EXSC120 Mechanical Bases of Exercise Science
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.
This unit provides an introduction to the mechanical principles that provide the starting point in the theories of biomechanics. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques will be addressed in a review of strategies for the analysis and description of human and projectile motion.
EXSC130 Foundations of Motor Development and Behaviour
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.
This unit will provide the foundation studies for the sequences and changes that occur in motor development during the lifespan from birth to old age. Contemporary theoretical approaches will be used to explain current applications, measurement, and best practice.
EXSC131 Coaching Principles
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.
Students will undertake studies based upon coaching science. There is an emphasis placed upon the basic principles of coaching sport as a science and developing philosophy that recognises a systematic and progressive introduction of the skills of coaching. Throughout the course the emphasis is developing a range of professional coaching skills, and the attainment of vocational qualifications pertinent to this area of study.
EXSC140 Physiological Bases of Exercise Science
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of laboratory per semester.
This unit provides an introduction to human physiological processes from an exercise science viewpoint. It forms the basis for further studies of physiological functioning throughout the lifespan and the interrelationships of systems in the context of exercise stress.
EXSC141 Training and Conditioning Principles
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.
This unit introduces the influence of exercise upon the quality of daily functioning involved as a human moves. The scientific principles of exercise during sport performance are applied and exercise as an agent for rehabilitation from injury is also investigated. In particular, strength and resistance training is applied from a lifespan perspective to example the concepts of exercise specificity, measurement of exercise quality, program planning and prescription to achieve specific goals. Students will be challenged to design a specific personal program based upon their current participation in exercise.
EXSC150 HPE 1 - Aquatics and Athletics
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 120 hours of focused learning consisting of lectures, workshops, activity experiences and school and community site visits.
This unit is designed to provide students with knowledge about aquatics and athletics activities and how they might be used to provide core learning experiences within a health and physical education curriculum. A developmental perspective is taken and reference is made to ways in which principles derived from current Exercise Science knowledge can be applied in order to evaluate the effectiveness of selected activities. These activities contribute both to the goals of educational programs and the achievement of physical education-related outcomes for a range of individual abilities and experience.
EXSC180 Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil

EXSC181 Health Promotion and the Prevention of Disease
10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials/practical per semester.
The focus of this unit is on the prevention of disease in 20th century Australian society, and the identification of strategies to optimise human well-being. The pathophysiology of common illnesses and disorder will be examined in the context of heredity, nutrition, and environment.
EXSC182 Promotion of Mental Health
