. Students will be involved in detailed discussions about the legacies of film and TV. Recent multimedia innovations will also be mentioned.

In this unit students will explore the grammar of theatre performance and the practice of staging, including stage configuration, design, costume, lighting, make-up and sound. It will involve practical involvement in performance for an audience.

This unit explores the development of Indigenous performance styles in Australia. It will focus on the political and cultural issues that the texts raise as well as the performance conventions that are embraced or challenged. The primary focus for the unit will be Aboriginal Drama although indigenous performance from other parts of the world will also be discussed.

Teaching Organisation Seminars, workshops, individual tutorials.
Students who are majoring in Drama may wish to study the work of a particular playwright, the plays associated with a particular period or movement in drama, or some aspect of the practice of theatre making in greater depth than is possible in survey courses. This unit offers such experienced students the opportunity to pursue their interest under the guidance of a supervisor. For students wishing to undertake further study in Drama at Honours level, this unit is highly recommended.

This unit provides an overview of the human resource function in modern organisations. This unit covers a range of HR issues, perspectives, theory, research and best practice. HRM is examined from a strategic perspective, placing emphasis upon creating a fit between HRM policy and practice and organisational strategy, culture and business environments. The unit addresses core functions of HRM and also the needs and expectations of the multiple internal and external stakeholders in organisations. Ethics in HRM is also a key consideration in this unit. This unit is the foundation unit for the Human Resource Management major.

This unit is designed to prepare the student for both the management and delivery of human resource development programs in organisations. The course builds students’ understanding of the role of human resource development within work organisations, the learning process, and the issues and dilemmas involved in implementing training and development. These issues are explored through an examination of the practical steps of training and development: needs identification, the design, delivery and evaluation of training, and other key areas of human resource development (including employee orientation, career planning, and management development).
PERS202 Performance Management

The content of this unit is designed to build students’ understanding in the design, formulation and implementation of the various systems of performance management, the dysfunctions of appraisal systems, theory and practice of appraisal interviewing and employee counselling, and the implementation of employee assistance programs. The discipline process is also examined, especially in relation to potential conflict with performance management systems.

Students will be introduced to the information technology that supports the human resource management function in organisations. Emphasis will be placed on the methodology that ensures the sound acquisition of application software as well as the functionality of HRIS software. Relationships between information needs of line and specialist management and the means of supplying that information will be examined. Some exposure to various commercial software applications and linkages to other software systems of core business will be covered also.

Teaching Organisation This unit is taught in the distance education mode and is presented in two parts. Part one consists of 12 topics presented over 12 weeks. There will be a new module (topic) every week. Each module consists of required reading, outcomes, key terms, summary or required reading and an assessment item. Part two consists of residential school sessions.
This unit aims to provide students with an understanding of the principles and interrelationships of human resource management and workplace relations. It will consider theories, issues and influences in human resource management(HRM) and the role of workplace relations in Australia and organisational management. It will examine the importance of the strategic role of HRM in contemporary business, the practical functions of HRM and the knowledge and skills required of HRM practitioners. The unit will focus on the impact of HRM strategy and processes in organisational planning and management by considering contemporary HRM issues in Australia.
