This unit provides the opportunity for students to explore the philosophical and theoretical foundations of contemporary midwifery practice. A with woman approach where pregnancy, birth and parenting are considered a normal experience and practice is based on a wellness and social model of health, underpins this unit. National and global context of women’s health and childbearing will be considered.

This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore the professional relationships within the maternity and neonatal environments. Unexpected events requiring obstetric and neonatal interventions will be examined. The impact of such events upon women, babies and families will be viewed in the context of midwifery practice.

This unit provides the opportunity for students to develop knowledge and attitudes in the provision of woman-centred midwifery care across the childbearing period. The unit focuses on the expected alterations and adaptations and their impact on the woman, baby and family: forming a clinical basis for midwifery care.

This unit provides the opportunity for students to integrate theoretical concepts in relation to the care of well women and babies. Emphasis is placed on health assessment, monitoring and care across the childbearing continuum.

This unit provides students with opportunities to explore the history and culture of midwifery. This unit examines the context of midwifery practice in Australia and internationally, in a range of settings, including the role and functions of the midwife and the issues surrounding midwifery services. Students will also be offered opportunities to increase their knowledge and understanding of the various models of health care and the implications of these models on midwifery practice. ethico-legal issues will be evaluated in relation to childbirth and midwifery practice. The professional obligations of the midwife will be explored and debated.

This unit provides the opportunity for students to integrate knowledge and understanding from theoretical and clinical units to provide care for the woman and her family across the continuum of the maternity experience. This unit enables students to further consolidate theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise, through undertaking a clinical learning contract as a means to address identified learning needs and interests.

This unit provides opportunity for the student to critically evaluate and reflect upon contemporary midwifery practice and related evidence. This unit also provides the opportunity to advance their midwifery knowledge, skills and attitudes and to work with women in keeping birth normal.

This unit provides the foundation of scientific knowledge that underpins selected areas of specialty practice. Specific knowledge in the areas of bioscience, pharmacology and lifespan development, relevant to the student’s selected specialty area, will be identified and explored in relation to its application to clinical practice and in the context of typical clinical scenarios.

This unit integrates with the unit Foundations of Specialty Practice, as students develop and apply knowledge and skills for safe patient/client-centred care relevant to their area of specialty practice. Clinical experience is an integral aspect of student learning as theory and practice are integrated and assessed in relation to clinical competencies. The unit focuses on enabling students to perform a comprehensive health assessment and prioritise and implement appropriate nursing care.

This unit builds on and extends the knowledge and understanding acquired in Foundations of Specialty Practice and Nursing Practice 1. The aim is to prepare students to provide holistic care at the beginning level of specialty practice. The focus of the unit is on developing a collaborative team approach with increasingly complex therapeutics. The students’ ability to articulate the bases of their clinical decision-making will be facilitated.
NRSG600 Foundations in Clinical Education

Teaching Organisation Equivalent of 12 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials per semester.
This unit will provide the student with an overview of clinical educational models, concepts, theory and knowledge presented within a clinically contextualised (nursing) framework. The theoretical basis for adult learning and the process of learning will also be explored. Teaching, learning, delivery models and trends in higher education will be analysed and assessed for their applicability to clinical learning contexts. This unit will also define and debate competency-based and inquiry-based education. The theories and philosophies within Foundations in Clinical Education will form the underpinning framework for the other units in the Master of Nursing (Clinical Education).

This unit will provide the student with a range of group facilitation models and microskills, which are appropriate for collaborative adult learning and teaching in clinical contexts. The unit provides the student with a further repertoire of group dynamic theories, models, philosophies and principles, which can be applied to teaching and learning in small and large groups. The unit also explores the necessary strategies for the implementation of the ANCI National Competency Standards, as well as including a practice component that the student is required to negotiate with the University and their clinical facility.

This unit will provide the students with the knowledge and skills to develop and implement innovative, valid, reliable, practical and efficient assessment procedures that are appropriate to a wide variety of clinical situations. Students will explore the role of assessment and evaluation in the curricula of clinical teaching and learning, as well as examining the underpinning theories and philosophies that underpin these assessment procedures. Various innovative forms of assessment and learning outcomes will focus on adopting a deeper approach to learning, such as peer review, self-assessment and ANCI competency assessment. In addition, the unit includes an opportunity for the students to explore in detail issues in relation to evaluation of clinical teaching programs. Issues of judgement of others and innovation in developing accurate assessment of practical ability will be critically examined.
NRSG603 Curriculum Design and Development

This unit develops the skills required to design, manage and evaluate teaching programs, continuing education programs, clinical workshops and in-service education programs. Students will establish a familiarity with the components and processes of designing materials and instruction that is learner-centred, using an Inquiry-based approach, which involves a higher level of learning, autonomy and participation. Students will examine current curriculum models, and explore the theoretical and philosophical perspectives that underpin the design, management and evaluation of curriculum. The unit will also highlight issues and strategies, which are relevant to curriculum development, in particular, meta-learning, self-directed lifelong learning, developing generic transferable skills and developing deep approaches to learning.

This unit seeks to promote the role of the nurse as an educator and promoter of health, in clinical teaching and other health care settings. In addition, this unit will explore ethical issues associated with this nursing role. The unit seeks to promote a wellness model of health care, over the current illness model. In particular the unit seeks to critically examine historical and contemporary approaches to health promotion and health education. To focus this critical lens, notions of ethics, social justice, equity and community participation in health promotion and health education are emphasised.
NRSG605 Global Contexts of Midwifery

This unit provides opportunity for the student to critically appraise the international environment of midwifery politics and midwifery practice. The context of international midwifery in the developed and developing world will be explored. Women’s reproductive health and reproductive rights and their relationship to midwifery will be critically examined.

This unit critically examines the emergence of quality management and the philosophy of quality improvement as a factor in contemporary society. Philosophical, historical, social, economic and cultural issues that underpin quality management systems will be examined. Factors such as globalisation, and the consumer movement, which has led to new paradigm approaches to the structuring of organisations and leadership, will also be examined. A particular focus of the unit will be the development of quality management processes in health care.

The thesis will normally be up to a maximum of 50,000 words in length.
