Teaching Organisation Individual tuition by an approved teacher, for 60 minutes per week over one semester (or equivalent), including studio instruction and supervision in the context of choral rehearsals (as detailed below) and worship services (either live or videotaped).
The student is required to rehearse an approved church choir of at least 12 singers, singing in at least 3 vocal parts for at least 1.5 hours per week over the semester, or equivalent. The details of the proposed choir must be submitted for approval no later than one week before the commencement of the semester, together with proposed rehearsal times and repertoire.
A study of the art and techniques of choral rehearsal and direction appropriate to the practice of music in worship, including the direction of an approved choir throughout the semester. The repertoire may be chosen to reflect the student’s own denominational tradition.

A study of up to two selected topics chosen from the following discipline areas in historical and systematic musicology: aesthetics of music, music criticism and music analysis. Topics to be investigated will be negotiated according to staff availability and student demand, and will be chosen from the following broad areas: (i) a study of selected writings of the philosophy of music from antiquity to the present day, (ii) a study of selected theoretical and historical writings on music criticism and critical writings on music, including journalistic criticism, (iii) a study of selected approaches to analysis applied to a variety of musical styles, using analytical techniques such as structural, functional, formal, thematic, stylistic, semiotic, paradigmatic approaches, and set theory.

A study of the history, sources, notation, and forms of Western Plainchant, as a theoretical background for an informed method of chant performance. A critical approach to chant editions will be developed by examining the restoration of chant since the late nineteenth century, the various schools of performance, and the controversies surrounding these.

A study of the aesthetics of music with particular reference to the realm of the sacred. Students will examine the ways in which music can communicate meaning, either alone, or in association with other forms of art. An advanced study of compositional technique allowing candidates an opportunity to develop compositions of significant length, complexity and originality. The preparation and presentation of an original composition normally totalling 20-30 minutes. The composition should concentrate on a particular genre, style or theme. It may include contrasted sections or movements, but must display an overall cohesion. Compositions may be scored for solo or ensemble forces, and may include synthetically produced sound.
